World Accordion Day Accordion Society of Australia (Victoria branch) Event

The Accordion Society of Australia held a special event to celebrate World Accordion Day (WAD) at Open Studio in Melbourne. All accordionists and enthusiasts are invited to come along and join in the celebrations. Anthony Schulz will entertain with his new Musette Quartet along with other accordionists who would like to play, all invited to attend.

Report

If audience attendance is a measure of success, then the ASA’s first World Accordion Day excelled. With over 70 in attendance, Melbourne’s iconic venue Open Studio was well and truly at capacity, filled with accordion enthusiasts, lovers and performers young and not so young.

The newly formed ASA Orchestra Victoria (ASAVO) as well as the Prahran Accordion Band, played alongside French Musette and Chanson ensemble Langue de Chat as well as accordion (and mixed instrument) duos and soloists. There were performances by students who are currently preparing to go to Sydney in July to compete in the Australian National Championships as well as some of Melbourne’s best known accordionists including Dave Evans and Sofia Chapman who dropped in to join the celebration.

The sense of warmth and collegiality throughout the afternoon was terrific and the event has further propelled the ASA into the limelight as the premier organisation promoting all things to with the accordion here in Australia.

Congratulations to all the wonderful players who joined us on World Accordion Day, 2023.

Anthony Schulz
ASA (Victoria) President

Vienna Accordion Club Favoriten (WAF), Celebrates 50th Anniversary with a World Accordion Day Concert - Austria

Information sent by Dr Herbert Scheibenreif. The Vienna Accordion Club Favoriten (WAF), conducted by Christian Höller, will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a concert on World Accordion Day (WAD).

The concert will take place at the Kulturgarage VHS in Vienna, Austria on May 6th and feature the performance of Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" arranged by Thomas Bauer.

The club was founded by Prof. Walter Maurer and May 6th was his birthday. He would have reached the age of 92 this year.

Harley Jones, CIA Public Relations anecdote: "Prof. Walter Maurer, was Secretary General of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) from 1975 to 2006. At a CIA Summer Congress, I had suggested having a World Accordion Day. The Congress liked the idea and then discussion took place about when? Prof. Walter quickly proposed 6th May, the date in 1829, that Cyrill Demian filed a patent in Vienna for the accordion. Congress approved. With a big smile, I note that Walter forgot to tell Congress that it was also his birthday!"

The Victoria Accordion Club Band presents this song with great appreciation for the musical legacy left by Gordon Lightfoot on his passing in May 2023.

The video is also created in memory of the incomparable Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, who you will know passed away in May 2023.

- Tanga Revenga composed by Antonio Spaccarotella (Italy) with Bay of Plenty Symphonia, Grayson Masefield soloist;

Information from the the Bay of Plenty Symphonia website:

Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s first concert programme of 2023 is something very different – an orchestral concert with a world-acclaimed accordion soloist. The mood is light and festive with lots of variety, including the world première of a specially commissioned work. The concert will be performed twice, in Rotorua on May 6 and in Tauranga on May 7.

Rossini’s sparkling overture The Italian Girl in Algiers opens the programme with a flourish, followed by the tranquillity of Honneger’s Summer Pastorale.

Our accordion soloist is central to the program. Aucklander Grayson Masefield is a triple world champion who regularly tours internationally to perform and adjudicate. He will perform three pieces with the orchestra – two in the exhilarating nuevo tango style, and a new work by leading Kiwi composer Ross Harris. Ross himself is an accordionist so expect something exciting for this instrument! Thanks to a generous bequest, BOP Symphonia has been able to specially commission his Introduction and Allegro, for Grayson to perform at this concert. Tauranga and Rotorua audiences will be the first in the world to hear it!

Contrasting works to be played by the orchestra include Fauré’s famous Pavane, and Kurt Weill’s Little Threepenny Music, which tells the story of Mack the Knife from his Threepenny Opera. Our conductor, Justus Rozemond, has specially arranged Weill’s music for orchestra.

Russia

Date: March 18th. The All-Russian Day of Bayan, Accordion and Harmonica is celebrated each year (on the third Saturday in March) at the Gnesins RAM Concert Hall in Moscow. The Department of Bayan and Accordion of the Gnesins RAM established the event with project manager being Friedrich Lips.

The All-Russian Day of Bayan, Accordion and Harmonica is also Russia's contribution to World Accordion Day (May 6th) because that date clashes with a Russian National Holiday, so for that reason, the All-Russian Day of Bayan, Accordion and Harmonica is held in March annually.

The Department of the Bayan and Accordion of the Gnesins RAM established the event with project manager, Friedrich Lips. The aim of the event is to become part of a national cultural project.

The initiative began in 2010 and demonstrated great enthusiasm in all regions of Russia, both from amateurs and professional musicians, and resulted in a truly national celebration.

It is worth noting that throughout the twentieth century these instruments were an integral part of the life of the peoples of Russia: Russians, Tatars, Bashkir, Ukrainians and many others and that the bayan, harmonica and accordion played an important role during the World War II of 1941-1945.

Now it's time again to invite you to an open house in our shop for the celebration of World Accordion Day! As usual, we have a couple of different artists performing during the day and it will be on 2 different occasions.

This year there will be a small "Accordionist of the Year theme" and we have the pleasure of presenting this year's artists: Håkan Andersson who performs together with guitarist Claes Ottelid and Beiron Hultman.

The store will be “open house” with different artists performing during the day: Håkan Andersson who performs together with guitarist Claes Ottelid and Beiron Hultman.

Beiron was voted by the members of SDR (Sveriges Dragspelares Riksförbund) as "Dragspelare of the Year" in Sweden 2022 and Håkan was voted 2023, so it is the last two who received this honorable title that we will experience on the same stage in Fjärås. We will present the artists in this event in a little more detail in the future

.

Of course, we offer coffee and cookies during the day and we will have some special offers. We open the store at 10, we start the event at 11 with coffee service and the various performances will be at 12 and 14:30.
Warmly welcome everyone!
