The Frankfurt Musikmesse 2017 is the world's largest music trade fair for musical instruments, sheet music, music production and marketing. - Wednesday 5th April to Saturday 8th April 2017, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Open daily for Trade and Private visitors - More than 30.000 instruments shown in seven exhibition halls - Many workshops, concerts, demonstrations and discussion events. Program Details: 2016KyivKravchuk.pdf The 2017 Kyiv International Bayan-Accordion Music Marathon takes place on the 1st and 2nd April 2017 from 12.00 to 21.00 hours. This Kyiv International Bayan-Accordion Music Marathon was held for the first time in April 2013, organized by the National Ukrainian Music Union and its Association of Accordionists. Artistic Director is well known Ukrainian composer and conductor Volodymyr Runchak (picture left). The aim for this event is to promote Ukrainian accordionists, accordion compositions and accordion concerts in general. |

Video: "Eight Sonnets About Love", soloist Friedrich Lips, world premiere. Upon initiative of the chair for bayan and accordion of the Gnessin Music Academy in Moscow, the annual All-Russian Day of the bayan, the accordion and the harmonica was started in 2010. For 2017, a concert was held in the concert hall of the Gnesin Music Academy, 18th March. A feature was Friedrich Lips performing a world premiere of the Michael Bronner composition "Eight Sonnets About Love" for bayan and chamber orchestra. Teija Niku new CD 'Memento', Helsinki – Finlandby Rob Howard |
Video: Making of Memento album by Teija Niku Accordionist Teija Niku, from Helsinki, Finland, has just released her second solo album 'Memento', which mixes elements from Scandinavian and Balkan folk music to jazzy and cinematic moods. The tracks include: Limp, Suvivirsi, Humma, Haven, Yksi ruusu, Talven tulo, Flypolska, Unen maa, Memento. Teija Niku is a professional folk musician with a master's degree from the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department. Teija plays both diatonic and chromatic accordion. She specializes in Nordic and Balkan folk music, but she also plays tango, French musette, accordion evergreens and composes her own music. The Motion Trio perform in concert on Saturday March 25th, 7pm, at the Bielskie Centrum Kultury, Bielsku-Bialej, Poland. The Motion Trio is an internationally renowned Polish accordion trio. Formed in 1996, the Motion Trio are Janusz Wojtarowicz, Pawel Baranek, and Marcin Galazyn. Using all the advantages of the accordion in their creations, the Motion Trio continually explore the new possibilities of this instrument, changing the way that it is perceived. Southern Cone Quintet Concert, London – UKby Rob Howard |
The Southern Cone Quintet concert on March 25th, 7.30pm, at St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, 78 Bishopsgate, London EC2N 4AG, offers ‘Impressions of music from Argentina, Chile & Uruguay’. Food and drink will be available for sale on the night. Southern Cone Quintet takes its name from the geographical area of the same name, embracing the countries of Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. The Southern Cone has a rich and diverse musical tradition, with genres including Tango, Cueca, and Candombe, as well as indigenous ethnic forms such as Mapuche music. It is from this rich earth that the Southern Cone Quintet draws its inspiration. The repertoire consists of re-arrangements of pieces from a wide variety of sources. From 20th Century composers like Astor Piazzolla and Violeta Parra, to traditional folk songs and ancient native chants. While the style resembles Nuevo Tango, it could also be described as “Nueva Cueca” or “Nuevo Candombe”. The SCQ performers are Lucia Veintimilla – violin, Claude Werner – clarinet/flute/arranger, James Kitchman – electric guitar, Iñigo Mikeleiz Berrade – accordion, and Louis Thomas – double bass. |
Franck Angelis Concert @ Novosibirsk – Russiaby Rob Howard |
On Saturday March 25th, 6.30pm, the leading French composer and accordionist Franck Angelis performs in concert in the Concert Hall Nsmsh, Novosibirsk, Russia, as the chief guest at the National Bayan Competition. Tickets cost 500/250 Rubles. Franck Angelis won the CMA Trophee Mondiale in 1981, and went on to establish himself as both a performer and most notably as a composer, with many compositions for cinema and the theatre to his credit. His works are frequently performed by leading international accordionists. He currently teaches at the l'Ecole Nationale de Musique de Gennevilliers in France. The festival runs from March 23rd to 26th, and closes with a free concert featuring the competition winners at 6.30pm on Sunday. |

Accordionist and organist Mariya Leminskaya performs music by Felix Mendelssohn, JS Bach, and Astor Piazzolla, in concert on Sunday March 26th, 5pm, at the Martinskirche, Meimsheim, Brackenheim, Baden-Wurttemberg, southern Germany. Entrance is free. Mariya Leminskaya, born in Kaliningrad, Russia, studied accordion and piano at the Hohner Conservatory in Trossingen, Germany. She now teaches both instruments, and also performs. |

Accordionist Zoltan Orosz performs in concert with Mihaly Borbely – clarinet/saxophone, Kornel Horvath - percussion, and Bela Lattmann – bass guitar, on Sunday March 26th, 7pm, at Peton Szinhaz, Veszprém, Hungary. Zoltan Orosz studied the accordion and the organ at the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest, and later at the Franz Liszt College, Budapest. On Thursday March 30th, 7pm, the Rizol Bayan Quartet performs Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ at the White Hall of the House of Scientists, National Philharmonic Hall, Kiev, Ukraine. The ‘Four Seasons’ (‘Le quattro stagioni’), by the Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), was published in 1725, and has been performed and recorded worldwide by many artists, ensembles and orchestras. The Rizol Bayan Quartet, one of Europe’s longest established accordion quartets, was formed in 1939. Its current members are Sergiy Grichenko, Oleg Shiyan, Igor Sayenko, and Roman Molochenko. He began performing when he was 6 years old, with his father, Al, in the family band, and he has appeared on more than 50 recordings, including the 1994 Grammy winning ‘Music and Friends’ by Walter Ostanek. Since 1995 he has led his own band. His main instruments are accordion and trumpet, although he can also play keyboards, bass, drums, and many different horns. ‘Polka Freak Out’, his 2007 release, was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. The latter is described on the CD cover as "A collection of songs mixing elements of polka styles from around the world ... on top of a Tex-Mex rhythm section and enveloped in a pop-rock aesthetic." His latest, ‘Three Ring Circus’, mirrors the variety in his live shows. His original songs are mixed in with polkas from many cultures. There is even an Irish dance rocker. ‘The Water Jug’ (‘La Giara’), a novel by Patricia Haddad King, will be presented on Friday March 31st, 8pm, at World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St, Philadelphia, with the new book release and signing. The evening includes a musical drama based on the book set in concert form and merges Italian folk music, jazz and opera, with a Brazilian Choro influence.
