2011 Milk and Honey Accordion Festival – Israelby Harley Jones |
Each year around the Feast of the Pentecost,(Shawuot in Hebrew) there is a large accordion-Festival called "Milk and Honey" This time it took place at the huge amphitheatre in the oldest agriculture settlement called Nahalal in the northern part of Israel which was was founded in 1921. The festival was held for the first time in 2004 and in 2008, the festival honored Yehuda Oppenheimer. In 2011, the "Father" of the accordion in Israel, Yehuda Oppenheimer welcomed the audience and the participants. The evening was divided into two parts. In the first part performed well known Israeli accordionists, who played with various ensembles, mostly Balkan music which is popular with the public. The second part started at about 11 pm when groups of accordionists gathered together to accompany the traditional Community Singing which lasted until the early hours of the morning! The organizers of the Festival were very pleased to see that the interest in the accordion is steady rising as evidenced by the thousands who attending this popular event.
