Harmonika Müller August Exhibition - Austriaby Christine Johnstone |
Harmonika Müller will hold an in-house exhibition in Bad St Leonhard, Carinthia, Austria from August 25th to 27th, 2023 from 9am to 5pm daily. The event will feature special offers as well as “an insight into the production of a Müller harmonica”. In 1976, the first handmade Styrian left the master workshop founded by Peter and Edith Müller. Since then, the company has grown to become today's largest harmonica manufacturer in Austria with over 45 employees, who now manufacture, test and assemble all components in in-house departments with years of experience but also using state-of-the-art technology. Romuald Lefebvre: Interview "Meet the Musician Behind the Sound" - Italyby Harley Jones |
"Meet the Musician Behind the Sound" is a new series of interviews with young and upcoming accordionists so you can get to know them better. The Collaborators conducting the interviews are Adele Pirozzolo and Andrea Di Giacomo. The Romuald Lefebvre interview is now published edited by Andrea Di Giacomo. Romuald Lefebvre performed with the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017. He is also teaching at the Conservatoire de Calais and Boulogne-Sur-Mer. Concerned with the development of the accordion, he was one of the founders of the l'Association des Professeurs de Haut de France. He recorded 2 solo albums, "Eclectique" in 2013 and "Toccata" in 2014. Accordionists Perform at Earagail Arts Festival - Irelandby Christine Johnstone |
The Earagail Arts Festival will be held in County Donegal, Ireland from July 8th to 23rd, 2023 and feature a variety of concerts, workshops, exhibitions and masterclasses. The Henry Girls (picture left) will celebrate 20 years of making music together as a band and the launch of their new album “A Time to Grow” with a concert on July 21st, 2023 at 8pm, at The Colgan Hall, Carndonagh as part of the festival. The trio will also give a Masterclass/workshop at the Malin Presbyterian Church in Malin, from July 17th to 21st, 2023, which will “explore the necessary tools and skills for inspiring and facilitating the craft of song writing, arranging and performing. The 29th Annual Catskills Irish Arts Week will be held in East Durham, New York, USA from July 16th to 22nd, 2023. The event features a “week-long celebration of Irish music, song, dance, culture, heritage and language”. Accordion workshops will be held by Patty Furlong, Diarmuid O Meachair, Danny O’Mahony, Loretta Egan Murphy and Billy McComiskey. Paul Chamberlain Performs at St Giles Cathedral - Scotlandby Christine Johnstone |
Video: Concert at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland Paul Chamberlain gave a solo recital in St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland on Sunday 11th June. This was his first solo concert since his heart transplant in 2022 so was an important milestone in his return to the stage. His program included works by Rameau, Khachaturian, Zolotariev, Piazzolla and Rossini, as well as one of his own compositions “Orcadian Sunrise” Paul Chamberlain has recently also performed a series of concerts with duo partner Michael Haywood. Their next concert will be held at St Laurence Church in Thirsk, Yorkshire, England on June 29th, followed by an appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on August 11th, 2023. |

The II Open All-Russian competition of performers on bayan, accordion and accordion "Russian Cup" was held online on June 20th 2023. 116 soloists, 9 ensembles and two orchestras took part in this competition. The geography of the competition was extensive as participants from various regions of Russia were represented, including Vologda, Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Tula, Irkutsk, Belgorod, Rostov, Saratov, Sverdlovsk, Tomsk, Astrakhan, Kirov, Pskov, Vladimir, Orenburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Tambov, Kostroma, Moscow , Leningrad, Lipetsk, Orel, Kaliningrad, Arkhangelsk, Yaroslavl regions, Primorsky, Trans-Baikal, Khabarovsk, Perm, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk Territories, Khanty-Mansiysk and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs, Karelia, Bashkortostan, Komi, Tatarstan, as well as the Republic of Belarus. Competition organisers thank all the participants and their teachers, as well as the respected jury represented by Chairman Viatcheslav Semionov, Maria Vlasova, Evgeny Derbenko and Sergey Ozerov. Video: Eloise & Co., which features Rachel Bell (accordion), Becky Tracy (violin) and Bethany Waickman (guitar) performing “We're Not Broken” by Rachel Bell. Filmed at Jared Flynn's Moon Bridge on the grounds of Green Mountain Orchards, Putney, Vermont, USA, on September 24, 2022. Accordionist and teacher, Rachel Bell has released a new video workshop “Smooth, Beautiful Tunes for Piano Accordion”. This video mini-course includes 19 videos with a total of over an hour and 15 min of instruction. There are 5 pages of sheet music/notes to accompany the videos. The tunes are simple but there's a strong emphasis placed on expanding the tunes as much as possible with lots of chordal and rhythmic variety, harmonies, improvisations, and left hand grooves. Participants can work at their own pace, skip around, review the videos as many times as they want, and use the sheet music resource pages for reinforcement. |

The I All-Russian competition of performers on folk instruments "Yuri Vostrelov Cup" was held in the Organ Hall of the Omsk Philharmonic in Omsk, Russia from June 1st to 4th, 2023. This unique project is inextricably linked with the name of an outstanding musician, Yuri Vostrelov, the first winner of the "World Cup" competition from the USSR, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and Professor of the Gnessin Academy of Music. Every evening after the competitive auditions, the audience enjoyed amazing concerts including a performance by the Russian Chamber Orchestra "LAD" under the direction of artistic director S.E. Bezborodov. The orchestra accompanied the premiere of Alexander Tsygankov's work "The Siberian Ballad" with soloist Yuri Shishkin. The audience also enjoyed the ensemble "Russian Timbre", which was comprised of bayan and accordion players from the Gnessin Academy of Music under the direction of R.G. Kaneev, with soloist Maria Vlasova. Special thanks were expressed to the competition Chairman of the Jury, Alexander Andreevich Tsygankov. This outstanding musician is a national treasure of Russia and the domra. The absolute winner of the first All-Russian competition and the winner of the Grand Prix was Semen Molochkov (Omsk Regional College of Culture and Art, teacher Kononov Yu.M.). The Reunion Island Orchestre Polyphonia (conducted by Pierre Varo), will hold their final concert of the season at the Claude Mahoudeaux College, Saint-André, Reunion Island on June 24th, 2023 at 6.30pm. The group are preparing to represent their country on tour in the USA this year. They will be featured at the Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) festival in concert on July 21st, 2023. Kelsey Lien (picture left) will entertain at the CTAA Meeting, held at Casa Chapala Mexican Cuisine in Austin, Texas, USA on June 26th, 2023 at 7pm. “Kelsey is an award-winning music educator in the New Braunfels schools, and has recently formed the band "Pivo & Polka." He can play a wide variety of instruments, and his talents are often showcased on Mancordion”. Klangbrücken Akademie, a young non-profit association, will tour Germany and Austria for three weeks, giving concerts from the end of June, 2023. Starting in Weimar, Germany, the non-profit concert tour will include social institutions such as hospices and retirement homes, with the aim of delighting audiences with music and culture. Not Just Oompah! will present a new online accordion workshop entitled "Have Accordion, Will Travel!", featuring Courtney von Drehle (picture above). This workshop will be held via Zoom on July 25th, 26th, and 27th, 2023 from 7:00 to 9:30pm Central time each night. (8:00 to 10:30pm Eastern, 6:00 to 8:30pm Mountain, 5:00 to 7:30pm Pacific). Courtney von Drehle is an Emmy Nominated composer and master accordionist. This workshop will expand your repertoire and skills with a variety program that covers three continents in three days while you learn the elements that make each style and of course learn some great songs on the journey. Concepts to discuss: * Teaching skills, such as chords and chord progressions that participants can use. * Embellishments, where needed. * Songs taught will vary in genres, tempos, styles and are FUN for the accordionist and the audience. * July 25 will start with a short “Meet and Greet” to talk about the Workshop Agenda. Von Drehle has a B.A. in music from Marylhurst University and has studied North Indian classical singing. The New Zealand Accordion Association held the annual South Pacific Accordion Championships and Festival on Saturday 3rd June at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre, Epsom, Auckland. On Sunday 4th June, was the Finale Concert at St Georges Church, Takapuna. Finale Concert Performers: Kevin Friedrich and organist Michael Bell, the Massed Orchestra and NSAO also performed works with organ. Other performers included Grayson Masefield, the Australia FunKordeon and the 2023 competition prize winners. The CNIMA directed by Nathalie Boucheix will hold two accordion workshops next month as follows: July 10th to 15th, 2023 July 17th to 22nd, 2023 The workshops are for all ages, levels and styles.
