Akkordeon-Orchester Wesseling 50th Anniversary, Rhineland – Germanyby Rob Howard |
The Akkordeon-Orchester Wesseling, founded on March 28th 1965, this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. Herbert Bolduan was elected Chairman by the parents of the 19 girls and boys aged nine to 14 years at the inaugural meeting in 1965 to found the orchestra. All were students of Michael Frank, music director from Brühl. Gottfried Weber, also from Brühl, became the Musical Director. Both Herbert Bolduan and Gottfried Weber are still active in the club. In 2010, after 45 years service, Gottfried Weber was succeeded as Musical Director by Anita Brandtstäter (picture left). He continues to play the bass in the orchestra. In 2003, for outstanding service to the accordion, Weber was awarded the Rudolf-Würthner medal, one of the highest awards of the German DHV, and in 2011 was appointed by the Association Honorary Conductor. He also received in 2012 the Cultural Medal of the City Wesseling. There are three original members from 1965 in the orchestra: Wolfgang Kursawe, Doris Kursawe, and Dorit Wadehn. On Saturday November 21st, 6.30pm, the orchestra will hold a gala anniversary concert in the auditorium of the Gartenstraße school. The concert will begin with three original compositions: the classically composed ‘Festival Overture’ by Rudolf Würthner, the Hungarian Fantasy ‘Tihany’ by Johan de Nijs, and the bravura piece ‘Variations on a Russian folk song’, also by Rudolf Würthner, in arrangements for solo and orchestra. There will also be the fiery ‘Rojo Tango’ by Pablo Ziegler, hit medleys of Abba and Udo Jürgens through to the symphonic rock ‘Silence and I’ by The Alan Parsons Project. Guest singer is Thorsten Eckhardt. There will also be some surprises on the night. For further information email: a.brandtstaeter@netcologne.de |
