  The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki has been ranked 9th in Performing Arts in the QS World University Rankings 2021. The QS World University Rankings by Subject has listed the best universities that offer degree programmes in performing arts for the sixth time.The Sibelius Academy accordion class was founded in 1977 by Matti Rantanen, who passed the baton to Veli Kujala (picture above left) in October 2020. Kujala’s colleagues are Helka Kymäläinen (accordion pedagogics), Mika Väyrynen (main instrument, chamber music, tuning, prima vista), Matti Rantanen (main instrument), Heidi Velamo (junior academy main instrument) and Niko Kumpuvaara (improvisation and accompaniment). During the past 40+ years of its existence, the Academy accordion class has produced many distinguished artists, laureates of international competitions, significant pedagogues, countless Master of Music degrees, and six Doctor of Music degrees in accordion. |
