On the 5th November, the very popular accordionist Pino Di Modugno celebrated his 80th birthday. On the 15th November, the City of Bari organised an extraordinary concert with the Symphony Orchestra, and the whole "Di Modugno family band" also performing at the Showville, Bari. Pino Di Modugno with the accordion, his sons Nando (guitar), Vito (a true virtuoso of piano and Hammond organ), his nephew Vito Jr (bass) and Mino Petruzzelli (drums). The orchestra was directed by Cettina Donato a famous Sicilian musician. Pino played magically, in his usual extraordinary way, thrilling the audience with his varied repertoire which included a number of well-known songs, like the tangos by Piazzolla, some "evergreen" pop music and popular accordion repertoire such as Dizzy Fingers and Tico Tico. The 700 strong audience included the owner of Beltuna Accordions Arnaldo Mengascini and his wife (picture left), who presented a new accordion as a gift to Pino Di Modugno. This new instrument (Beltuna Spirit model) was made especially for Pino Di Modugno, who immediately used it for the rest of the concert. (music-sheets of Pino Di Modugno available by Wurzburger Musikverlag) Another special guest present that evening was the Director of the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome who was one of the first students of Pino Di Modugno and is today a great friend. He arrival was a very pleasant surprise! |
