Louis Corchia (1935-2020), Coronavirus Victim, Paris – Franceby Rob Howard |
Louis Corchia, one of France’s very popular musette accordionists and also a bandoneon player. He came from a family of musicians, and his father was the accordionist Primo Corchia (1913-97). In 1951 Louis Corchia won the first CMA Trophee Mondial, held in London. In the same year he came second to Maurice Vittenet in the CIA Coupe Mondiale, held in Paris. Corchia went on to a long and very successful professional career that saw him found his own dance orchestra, and perform in the USA, USSR, Japan, and other countries. He made many recordings and appeared in several videos, and composed and arranged a lot of music. His favourite party piece was his arrangement of the ‘Sabre Dance’, a usual feature of his concert performances, and he was also renowned as an exponent of playing tangos. Louis Corchia was a contemporary of Yvette Horner, Andre Verchuren, Marcel Azzola, Maurice Larcange, Aimable, Joss Basselli, and is considered to be the last of the great players of his era. He passed away peacefully in Vincennes, Paris, from coronavirus at the age of 85, and is survived by his wife Jeannine. Louis Corchia has been widely mourned by accordionists all over France and beyond. RIP. |
