The Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) awarded Estonian accordionist Tiit Kalluste (picture left) with a “Merit Award” this month.

On October 13th Tiit Kalluste played a concert with his quintet at the “Jazzkaar” jazz festival which was held at the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn. At the end of the concert the General Secretary of the CIA, Kimmo Mattila, presented Tiit the award for his notable career as an accordionist and a positive co-operation with the CIA.

Kimmo Mattila the CIA General Secretary said: “I like very much Tiit Kalluste’s music and his wonderful way of accordion playing. He has created a personal style combining traditional jazz and contemporary Nordic music. His concert together with young jazz musicians was simply great!”.

The Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) is a worldwide organization consisting of 43 member organizations around the world.

The CIA was founded in 1935, and is one of the oldest international music organization in the world. The CIA is a member of the International Music Council, which is an official partner of the UNESCO.

The Estonian Accordion Association (Eesti Akordioniliit) has been a full member of the CIA since 2004. In March this year Eesti Akordioniliit hosted the annual CIA Winter Congress in Tallinn.

Tiit Kalluste was the President of the Eesti Akordioniliit from 1999 to 2011 and during this time the association was appointed as a Premiere Voting Member of the CIA.

The CIA Merit Award is the highest recognition of the international accordion movement. It is awarded to one or two distinguished musicians each year, who have made an exceptional career with the accordion. The Merit Award is authorised by the CIA General Assembly, thus it reflects a worldwide approval and recognition.

This year the CIA Merit Award was also awarded to (Crystal) Wang Congyu from China.
