Grayson Masefield, Christel Sautaux Perform Concertos, World Premiere - Switzerland

Grayson Masefield, Christel SautauxLate October, Grayson Masefield and Christel Sautaux (picture left) performed four concerts with string orchestra as part of the Swiss Contemporary Music Festival, Forum Wallis, which is held in the Valais region of Switzerland.

Christel Sautaux performed the concerto 'In a Tango State of Mind' by Gubitsch and Grayson Masefield performed the Bach Concerto in F minor for harpsichord and also made the world premiere of 'Constellations II' by Swiss composer Javier Hagen.

Constellations II is a 8-minute work for solo accordion and 17 strings commissioned by HEMU (Haute Ecole de Musique Vaud Valais Fribourg) and was performed with the HEMU string orchestra (Jan Dobrzelewski, director).

Constellationen II splits the string orchestra into 4 quartets - each of them placed in different corners of the performance venue - while double basses and solo accordion remain in the middle of the stage.

The accordion's musical material is a soft and elegic variated dodecaphonic line. As a counterpoint, 4 different musical processes (modules) are combined and superposed to create different space and sound constellations. To use a metaphor, 'Constellationen II' is like an individual path keeping its identity, appearing in changing constellations and periodically recalibrated on an 'eternal' note.

Grayson Masefield will perform the Bach Concerto in F with a string quartet at the 16th Festival Bach de Lausanne on 27th November.
