The Vienna Accordion Club Favoriten (WAF), conducted by Christian Höller, will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a concert on World Accordion Day (WAD). The concert will take place at the Kulturgarage VHS in Vienna, Austria on May 6th and feature the performance of Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" arranged by Thomas Bauer. The club was founded by Prof. Walter Maurer and May 6th was his birthday. He would have reached the age of 92 this year. Harley Jones, CIA Public Relations anecdote: "Prof. Walter Maurer, was Secretary General of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) from 1975 to 2006. At a CIA Summer Congress, I had suggested having a World Accordion Day. The Congress liked the idea and then discussion took place about when? Prof. Walter quickly proposed 6th May, the date in 1829, that Cyrill Demian filed a patent in Vienna for the accordion. Congress approved. With a big smile, I note that Walter forgot to tell Congress that it was also his birthday!" For concert details email: info@akkordeonclub.at |
