AAA Presents Lifetime Achievement Award to Joey Miskulin - USA

Carrozza Scholarships signJoseph Ciccone and Joey MiskulinPicture above: Joey Miskulin and wife Patti, left is daughter Katie and husband Brian O'Boyle.

The American Accordionists’ Association presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Joey Miskulin during the Carrozza Scholarship Dinner on Sunday, September 8, 2019.

This honor is in recognition of the exceptionally prolific contribution Joey Miskulin has made to the recording industry, having played on hundreds of albums with many of country and popular music’s best known names over many years. AAA Board member Dominic Karcic was the Chairman and Master of Ceremonies.

Since the 1970s, Joey Miskulin has recorded with the likes of Paul McCartney, U2, John Denver, Ricky Skaggs, Andy Williams, Ricky Van Shelton, Emmylou Harris, Frankie Yankovic, Garth Brooks, to name but some. Also a singer, arranger, and producer, Joey Miskulin is well known for performing country music as ‘Joey the Cowpolka King’ with the band Riders in the Sky and polkas with Frankie Yankovic, but his versatility extends into jazz, evidenced by his album, ‘The Other Side of the Fence’.

Also in 1990 for his ground breaking ‘Accordion Styles and Techniques’ video/DVD, which was the first video of its kind. Miskulin’s production credits include ‘Toy Story’ for Disney/Pixar, and recently in Shanghai, China, where he spent two weeks working with the Walt Disney Company.

About 125 people enjoyed great entertainment, education, and a wonderful dinner with dancing. The program featured the Long Island Accordion Alliance who provided music.

The program began with the Welcome and Benediction given by Dr. Joseph A. Ciccone, President of the American Accordionists’ Association. Enjoyable dance music was provided by accordionists Mario Tacca, Frank Toscano, Dominic Karcic with Phil Battiston on percussion/vocals.

Everyone was delighted by the concert program presented by accordionist Mario Tacca and singer Mary Mancini. The two winners of the 2019 Carrozza Scholarship Competition performed. Gia Ciccone played “Carnival of Venice”. Nathan Chapeton who represented the USA at the 2019 Coupe Mondiale performed an emotional “Schindler’s List”. Nathan has studied for over ten years with AAA Board of Directors member and teacher, Mary Tokarski.

He recently placed 16th in the Coupe Mondiale Master Competition in Shenzhen, China in a field of 49 contestants. Gia Ciccone, 12 year old accordionist is a 7th grade student and presently studies with Mario Tacca. She started taking accordion sessions at the age of 5 with her Great Uncle, Maestro Carmen Carrozza. She has won many prizes. Read more details about Nathan and Gia in the October www.accordionusa.com news.

Joey Miskulin’s award was presented by AAA President Dr. Joseph Ciccone (picture right) and the Board of Directors. Joey entertained everyone with a medley. Joey is friendly, engaging, and very modest about his musical gifts and many accomplishments in the musical world.

Save the date for July 10, 2020 when Joey Miskulin will be the featured artist at the AAA Festival at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites in Alexandria, VA. The AAA Festival takes place from July 9-12, 202 and also features Cory Pesaturo and Sam Reider. Linda Soley Reed will receive the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award at that time.

An expanded article about this event will be published in the next USA News, 1st October.

Rob Howard New Book – Accordion Anthology 2 – UK

Accordion Anthology
Rob HowardEarlier this year Rob Howard was asked by the British Music Hall Society to write an article about the involvement of accordions and other free reed instruments in the eras of music halls and variety theatres. The nine previously published books are available online at: Rob Howard

“Accordion Anthology 2” will be available from October 18th and presents many more accordion related articles and biographies, including interesting autobiographical contributions from well-known players.

Like its predecessor, ‘Accordion Anthology’ (still available), this is a near A4 sized high quality hardback, fully illustrated, and aimed at enthusiasts.

Cost: £15 + £3p/p
Overseas prices including p/p are: EU – 27 Euro, USA/Canada/Australia - $37

Passing of Count Guido Robert Deiro (1938 - 2019) - USA

Guido Deiro Snr. and Jnr.
Video and musical tribute by Cory Pesaturo, Ave Maria by Franz Schubert

Count Guido Robert DeiroVideo and musical tribute by Cory Pesaturo, Ave Maria by Franz Schubert. Cory is playing the historic last Vaudeville accordion of Guido Snr. which he played from 1936 to about 1940. The only accordion he ever played that had his name on it, Guido Jr. claimed.

On September 12th, 2019 Count Guido Robert Deiro passed away in a Las Vegas hospital. Born Feb. 18, 1938, he was 81 years of age and is survived by his wife Joan, his children and grandchildren. There will be no wake funeral or celebration of life.

Eulogy by Cory Pesaturo

- A Military Test Pilot (one of the most dangerous jobs in the world)
- Awarded for his Meteorite findings
- One of the first auctioneers of hotels in the country and First in Nevada
- An Official Count, & Grand Chancellor of the ancient chivalry Order of St. John
- One of the first Plane Racers
- Massively involved in world charity donations
- Was Knighted
- An FOC rated Fencing Referee and is credentialed by the Academie d’Armes Internationale and US Fencing Coaches Association and former Chaiman of the Nevada Division of the US Fencing Association
- Created a fake airline with the CIA during the Cold War to help with efforts in Africa and flew many secret missions there and was involved in gun fights
- Auctioneer of collectable coins
- Was friends with the early Jewish Mafia of Las Vegas
- Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award
- On the board of the Nevada Museum of Art for his work to help artists
- A racecar driver and owner of many high performance race cars
- A boat captain
- Brought Pavorotti to Las Vegas for the first time
- A member of the Quiet Birdman
- One of the pioneers of Earth Art
- Operated one of the first gyms in Las Vegas
- An author
- Was a Boss on the Casino Floor for card games
- An actor in various movies and was on the Board of Directors of the International Film Festival CineVegas, and was a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild
- Howard Hughes’ personal pilot
and last of all,
- Spent 10 years organizing and cataloguing his fathers music, pictures, items, and data, along with writing the book “Mae West and the Count” which came out only a few months ago.

This was the life of 1 single man who became one of my dearest friends in my entire life, and my favorite fan; Count Guido Robert Deiro. We so sadly lost him this week.

And trust me; there is more. There are also many more “First in Las Vegas” and “First in Nevada” records I’m missing. It is simply too much to remember.

All of it sounds impossible and simply not-believable. But the son of the "Father of the Piano Accordion" had everything documented to go along with a gargantuan amount of evidence for everything he said, from a Cuban Sargent’s medal given to him by one of his Nigerian Soldier’s during his secret trips to Africa, to his Ferrari Club of Nevada badge, to the actual meteorite he found, to his mountain of certificates from every field of the world, to pictures with Howard Hughes and parties he was invited to which included the likes of William Randolph Hearst, to videos of him in his prototype race car.

As someone that spent so many hours with him on the phone, and was at his house 4 times for 10 days scoring through piles of objects, I can tell you; It was all there. It was all true.

His incredible memory of pilot friends who died in the 50’s to who ran what organization that he dealt with in the 70’s or what secretary of a politician he had to smooth over to get a deal done in the 90’s was savant-like. He was, and may still be in 2019, the "Most Interesting Man in the World".

This week, we have lost one of the great Renascence Men of the 20th century, and our closest connection to Piano Accordion History in North America. The man who started it all.

Musically,

Cory Pesaturo
