Raimo Vertainen & “Guardia Nueva” Summer Tour, Finland then Shenzhen, China

Guardia Nueva with vocalistTango Orchestra “Guardia Nueva” conducted by Musical Director Raimo Vertainen toured Finland last month presenting concerts at some of Finland’s largest festivals.

Their tour included performances at the Jyvsäkylä Arts Festival, Seinäjoki Tango Festival (to over 3,000 audience), Kiuruvesi Festival (3,500 audience) and at the Lohtaja Church, where they were joined by jazz and soul singer Johanna Försti.

The orchestra’s performance at the Jyvsäkylä 30th Anniversary Jubilee in Finland included soloist Arja Koriseva (picture left), a famous Finnish artist.

Once this concert tour was finished, Raimo Vertainen was traveling to Shenzhen China where he attended his first Coupe Mondiale as a member of the CIA Music Committee, the committee which selects the jury and where Raimo was also Chairman of the Jury for the World Music Ensemble category completing a very intense musical month.

2020 AAA Festival Dates Announced, July 8th to 12th – USA

Joe Ciccone and Linda Solely ReedThe American Accordion Association have announced their 2020 Festival will be held at Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites in Alexandria, VA from July 8th to 12th, 2020.

The festival will include guest artists Sam Reider, Cory Pesaturo, Joey Miskulin, a festival orchestra conducted by Mary Tokarski plus competitions, workshops and much more.

Many will also be attending to applaud the Lifetime Achievement Award honoring Linda Solely Reed for her enormous contribution to the AAA from the 1970's through until today including being AAA President for many years. Picture right with currrent AAA President Joe Ciccone.

Accordion Video Featuring Alexander Poeluev Wins World Street Film Festival Award - Russia

Film awardThe World Street Film Festival was held in Rostov-on-Don, Russia on August 23rd and 24th. The event included a special "Rostov on the screen" which presented videos on the big screen.

An accordion video of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen was awarded the special prize “A New View of the Region" (picture right). In addition to the accordion, the video shows footage of the State Nature National Park “Rostovskiy” in Russia, the Church Surb-Karapet ruins (in Nesvetai Village), Miasnikov District and Rostov region, Russia.

Video Performers: Alexander Poeluev (accordion, arranger), Roman Kirimeev (shooting, editor), Dmitry Vodogretskiy (sound engineer), Elizaveta Poelueva (scriptwriter, producer).

The video has now been entered in another competition entitled "Na Blago Mira" (For the Benefit of the world"). Round 1 of this competition depends on public votes. If the video gets enough votes it will be included on a short list, and jury members will watch the videos and decide who is the best.

2019 Strumenti&Musica Festival, 20-24 November 2019, Spoleto - Italy

2019 Strumenti&Musica Festival, Spoleto
The Strumenti&Musica Festival is an event organized in Spoleto by the Cultural Association Italian Accordion Culture (IAC) and Ars Spoletium Publisher and Recording.

Mirco Patarini is the festival Artistic Director and Michele Rossetti is Artistic Director of the Spoletto International Piano Competition.

There is a large international piano competition and on the 22nd November evening is a concert which features Samuele Telari (accordion) and pianist Lucrezia Proietti at the Palazzo Leti Sansi.

An important part of the 2019 Strumenti&Musica Festival is the 3rd International Competition for Composition “Città di Spoleto”. Each applicant may submit one or more compositions for:
a) piano and accordion
b) piano (solo)
c) accordion (solo)
d) clarinet, piano and accordion
e) clarinet and accordion
Each composition should not exceed 12 minutes.

2019 WAO PosterThe Accordion Association of Chinese Musicians' Association (CAA) welcomed the World Accordion Orchestra XI to the Final Concert of the 72nd Coupe Mondiale Festival in Shenzhen, China, from August 12th to 17th, 2019.

The World Accordion Orchestra XI of approximately 120 players were led by famous Chinese conductor Chen Weiliang and the amazing Joan Sommers, founder and also Musical Director of the World Accordion Orchestra XI.

5th Appaloosa Music Festival, Virginia - USA

Appaloosa
Dan Fedoryka is the accordionist for “Scythian”, a Celtic/folk/rock band that hosts Appaloosa, a 3-day music festival in Front Royal, Virginia, USA every Labor Day weekend (August 30th to September 1st this year).

The festival features rising stars in Bluegrass, Americana and Celtic Music and takes place on a horse ranch campground nestled in the Shenandoah Valley. "Scythian" is celebrating 15 years as a band in conjunction with the 5th Annual Appaloosa Festival.

International Accordion Festival at Russian "Festival of the Axe" - Siberia

NotonThe 15th “Festival of the Axe” wood carving festival took place in the city of Tomsk in Western Siberia recently. This is an annual event which attracts over 400,000 visitors and participants from 37 countries and over 30 republics and regions of Russia.

This year, for the first time the event was held in conjunction with the International Accordion Festival "Bayan Reunited with Friends".

Accordion Entertains at 2019 Polish Cultural Festival - Canada

The 7th annual Polish Cultural Festival will be held at Shipbuilders' Square in North Vancouver on September 8th from 1pm to 8pm. The event will feature Polish music, singing and folk dancing, a special program for children and youth, activities, sing along and more. Vendors will be selling Polish T-shirts and accessories, jewelery, arts and crafts, as well as plenty of delicious traditional Polish food such as sausages, perogis and pastries.

The Parno Drom band which includes accordionist Bob Kozak will entertain at the festival with their Eastern European Romani (Gypsy) style music and songs from Russia, Poland, Hungary and beyond.

Admission is free.

Duo Contrastes Concert – Colombia

2019 Oulun Music Festival - Finland

Duo “Vilda” which includes accordionist Viivi Saarenkylä and indigenous Samí singer Hildá Länsman will entertain at the Oulun Music Festival (Oulun Musiikkijuhlat) in Teatterikuoppa, Revontie 45, 90830 Haukipudas, on September 14th.

The duo will perform original music from their latest album Vildaluodda - Wildprint, which is influenced by northern nature, traditional Samí joik and Finnish folk, and pop music!

Heinrich BiegenzahnA “Concert Evening” (Konzertabend) will be held on September 20th at the Klavier Galerie, Kaiserstraße 10 in Vienna.

2019 Oktoberfest Munich – Germany

The 2019 Oktoberfest Munich will be held from September 21st to October 6th in Theresienwiese, Munich, Germany.

The festival will include an opening ceremony, a variety of parades, concerts, children’s activities, fairground rides and a church service.

Over 300 musicians are expected to take part in a unique performance of famous and popular Bavarian marches and songs in front of the picturesque backdrop of the Bavaria statue. For the grand finale, thousands of colorful balloons will be released into the sky in front of the Bavaria statue, while the audience sings along to the Bavarian anthem at the top of their voices.

The 24th Le Grand Soufflet International Accordion Festival will be held at the Centre Culturel Pôle Sud, in Chartres-de-Bretagne, Ille-et-Vilaine (French Brittany) from October 2nd to 12th. The Artistic Director is Etienne Grandjean.

The festival is now an important festival in France dedicated to the accordion. Over 15,000 people attend each year, and performances are given in 30 to 40 venues, which can host up to 500 people.

The purpose of the festival is to show the modern diversity of the accordion in a variety of styles such as electronic, punk, rock, experimental etc.

This year artists from all over the world have been invited to show different styles of music (Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Madagascar, Finland, etc) as well as young promising artists from France and other countries.

London Tango Concert, Romano Viazzani – England

Romano Viazzani EnsembleThe Romano Viazzani Ensemble will give a tango concert at Pizza Express in Holborn, London on October 13th.

Their program will include selection of Argentine tangos from the music of Astor Piazzolla as well as traditional Argentine and European Tangos.
