‘The Shanghai Express’ by Rene Mairis, Isle of Wight – UKby Rob Howard |
‘The Shanghai Express’ is the first composition for accordion orchestra by accordionist and composer Rene Mairis (picture left at a rehearsal), from the Isle of Wight. It was performed at St Audries Bay Accordion Week and by the Bellows and Waves Orchestra (MD Ian Watson) at Emmanuel Church in Ilfracombe, Devon, in 2016. It is for advanced orchestra. Rene Mairis, a flute and accordion player originally from Cornwall, now lives on the Isle of Wight. Rene studied at the Welsh College of Music and Drama and Cardiff. She played with Colin Whitfield's Accordion Orchestra in Southampton for a few years having fallen in love with the accordion whilst in Bulgaria. Rene enjoys composing and arranging for the accordion, pieces such as ‘Lament for Deefer’, ‘The Inca Trail’, ‘Kamchatka’, ‘Place du Tertre’, and a suite in four movements based on characters from Winnie the Pooh – ‘The Hundred Acre Wood’.
