CIA Winter Congress graphic
Georg HettmannThe Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) held their 137th General Assembly of Delegates (Winter Congress) in Nürnberg, Germany, from December 2-4, 2016.

The event was hosted by a CIA founding member, the Deutscher Harmonika-Verband e.V. (DHV) in conjunction with the Gala 70th Anniversary Concert of the renowned Nürnberger Akkordeonorchester Willi Münch e. V., under the direction of Stefan Hippe. Full concert report next article.

Delegates from as far away as New Zealand, Brazil, the USA and throughout Europe and Scandinavia, were welcomed to an opening reception and dinner by event organizer Georg Hettmann. Hosted in the beautiful city of Nürnberg, members were able to enjoy the rich heritage of the city, as well as the one of the world's most famous Christmas Markets which had just opened for the holiday season.

This annual series of meetings allows the various committees and General Assembly to conduct the business of the CIA. The various committees included the Executive Committee, the Music Committee and the World Accordion Museum Alliance.

Several awards were decided at the Winter Congress as follows: CIA Merit Award for "Outstanding Contributions to the International Accordion Movement" being awarded to Zorica Karakutovska (Macedonia) and Mika Väyrynen (Finland).

The Honored Friend of the Accordion Award is recognition to those who make outstanding contributions to their respective national accordion movements and may or may not be accordionists. This year the recipients were Anna Bodell (United Kingdom), Amando Bugari (Italy) and Wolfram Märzendorfer (Austria).

The Music Committee reported a change of status for promoting the Digital Accordion. In constantly exploring new ways to promote the accordion and its various genres, the CIA has decided to showcase the Digital Accordion in a concert, rather than a competitive setting. For 2017, experts in the field of the Digital accordion will be invited to promote this exciting area of the accordion field in concert to highlight the various aspects of the technology.

The World Accordion Orchestra which has enjoyed eight editions thus far, will be held in Osimo, on the Sunday, 10 September 2017, in an afternoon concert at the conclusion of the Coupe Mondiale festival. The World Accordion Orchestra IX, to be organized by founder of the World Accordion Orchestra Joan Cochran Sommers (Honorary Member of the CIA) will be comprised of guest orchestras and International Delegates and guests.
