Book signing with Marion Jacobsen, California – USAby Rob Howard |
New York-based author Marion Jacobsen will be visiting Smythe's Accordion Center, 2511 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612, to read excerpts from her book ‘Squeeze This: A Cultural History of the Accordion’ on Friday August 17th, 6-8pm. Smythe's Accordion Center will host her free book signing with a small party with refreshments. There will be acoustic performances by Rob Reich, Whiskey & Women, and Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic. ‘Squeeze This!: A Cultural History of the Accordion’ traces the evolution of the accordion in the USA, and its cultural significance over the course of the 20th Century. From the introduction of elaborately decorated European models imported onto the American vaudeville stage and the instrument's celebration by ethnic musical communities and mainstream audiences alike, to the accordion-infused pop paradies by the likes of ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, Marion Jacobson considers the accordion's contradictory status as both an ‘outsider’ instrument and as a major force in popular music in the 20th Century.
