Howard
'Tango
Fire' is a show that has recently toured South Africa, performing
in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
'Tango Fire', presented by Estampas Portenas, stars 10 dancers accompanied
by the band Quatrotango (featuring Hugo Satorre on bandoneon), as
well as Diego Fama who portrays the role of poet and singer of lyrical
songs. This slick production is performed to live music and consists
of fusing jazz, classical and traditional South American sounds.
The music has been described as being 'twisty, dissonant and kicky'
as the dance steps, and faster than seems possible, with notes chasing
each other. Dressed in high split cocktail dresses, feather boas and
fishnet stockings, five couples representing the young company, Estampas
Portenas, perform the tango, Argentina's gift to the dance world.
Estampas Portenas was founded in Buenos Aires in 1996 by the distinguished
Argentine ballerina and choreographer, Carolina Soler. They have performed
at festivals worldwide and have toured Australia and New Zealand several
times.
