Members
of the Confederation
Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) Executive Committee,
Music Committee and Delegates conducted their 115th General Assembly
and Winter Congress in Ikaalinen, Finland, from February 24th to
28th 2006.
Organized by CIA Vice President Kimmo Mattila, who is President
of the CIA member in Finland 'Suomen Harmonikkaliitto' (Finnish
Accordion Association), the CIA also celebrated the official opening
of their archive collection, which is housed at the Hanuritalo (Accordion
House).
The exciting event gave Delegates the opportunity to conduct their
CIA international business as well as learn about the Finnish Accordion
Culture headquartered in Ikaalinen, including the Finnish Accordion
Association with over 5,000 members, the Finnish Accordion Institute,
which publishes music and recordings, the Sata-Häme Soi Ikaalinen
Accordion Festival, which plays to over 40,000 people at their summer
festival, the Harmonikanrakennus Accordion Manufacturing and Repair
School, and the Ikaalinen Accordion Museum containing over 100 instruments.
Delegates were invited to take part in the Sata-Häme Soi and
Finnish Accordion Association cruise, where 2,600 people travelled
aboard the Silja Europa Cruise line from Turku to Sweden and back.
The cruise featured accordion music, dancing, performances, a display
of instruments, music and recordings as well as the semi-finals
for the Silver and Golden Accordion competitions. The finals are
held during the summer festival as part of a live TV show.
The
opening of the CIA Archives took place at an international Press
conference on February 24th 2006. The archives contain documents,
music, programs, press coverage, recordings and much more highlighting
not only the history of the CIA,
but also of the instrument, its repertoire and the development of
the accordion in various countries around the world.
Winter Congress organizer Kimmo Mattlia, Sata-Häme Soi Director
Sirpa Sippola and Public Relations Manager Minna Plihtari provided
an excellent array of activities including meetings, luncheons,
receptions, visits, concerts as well as an exciting afternoon of

Vladimir
Auraliov Passes Away, Voronez - Russia
Contributed by Harley
Jones
On February 21st 2006, Vladimir Auraliov,
at the age of 58 years, died suddenly of a heart attack in Voronez,
a city about half way between Rostok and Moscow. In 1976, Auraliov
was the winner of the Klingenthal
International Accordion Competition top solo class.
He later founded the accordion manufacturer AKKO, a small family
owned accordion manufacturing business producing small to full size
instruments, both piano, button and bayan types. Several highly
placed Coupe
Mondiale competitors have used these instruments in recent years.
At the time of his death, Auraliov was building a concert hall in
memory of his teacher, Nikolai
Chaikon, which is not fully completed. Our sympathy is extended
to his wife and family.

Accordions
and Jazz festivals, New South Wales - Australia
Contributed by Peter Rappolt
Accordions
seem to be making a return to the jazz fraternity in NSW. Marie Rappolt,
with Viva the band, introduced her accordion to jazz festivals in
2001, and has appeared at other jazz festivals at Newcastle, Gold
Coast, Thredbo, Morpeth, Illawarra, Kiama, Manly, Darling Harbour
and Jazz at the QVB.
Since then other accordionists have performed at jazz festivals. Kim
Till appeared at Thredbo last year and Stephan Sernik with his band,
Psycho Zydeco, will be appearing at Thredbo in 2006. The 19th Yalumba
Jazz Festival, Thredbo, is a 3-day celebration of jazz, featuring
over 120 performers, offering a unique environment to enjoy some of
Australia's finest jazz musicians, including special overseas guests,
while experiencing the breathtaking mountain scenery.
Marie and Viva the band was a hit last year at the Credo, The Terrace
and Eagles Nest restaurants. Their repertoire includes delightful
harmony vocals, plus a diverse repertoire of Jazz , Swing, Gypsy Jazz,
Latin, Salsa, French, Spanish, Hungarian, Russian, and stunning show
tunes on the accordion.
