Accordion Days Of Kuhmo - A Seminary in Finland

Accordion festival of Kuhmo was held for the third time on November 3rd - 9th in West Finland. The festival has become broader with higher spirits each year, consisting now of six concerts and four courses in four different cities. This year over 30 young players participated in the workshops.

The guest performers and teachers were professor Jon Faukstad (Oslo), Jukka-Pekka Kuusela (Kuhmo), Henrik Sandas (Kuopio). The themes of the festival were "Baroque without Bach", "Symphonic Accordion", "Accordion Duos", "Norwegian Music" and new works by Vladimir Zubitsky. The program of the festival was planned by Artistic Director Kalle Valimaa, who also participated in each concert as a solist or chamber musician with Henrika Fagerlund (double bass) and Tania Hongisto (piano).

La Quartada Tango concert - Argentina

After a very successful international tour with concerts at the International Arts Festival in Christchurch, New Zealand and in Australia at the Victorian Arts Centre (Melbourne), Parramatta Riverside Theatre (Sydney) and the famous Sydney Opera House, the La Quartada Tango group is again back in Argentina.

The group which features Hugo Satorre (Bandoneón) performed on the 14 November in the Galería at the Viejo Hotel in San Telmo, a suburb of Buenos Aires, to a packed house of fans happy to have them back home again.

Øivind Farmen World Premiere, Concerto for Accordion and Symphonic Band - Norway

On 13 November, accordionist Øivind Farmen performed the world premiere of Concerto for Accordion and Symphonic Band by Erlend Skomsvoll. Skomsvoll is one of the "hottest" names in Norwegian music right now and this year, he received the Norwegian Grammy for best jazz album. He has just released a new album with his group "Come Shine" and the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra.

Concerto for Accordion and Symphonic Band is not a jazz composition. It is composed in contemporary style and the premiere was performed with the Trøndelag Army Band conducted by Trond Korsgård. Korsgård was awarded "Conductor of the Year" in Norway in 2002.

Skomsvoll has previously written one solo piece for accordion and this very successful new Concerto will be performed again by Øivind Farmen in February 2004.

Uxbridge Accordion Club "Christmas Party Dance" - London

Peter Boorman is the featured guest at the Uxbridge Accordion Club "Christmas Party Dance", Singalong and American Supper to be held on the 8th of December at "The Anglers Retreat" near Heathrow Airport. Guests are invited bring along their musical instruments and join in "A Seasonal Christmas Carol Play-along"

Victor Prieto Duo performing in NY - USA

Victor Prieto (accordion) and El Maestro Julio Santillan (guitar) will entertain on the 21 November at Les Deux Gamins and on the 22 November at Paradou in Brooklyn. Victor has been receiving outstanding reviews for innovative jazz performance and is the accordion tutor at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Boston.

Day of Saint Cecilia and 5th National Meeting of Accordionists - Argentina

On the 21st and 22nd of November there will be a celebration of the "Day of Saint Cecilia" the universal patron of music. Additionally, the fifth National Meeting of Accordionists will take place in Parana the next weekend. This will unite in one night some of the most outstanding performers of the instrument in this country.

Organized by the musical Institute Raul Varelli, the "Day of Saint Cecilia" has become a classic annual event of Parana city and is an attractive program for those who enjoy accordion music. One of stars will be the well-known Ildo Patriarch, considered one of the finest accordionists in Argentina.

Other performers include: Alexander Walls, Raul Varelli Trio, Aníbal Go'mez, Florence Herrera, Aldo Taborda, Diego Lipsky, Francisco Musso, Rubén Cena, Jose Benavídez, Luis Farías, Guillermo Ayala, the students of the Institute Raul Varelli and the dramatic tenor Ricardo Militello. The accordion will be presented in various formats by the many performers.

Florida Accordion Convention "Smash!" - USA

The annual Florida Accordion Convention "Smash!" took place on November 14 and 15 in Orlando at the Holiday Inn University. There were many performers such as the "K" Trio, Andy Bakke, Jimmy Bubaloni, Maricarmen Vazquez, Michael Greenspan, Carmen Vitanza, Joe Zalewski, Vince Aleandri, Bonnie Birkch (pictured) Mirko Roknich and many more. Members from as far away as Connecticut, Texas, Massachusetts, and Tennessee...and of course Florida were attending and had a great time.

 Giorgio Dellarole's Busy Concert Schedule - Italy

Giorgio Dellarole is continuing a busy schedule of concerts in Italy over the coming weeks. On 11th November, George Dellarole will perform a solo concert in Gardone, the program of which will include works by Scarlatti, Moretti, Pozzoli, Piazzolla and others. On 19th November, he will perform solo at the Akkordeon Ensemble of Aosta concert in Turin

Dellarole is then performing with the Trio "Corelli", Massimiliano Limonetti (clarinet) and Antonio Bag (violin) in Rosignano on the 13th December, in Villamiroglio on the 27th December and in Aymavilles on the 29th December. For further details visit: www.accordions.com/dellarole.
 


North East Accordion Festival - USA

The Minnesota Accordion Club held their "NE Accordion Festival 2003" on November 7th and 8th at Kramarczuk's East European Deli. Some of the performers included:
Skeets Langley & the Tantara Trio, Dan Newton & the Cafe Accordion Trio, Mike Alongi, Larry Malmberg, Minnesota Accordion Orchestra, Czech Area Concertina Club, Tom Sullivan and Hank Thunander.
The clubs next event is Accordion Amateur Hour at Kramarczuk's Deli hosted by Tom Sullivan on 22nd November.

Magazine and Forum Merger - USA and UK

Accordion Freedom Forum owner Ernesto Aiello and Stephen Navoyosky (moderator) and the Accordion Times and News (UK) owner Loretta Rolston recently announced a merger with the following aims: To better the accordion community and help all accordionists, To also publish CD reviews, MIDI/Electronic advice, Polka/Waltz articles, supply MIDI files, audio files and many other products to accordionists and music lovers.
