Did you know? The Accordionists and Teachers Guild, Int. (ATG) was established in 1940 by a group of 29 founding members including ATG President Emeritus – the late Mr. Anthony Galla-Rini, with the purpose of furthering the progress of the accordion by improving teaching standards, music, and all phases of music education. The ATG has sponsored the Accordion Conference Week at the famous National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan and has worked with the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) which is part of the National Association of Education.

The ATG has also commissioned numerous compositions for the accordion by such composers as Alan Hovhaness, Ole Schmidt, Torbjorn Lundquist, Francis Pyle and Ernst Krenek.

The ATG holds its annual festival each summer, and this year it will be held in San Francisco, CA from July 23-26, 2014. One of the goals of the ATG is to promote new music for the accordion, and new works are featured or premiered at the annual festival. In celebration of World Accordion Day, the ATG has releasing this brand new work for accordion.

Music for Accordion, Cello and Water Bottle by Joshua Wise
Samantha Jarquio Wagner (accordion), Austin Coop (water bottle), Joshua Wise (cellist and composer)

The video with MUSIC FOR ACCORDION, CELLO, AND WATER BOTTLE was one of the compositions performed on the Senior Recital of UMKC Composition Major, Joshua Wise. Josh is now moving to Los Angeles to continue his quest to be a composer of music for films. On his recital, in addition to the piece which included accordion, he had his compositions for percussion solo, a chamber ensemble with winds, strings and percussion, a solo piece for trombone and fixed media, a string quartet, wind ensemble, and a Film Composer Demo Reel of some length.

On the jury were three faculty members including Dr. Paul Rudy who composed the accordion solo BENNACHIE which Stas Venglevski has given a recent world premiere performance at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as well as during his recent three-week concert tour throughout Switzerland, where it met with great audience approval. Stas will also be performing this exceedingly fine solo on various concerts including one at the 2014 ATG Festival in San Francisco.

In their ongoing quest to promote new music for the accordion, the 2014 ATG Festival includes a Competition for Original Accordion Compositions this year. There is no entry fee and the competition is offering three prizes with cash awards and possible performance during the Festival in San Francisco. The regulations may be accessed on the ATG website: www.accordions.com/atg New composers or those who have never written for the accordion are encouraged to enter.

Information about the competition or the accordion may also be obtained from Joansommers@kc.rr.com

As we celebrate World Accordion Day, we reflect on the wonderful people that shared in the development of the accordion in the United States. One of these pioneers, was Dr. Willard Palmer, well known of course for the Palmer and Hughes Accordion Method book. He is pictured here conducting the ATG Festival Orchestra in 1992 in Chicago, Illinois.

You'll notice CIA Vice President Joan Cochran Sommers as Concert Master, and CIA Ambassador Kevin Friedrich sitting next to her!
