Contributed by Kevin Friedrich

The 60th Anniversary Coupe Mondiale of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) will be held from August 13th to 18th 2007 in Alexandria, Virginia, Washington DC. Jointly hosted by the Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International (ATG) and the American Accordionists' Association (AAA), this is the first time the event will be held in the USA for 25 years.

The competition will feature six categories of competition including the 60th Anniversary Coupe Mondiale, the International Competition for Piano Accordion, the Junior Coupe Mondiale, both the Senior and Junior International Competitions for Virtuoso Entertainment Music and the International Competition for Ensemble Music.

In addition to the CIA competitions, other highlights include nightly concerts, the performance of the World Accordion Orchestra directed by Joan C. Sommers, a massed band performance on the steps for US Capitol building, a sightseeing tour of Washington, DC, the 60th Anniversary Coupe Mondiale Gala Banquet, performances by the US Army and the US Air Force Bands, each featuring an accordionist, the international competition for female accordionists, in honor of Maddalena Belfiore, the AAA and ATG festival competitions, and much more.

The famed Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will feature a weeklong series of accordion concerts on their Millennium Stage. All concerts are open to the public and broadcast live on their simultaneous webcast.

8th International Accordion Festival, Vienna - Austria

For the 8th time, the International Accordion Festival takes place on Viennas stages. In the Danube metropolis, accordion sounds - either experimental, traditional or both - will expel the winter and introduce the spring. The festival offers a forum for networking, communication, discussions and interaction, thus creating structures for relaxation, concentrated listening and socialising.

From February 24th to March 25th, 200 artistes from 27 countries will perform 30 concerts, including 12 double concerts!. Their list sounds like a ‘Who’s Who’ of the accordion: Otto Lechner, Krzysztof Dobrek, Martin Lubenov, Klaus Paier, Sascha Shevchenko, Renato Borghetti in duo with his idol Raúl Barboza, the legendary Ciro Perez, with his Trio P.S.P., Ulrich Kodjo Wendt, Renato Borghetti, Marinette Bonnert & Pere Romaní, Riccardo Tesi, Motion Trio, Richard Galliano, Beni Schmid, with Stian Carstensen and Georg Breinschmied, Chili Cheeps, Tini Trampler, Heinz Ditsch, Stefan Sterzinger, Attwenger and Roland Neuwirth, Madagascar All Stars and Zamballarana, to name just a few. Female artistes will be present more than ever: R. Garniez, E. Scollo & C.Pfeifer, T. Trampler, B. Faast, Fatima Spar, J. Neundlinger, M. Bonnert, D. Sadeh, A. Wiehmann, E. Petrova, A. Bennent, V. Pfeil, M. Rahmann, M. Jessa, Iva Nova and many more.

Accordion - this stands for more than one musical style, more than one individual type of artistic language - accordion, this is life-style!

The Victor Prieto Trio includes Carlo deRosa - bass and Vince Cherico - drums.

The magazine ‘All About Jazz’ says "Spanish-born jazz accordionist Victor Prieto is the most exciting such player to come on the scene since Eddie Monteiro. Melding Argentine and Brazilian influences with a bop sensibility, Prieto gives the lie to all of the nasty things that have been said over the years about the much-maligned squeezebox."
