72nd International Coupe Mondiale Entry Closing Date – Chinaby Kimmo Mattila Secretary General, Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) |
CIA Secretary General Kimmo Mattila announces that the closing date for the 2019 Coupe Mondiale entries is June 30th, 2019. Entries can be sent in via the online entry system until this date. Kimmo asks that you complete the registration of delegates/jury members as soon as possible, if you have not done so already. This is very important so the organization can book the hotel rooms. CIA President Mirco Patarini invites all (41) CIA members to register delegates to the 142nd International Congress of Delegates which meets twice in Shenzhen. The 72nd Coupe Mondiale will be held from August 12th to 17th, 2019 in Shenzhen, China hosted by The Accordion Association of Chinese Musicians' Association (CAA). President Li Cong and his Organising Committee welcomes everyone to enjoy famous Chinese hospitality and wonderful music in the modern Xixiang Music Valley facility in Shenzhen. The Coupe Mondiale in China will be an outstanding event including competitions, concerts, meetings and various musical events. Shenzhen is a big modern town, where you can find many interesting attractions during the Coupe Mondiale week. 19th Accordion Festival - Israelby Harley Jones |

The annual Israeli Accordion Festival was held recently in the amphitheater of Nahalal, an agricultural settlement in the valley of Yizrael during “Days of milk and honey”. The event is dedicated to the memory of Yehuda Oppenheimer, who owns the title of “The Prophet of the Accordion in Israel”. Over 3,000 people gathered from all over the country to listen to talented Israeli and well known accordion players play a variety of classical, Balkan, French, Piazzolla and Israeli music. Among the artists, was Emil Aibinder (picture below with his group) who's popular group has performed extensively. Other artists included Uzi Rosenblat (picture right), Vitali Podolsky (picture right lower), Yossi Gruska and the Bustenaim Orchestra (of over 30 players – accordion and other instruments, picture above). This orchestra was founded by Yehuda’s student Shuki Medanes and conducted by Mr. Hodorov. 25 years ago Techiya and Shmulik Kalosh started the accordion gathering in the yard of their home. Shmulik was Yehuda’s student and Techiya was the organizer. As the festival grew, it moved to the Yizrael Valley. Techiya and Shmulik are the “beating heart” of the festival as they invite the musicians and put together the program. |
Mirco Patarini Performs with Harbin Symphony Orchestra – Chinaby Harley Jones |
On 14th June in Harbin City, Mirco Patarini (solo accordion) performed a concert with Roberto Molinelli (Italy, Conductor), the Harbin Symphony Orchestra and opera singers who are Professors at Harbin Normal University. Organized under the direction of Wang Hongyu (organizer of the Harbin Accordion Festival), the program was an “Italian Opera Promenade” which included famous and beautiful Italian operas; with fragments by Rossini, Puccini, Donizetti, Verdi, Mascagni, with the integration of many solo accordion parts. Much of the music was arranged by Roberto Molinelli. The beautiful and spectacular Harbin Concert Hall with 1,400 seats was full and an enthusiastic audience enjoyed accordion, orchestra and opera singers, performing for more than one hour, many Italian operas most famous melodies. |

Accordionists from Accordion Pin Up Calendar Making Concerts - USAby Rob Howard |
Four Accordion Babes from the Accordion Pin-Up Calendar have been performing concerts in Southern California last week. At the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, accordionists Sansa Asylum, Shiri Goldsmith and Renée de la Prade wowed their audience with Yiddish swing with horns, clarinet, rhythm and accordion. Renée played in duo with “Rebel Lovers” who entertained with a mix of rock/zydeco/blues. The following evening “Rebel Lovers” (who are based in Hamburg, Germany) entertained at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad with a spicy blend of rock, blues, zydeco and soul music. “Rebel Lovers” (Renee de la Prade on accordion and Ingo Braeuning on drums) were joined by Ric Lashever (on guitar) with his laconic cowboy charm and bluesy original songs. |
Premiere of Accordion and Choral Work – New Zealandby Heather Masefield |
On June 13th accordionist Alanah Jones premiered a new commissioned work entitled “La Luna Blanca” by highly regarded New Zealand choral composer David Hamilton. This composition for free bass accordion and choir was premiered at the Auckland Town Hall as part of the Westlake Chorolation choir performance for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Big Sing event. Westlake Chorolation if one of the top New Zealand youth choirs and has travelled internationally including performing at the Vatican in Italy. Alanah Jones has worked with David Hamilton for several months, demonstrating accordion and its possibilities, and testing the sounds of accordion and choir to finalise the composition for performance. |

New Zealand Coupe Mondiale Contestants Perform, Whangarei – New Zealandby Heather Masefield |
On June 23rd, the four accordionists who will represent New Zealand at the Coupe Mondiale World competitions in Shenzhen, China this August, performed for an excited audience at the Whangarei Keyboard Club in Whangarei, Northland. Performers (picture above) are: Angela & Jessie Chen, Adam Perry, Catrina Lin. Following an excellent afternoon tea and food, multi world champion Grayson Masefield entertained the audience and completed the concert. |

Horsham Park Bandstand Concert Series – Englandby Christine Johnstone |
The Crawley Accordion Orchestra will entertain at the Horsham Park Bandstand, Horsham, West Sussex on June 30th at 2.30pm. This concert is part of the “Summer Sounds” concert series in Horsham Park, funded by the Horsham District Council Events Team. The event encourages families to take a picnic and enjoy the entertainment. The Gooikoorts International Music Festival will be held from July 5th to 7th and is at the crossroads of traditional and contemporary folk music. For twelve years, the organizers have been offering a high-quality event in a relaxed and family atmosphere, all set in the inviting setting of the green hills of Pajottenland. The concept has grown over the years and currently includes eleven concerts, including four purely acoustic, a massed concert, three balls, a large luthier market, initiations and a musical game island for the youngest. The headliners are internationally recognized artists with new talents added each year. The musical atmosphere continues regularly until the early hours with nightly jams. See Poster for details. |
Accordion at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival – USAby Christine Johnstone |
The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival will be held on 10 stages at the UAF campus and various venues around Fairbanks, AK 99709, USA from July 14th to 28th. Nearly 10,000 people come together at the Festival every July to study, perform and engage their spirit in an empowering way. Accordionist Jamie Maschler (picture below) will teach three workshops at the University Community Presbyterian Church in College Road, Fairbanks. These are: “Accordion for Kids”, “Accordion Workshop” and “Playing through tunes”. The workshops will include Learning about the accordion mechanics, theory that allows you to open up opportunities on the accordion, different bass accompaniment outside of our typical 3/4 and 4/4 patterns that will include chord combining techniques and some bellows tips. Jamie will also take a look at a few familiar accordion classics like Tico-Tico No Fuba and La Cumparsita and talk about how to play them as a solo or with other people. Beginners welcome. |

CNIMA directed by Nathalie Boucheix announce a new course entitled “The Pure Atmosphere Course” which will be held from 12th to 16th August, 2019. Throughout the five days, students will receive group and individual tuition on two pieces to play together. These pieces are: The Romance of Paris (Charles Trenet) and Tango Passion (Jacques Mornet). This course aims to provide a new way of progressing collectively, in a friendly atmosphere, and the spirit of mutual aid that prevails at CNIMA.
