XIX International Competition & Festival "Vivat, Bayan!", Samara - Russiaby Ivan Dyma, SaxAkkord Duo |
The XIX International Competition & Festival "Vivat, Bayan!" will be held in Samara from September 21st to 25th, 2021. The event will incorporate the 2nd Interregional Selection of the XVIII International Competition Sergey Voitenko, Deputy of the Samara Provincial Duma and Artistic Director of the competition. The jury includes Friedrich Lips (Chairman of Jury), Evgeniy Afanasyev, Boris Aron, A. Bolshakov, Aleksandr Gataullin, Vladimir Grachev, Sergey Kotkov, Aleksey Maslov, Mark Mayer, Kats Alla Mikhailovna, Vladimir Orlov, Ivan Ovchinnikov, Khmeleva Mariya Petrovna, Yuri Solaev, Andrey Statsenko, Pyotr Tkachenko, Alexander Selivanov, Pavel Ukhanov, Lyudmila Varavina, Sergey Voitenko and Alexander Yurov. Our semester is starting soon in September and right at the beginning, we have a very important concert by one of our teachers, Dr Mika Väyrynen. Because of the current Covid-19 restrictions, there will probably be hardly any live audience, but the concert will be streamed by the University of the Arts. A link to the online video will be added to the following website about one hour before the beginning of the concert: https://www.uniarts.fi/en/events/mika-vayrynen-of-life-and-death/ Mika Väyrynen will perform the solo recital at The Great Hall of The Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland on September 8th at 7pm Finnish time (UTC +3). This online concert entitled "Of Life and Death" is a musical journey of life from childhood to death. The concert program includes works by Volodymir Podgorny, Pjotr Tchaikowsky, Paavo Korpijaakko (Sonata No 2), and Nicolas Economou. The Concertino Accordion Band will perform a concert on the stage of the Palatului Republicii (Palace of the Republic) in Chisinau, Moldova on September 17th, 2021 at 7pm. The event is organised by the "Serghei Lunchevici" National Philharmonic in Moldova. 2021 CIA Video Archive and Education Project, Munich - Germanyby Harley Jones |
The Scandalli Accordion Factory is the sponsor of the 2022 Video Archive and Education Project. The "Video Archive Education Project" is a project initiated in 2010 by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) with assistance from sponsors and Accordions Worldwide. Videos should be online approximately 1 hour after the live performance or live competition and viewers will have free downloads of Coupe Mondiale competitions playing a vast range of different types and styles of music. The project includes a video of all the Coupe Mondiale categories and their contestants to be kept in the CIA archives in Finland, which over the coming years will become a wealth of historical recordings, including the premiere of many original accordion works and the emergence of upcoming artists at the Coupe Mondiale. We thank the Scandalli Accordion Factory for their sponsorship enabling this ambitious free project to assist accordion students and tutors throughout the world. |

Picture above: Performing on the recent accordion ship cruise in China. Guo Weixiang, born on January 2, 1955. Accordion National Class One Performer of Hunan Song and Dance Theatre, Honorary Director of Hunan Musicians Association, Honorary President of Hunan Accordion Professional Committee, Visiting Professor of Music College of Hunan Normal University, Visiting Professor of Hunan Women's College, Appraisal of Postgraduate Thesis Defense of Music College of Hunan Normal University Committee member. Read a previous article from 2015 where Prof Guo selected a school at Zhou Luo in a very poor area, very far out in the country (2 hours drive) from the city and started the accordion project in November 2014. Prof. Guo personally purchased 20 new accordions, music, stands so that 20 selected children could learn. Prof. Guo also assisted to get a full time teacher of accordion so that they can have practise every noon. Once a week, Prof. Guo would drive at his cost, for 2 hours each way to give these children free lessons. The 2021 Australian International Accordion Championship attracted more than 169 entries from 17 different countries in the largest event ever held by the Australian Accordion Teachers Association (AATA). Due to the ongoing lockdown in Sydney, Australia, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s competition was held fully online, but this did not prevent some of Australia’s finest young players from taking the opportunity to compete at an international level. Registrations are now open for the International Digital Electronic Accordion Society (IDEAS) 2021 Symposium 4.0, which will be held online (due to Covid-19) from October 29th to November 7th. The quality and scope of this year’s symposium promises to be every bit as engaging and educational as the 2020 virtual symposium. All concerts and workshops will be recorded and archived so that the entirety of the Symposium will be available throughout the year for continued learning and reference. The 2020 IDEAS Symposium produced 103 hours of recorded video, all available online at any time for symposium attendees to reference whenever they choose to. Certificate Course: The Accordion in Jazz and Pop with Eric Dann and Matthias Matzke - Germanyby Christine Johnstone |
Eric Dann and Matthias Matzke (pictured above) will tutor a course introducing jazz, rock/pop and world music with its international facets and backgrounds, typical patterns and stylistic peculiarities at the Hohner Conservatory in Trossingen, Germany (picture left). The course will begin with an orientation phase on November 20th and 21st, 2021 and is aimed at all accordionists, both with a classical or popular music background, who want to immerse themselves in the world of popular styles, apply them safely and also pass them on. A special focus will be on free play and improvisation as well as the interplay in combo, ensemble or orchestra. The deadline for registrations is October 15th, 2021. Video: Vow Accordion Band at Garvagh Cancer Research Parade 2021. The Vow Accordion Band (picture left) has taken part in 2021 annual Cancer research parades in Northern Ireland following the cancellation of the 2020 events due to Covid-19. On July 24th, they marched at the Garvagh Cancer Research Parade 2021 organised by the Garvagh District No4 Cancer Research Committee. Garvagh is a village in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Other accordion bands in this parade were Blackhill Accordion Band, Lisnargot Accordion Band, Eden Accordion Band, Dunloy Accordion Band and Killymuck Accordion Band. On August 7th, over 37 bands marched in the Ballymoney Cancer Research Band Parade in Ballymoney, a small town and civil parish in County Antrim. Accordion bands included Craiganee Accordion Band, Vow Accordion Band, Milltown Accordion Band, Dunaghy Accordion, Dunloy Accordion Band, Killycoogan Independent Accordion Band, Bushside Accordion Band, William Beattie Memorial Accordion Band, Killyless Accordion Band, Eden Accordion Band, Killycoogan Accordion Band, Mosside Accordion Band and Lisnagrot Accordion Band. A variety of bands will march again on August 28th at the Ballymoney Royal Black District Chapter No5 parade in Ballymoney. See poster below for details. |

Closing Date Extended for Black Pencil Prize – Netherlandsby Christine Johnstone |
The closing date for the 2021 edition of the Black Pencil Prize has been extended to September 1st, 2021. Results will be announced between December 1st and 5th, 2021 in Orgelpark Amsterdam during the “Prix Annelie de Man” which features concerts and the composers competition. Submissions have been received from 18 countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, UK and USA. The Black Pencil Prize will be awarded to a new composition written for the instrumentation of the Ensemble Black Pencil: recorder, panflute, viola, accordion and percussion. The use of amplification, (live) electronics, video and/or theatrical elements is allowed. Composers of all ages and nationalities are invited to participate. The duration should not exceed 10 minutes and there is no application fee. The competition jury consists of all members of the Ensemble Black Pencil, Jorge Isaac (blockflutes & Artistic Director), Matthijs Koene (panflute), Esra Pehlivanli (viola), Marko Kassl (accordion) and Enric Monfort (percussion). The Gordon Musical Education Centre held an open air concert at the Park Jana Pawla II Papieza Pielgrzyma (Pope John Paul II Pilgrim Park) in Lomza, Podlaskie, Poland on August 22nd, 2021. The successful event was held for parents and children up to 6 years of age, who were given the opportunity to sing, dance and have fun with music. The music played was a variety of popular pieces, interspersed with songs from the Bobobit album and Kurpie traditional music. During such musical meetings, toddlers get to know the world of sounds, their native language, develop intellectually, emotionally and socially through music, movement and contact with their peers. |

The 2021 Faroe Islands Accordion Festival will be held at the Culture House in Fuglafjordur from August 27th to 29th, 2021. The festival will feature Gary Blair (Scotland - picture left) as well as local groups and soloists. In addition to the concerts, there will be a dance Saturday night with Norrøna Dansiband, an accordion sailing trip with Dragin (see picture below) and much more. Two Upcoming Marco Lo Russo Performances - Italyby Rob Howard |
Marco Lo Russo will join actor Giuseppe Pestillo to perform during the complete reading of Dante’s “Inferno” (700 years after his death) on August 28th, starting at 6pm in the village of Lenola, Latina. The event is organised by the Ars di Fondi Association and is promoted by the Ausoni Park Authority. “For the occasion, the musical repertoire, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary, will accompany the audience on an emotional journey from a hopeless entrance to a finale full of dreams and desires.” Lo Russo’s next performance will be a solo recital at the Convent of Santa Maria ad Nives in Palazzola, Rocca di Papa, Rome on September 4th at 7pm. This concert is part of the 2021 Season of I Concerti dell’Accademia degli Sfaccendati and organized by Coop Art, one of the oldest cultural cooperatives in Rome. Gypsy Jazz group Pearl Django (which includes accordionist David Lange) will entertain with two shows at the Jansen Art Centre in Lynden, Washington on September 11th, 2021. Their first show will be held at 3pm and they will be joined by vibraphonist, Susan Pascal for their 7.30pm show. The following day (September 12th), the band will perform at the Marysville Opera House in Marysville, Washington at 5.30pm. The group enjoy performing music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, its extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions.
