New Bugari Evo Haria P41 and Evo Haria B55 Announced - Italy

Two new models will be premiered at this year's Frankfurt Musikmesse, 7th to 10th April 2016 at Booth 9.0 E81.

This collaboration between Roland and an accordion manufacturer is a first. Sean Montgomery, Roland Europe Group Accordion Product Manager writes that:
"The official relationship between Bugari and Roland is:
- We have licensed our V Accordion technology to Bugari s.r.l.;
- A ‘Powered by Roland’ logo will feature on each model.
- This collaboration with Bugari, one of the world’s leading acoustic accordion makers, to license Roland technology and brand will attract acoustic players enabling us to promote the Roland V-Accordion brand and technology to a much wider audience."

Marco Cinaglia further wrote: "I think that the accordion world is very interested in this 'magic fusion' of tradition with technological innovation. I'm sure that this new step will set another important milestone in the history of the digital accordion!"

NAO UK Championships 2016, 22nd – 24th April, Liverpool - UK

NAO UK 2016 posterThe NAO UK Championships 2016 is to be held again at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool from 22nd to 24th April.

NAO Chairperson Raymond Bodell, "is pleased that the NAO UK Championships has attracted more than 200 entries for solo, duo, ensemble and orchestra categories, from across the United Kingdom including Northern Ireland, Scotland and England.

This year, we are pleased to welcome a good number of instrumental and Music Trade exhibitions, plus the festival will incorporate the UK Qualifying sections for the CIA Coupe Mondiale 2016 to be held in Rostov-on-Don, Russia in September, the NAO Composers’ Competition, an International Masterclass as well as the diverse Solo, Duo and Ensembles categories which go to make up this renowned UK competition.

Saturday will also feature the traditional Scottish Celidh and Annual General Meeting of the Organisation. International guests include Frederic Deschamps (Masterclass and Jury) from France and Mirco Patarini (Jury) and Antonio Spaccarotella (Jury) both from Italy."

Francesco Visentin (1949 - 2016) Treviso - Italy

Eugenia Cherkasova & Francesco VisentinFrancesco Visentin died on the night of 22nd March 2016 from a heart attack, only 66 years. Picture left with his wife Eugenia Cherkasova in 2015.

You can not think about the history and the achievements of Italian accordion without recognizing the merits of some great characters who have devoted their lives to the musical development of the accordion.

Outstanding among them, without a doubt, is Maestro Francesco Visentin, deep and passionate supporter of accordion, acclaimed teacher and editor of Physa Editions.

The XXV Grande Gala Internacional do Acordeão – the Silver Jubilee year for this festival - takes place from April 14th to 25th at several locations in the Algarve and Alentejo, Portugal. The organiser is Francisco Saboia.

On April 14th there will be the official launch of the Centenary Book ‘Acordeão no Algarve’.

This year’s festival features international guests Eric Bouvelle (France), Julien Gonzales (France), Petar Maric (Serbia), and Pietro Adragna (Italy), and national guests Francisco Saboia, Jorge Alves, Rodrigo Maurício, Lígia Cipriano, Adélia Botelho, and Francisco Monteiro.

Dúo Nuevo Mundo Concert, Tolu - Colombia

Dúo Nuevo MundoThe Dúo Nuevo Mundo of Colombia - Francisco Javier Rivera on clarinet and Lácides Romero on acordion – performed a concert on Tuesday evening March 22nd in the Cathedral Church of the City of Tolu on the north coast of Colombia with works by Dvorak, Ernesto Nazareth, Luis A Calvo, Contradanzas Cubanas, and Carlos Vieco.

This concert was organized by the Bank of the Republic of Colombia and is the first of a series of 10 concerts in the main cities of Colombia.

Video of performance, 3rd January 2016 in Sofia Church, Stockholm of the Vivaldi Bassoon Concerto in E minor, FV484 performed by Arthur Edman (bassoon) & Leo Florin (accordion). Despite his young 12 years, Leo Florin has performed at many competitions and concerts internationally. He is studying at the music school Lilla Academy in Stockholm, teacher Valeri Kolyganov.

Arthur Edman, also 12 years (bassoon) is studying at the School of Music Junior Academy in Stockholm, bassoon teacher Staffan Eriksson.

14 Years Ago: Concert to Honour Sir Charles Wheatstone – USA

Allan AtlasSir Charles WheatstoneThe Accordions Worldwide News for March 22nd 2002 included a report about a concert in the USA honouring Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-75), inventor of the English concertina – sister instrument of the accordion.

It is interesting to note that Wheatstone patented the first concertina in London on June 6th 1829, just one month after Cyrillius Demien patented the accordion in Vienna.

Wheatstone was actually one of the great inventors of the 19th Century, with many scientific inventions to his credit, including the Wheatstone Bridge.

Concert to Honour Sir Charles Wheatstone – USA

A concert to honour Sir Charles Wheatstone entitled ‘The Incredible Concertina’ will be held at the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall in New York City on April 12th organized by the Center for the Study of Free-Reed Instruments. Guest performers include concertina players Allan Atlas (picture left), David Cornell, Jody Kruskal, Tom Kruskal, Séan Minnie (South Africa), Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin, Wim Wakker, and Stephaan van Zyl.

Richard Galliano ‘Tribute to Edith Piaf’ Concert, Vilnius - Lithuania

On Monday March 28th, 7pm, accordionist Richard Galliano and guitarist Sylvain Luc, both from France, perform a ‘Tribute to Edith Piaf’ concert at the Kongresu rumai, Vilniaus gatve, LT-01102 Vilnius, Lithuania.

Richard Galliano (born 1950) is one of France’s leading accordionists. After winning the CMA Trophee Mondiale World Championship in 1967, Galliano became an internationally celebrated concert accordionist, teacher, prolific composer and recording artist.

Sylvain Luc, best known as a highly accomplished jazz guitarist, played bass with Richard Galliano’s trio in the 1980s and 1990s. His brother is the accordionist Gérard Luc.

Édith Piaf (1915 – 1963) was a legendary French cabaret singer, songwriter and actress who became widely regarded as France's national chanteuse, as well as being one of France's greatest international stars.

An Afternoon of Dancing, Messey-sur-Grosne – France

PosterOn Monday March 28th, 3pm, at Auberge du Moulin de La Chapelle, 71390 Messey-sur-Grosne, there will be dancing to two orchestras, led respectively by accordionists Daniel Roger and Jean-Pierre Jourdier. Entrance is 8 Euro.

Messey-sur-Grosne is a commune in the Saône-et-Loire department in the region of Bourgogne in eastern France.

Duo Bayanello perform works by de Falla and Gubaidulina, London - UK

Duo BayanelloOn Wednesday March 30th, 1.10pm, the Duo Bayanello consisting of: Iosif Purits (accordion) and Cecilia Bignall (cello), perform works by de Falla and Gubaidulina at St James' Church, London W1J 9LL. Free admission, no ticket required.

The program includes:
- ‘Suite populaire espagnole’ composed by Manuel de Falla, arranged for cello and piano by Maurice Maréchal;
- ‘In Croce' for cello and bayan composed by Sofia Gubaidulina;
- ‘Le Grand Tango’ - Astor Piazzolla.

Both are studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and Iosif Purits an have performed in many countries, both in solo and chamber music projects. Cecilia won the Ian Alexander Scholarship to the Royal Academy to study with Robert Cohen, and was awarded the Montefiore Prize. She has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Colston Hall, the Norfolk and Norwhich Festival and the Aurora Festival in Sweden, among others.

Iosif is a prize-winner at 30 International competitions. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, George Weston Recital Hall, Nybrokajen Concert Hall, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and UNESCO among others. In 2013 Iosif won the ABRSM International Postgraduate Award, bringing him to London for his post-graduate studies at the Royal Academy.

The trio Kosmos concert perform concerts next month, as follows:

Saturday April 23rd, 7.30pm - ‘Music at Duffield’, Main Hall, Ecclesbourne School, Duffield, Derbyshire, DE56 4GS

Kosmos Ensemble is re-defining classical and world music. Sophisticated jazz glides magically into wild Gypsy fiddling, emotive Jewish music into hot-blooded tango, Arabic and Turkish improvisation into Greek melodies. As described by Richard Morrison, chief music critic of The Times: “telepathic rapport, dazzling virtuosity, serious scholarship, intellectual curiosity and impeccable musicianship. I defy you not to be mesmerised.” Making extensive use of their own arrangements, alongside vibrant new compositions, entrancing dance rhythms, soulful improvisation and passion delivered with panache and virtuoso technique.

Kosmos are Harriet Mackenzie – violin, Meg Hamilton – Viola, and Miloš Milivojevic – accordion. Serbian born Miloš Milivojevic is a first prize winner at international competitions in Germany, France, Italy and Denmark. In Serbia he studied with Vojin Vasovic, and with Owen Murray at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he graduated and was awarded with Dip RAM. In 2007 he became the first accordionist ever to win the RAM Club Prize at the Academy and in the 2008 was the Winner of the prestigious Derek Butler London Prize at the Wigmore Hall, London.

Andrea and Djorde Gajic Concert, Glasgow – UK

concert posterOn Saturday April 2nd, 1pm, Andrea Gajic – violin and Djordje Gajic – accordion perform a classical concert at the church Renfield St Stephen’s, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow G2 4JP, Scotland.

Djordje Gajic, from Serbia, has won many international competitions, amongst them the CMA Trophee Mondiale in 1988 and the Grand Prix, France in 1987. He has performed with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Orchestra, as well as many solo recitals throughout Europe. Now based in Scotland, he has given solo recitals in London, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Blackpool, and Birmingham. He also performed at international music festivals in Dartington, Norwich, Salisbury and Birmingham.

Djordje Gajic is an Accordion Professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and St Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh.

Julien Labro Concerts at Princeton University, New Jersey – USA

Julien LabroAccordion virtuoso Julien Labro is makes his Princeton University debut with two concerts on Thursday, April 14th, at 6pm and 9pm. He will be playing the accordion, bandoneon, and also the accordina.

With listeners seated in-the-round on the stage of Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall for a program entitled ‘The Big Squeeze’, Labro will introduce the instruments and his program directly to the audience.

Music by:
Bernhard Molique, Astor Piazzolla, Isaac Albéniz, Gabriel Fauré, Fernando Otero and the performer himself at 6 pm;

jazz works at 9 pm.

Accompanied by pianist Gregg Kallor at both programs, Labro will also be joined by bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Richie Barshay for the 9 pm jazz concert.

Ticket prices for this series are $25 for adults and $10 for students. Buy both concerts and save 20%.

French-born Julien Labro graduated from the Marseille Conservatory, then began winning international awards, taking 1st prize in the CIA Coupe Mondiale in 1996 and the Castelfidardo International Festival in 1997.

After sweeping other international competitions, Labro moved to the USA some years ago, where he has further pursued his musical career.

Roman Jbanov Concert, Basse-Terre - Guadeloupe

The concert also involves the string ensemble ‘Les Cordes Joyeuses’, led by violinist Roger Joseph.

Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory, is an island group in the southern Caribbean Sea.

John Bonica writes: "Chapter 17 has been prompted by several accordionists who have called or written me requesting advice about exercises to increase endurance or strengthen shoulders and arms following injury or debility because of a long lay-off in playing."

The chapter also contains important information should you feel pain while playing the accordion.

Chapter 18 is about "An Anatomical Discussion of the Correct Wrist, Elbow,
and Shoulder Position for the Treble Keyboard"
