Festival Director Raimo Vertainen reports that over 5,100 people from children to elders attended the 38 concerts that were part of the 19th annual Kokkola Accordion Festival.

The varied program included premiere performances and a generous helping of Finnish music, a Mannerheim evening and musical ambassadors from abroad. This festival shows the extraordinary versatility of the accordion as a musical instrument in a classical, modern, light music, and even beat-box context. The program also included dance, community singing and outdoor events.

To celebrate the 20th Kokkola Winter Accordion Festival, 10 to 18 February 2018, the event will also include the CIA Winter Congress. Picture below: Congress venue viewed by CIA officials last week.

Jeon Yoo-jeong Solo Classic Accordion Performance - South Korea

Jeon Yoo-jeongTwo days ago, the Dong-A Ilbo News featured "classic accordion" player Jeon Yoo-jeong and her solo classic accordion performance in Keumho Art Hall in central Seoul.

Jeon was going to learn to play the accordion for one year in her first year of high school in Russia but she had second thoughts after her first class.

From there, Jeon made a five-year plan for her accordion development and showed it to her parents. Jeon set a goal to win a prize in domestic competition in her first year, and to go on to holding a solo concert, winning international competitions and performing with an orchestra.

"I practiced 16 hours a day." Eleven months later, Jeon won the second place in the Lanciano International Accordion Competition in Italy. The next year she held a solo performance, and won No. 1 ranking in 2010 Clava and 2011 Val Tidone (Italy) competitions.

By 2011 and playing with an orchestra "I had achieved my goals in four years," she said. "When I was playing with the orchestra, a Russian professor liked it and I was able to transfer to the Russian Gnesins Academy of Music."

Asked about her future plans since she has returned to South Korea, Jeon said, "I want to promote activities in Korea and break the bias on classic accordions here."

Alex Meixner featured on 'The Polka King' Jack Black movie soundtrack, New York - USA

Alex MeixnerAccordionist Alex Meixner has worked on the soundtrack for the movie, ‘The Polka King’, starring Jack Black. Billed as a tragicomedy, the film debuted on January 22nd at the Sundance Film Festival to good reviews and is scheduled for wide release later this year.

Meixner spent two days last summer working with actor Jack Black, who plays the lead role in the true story of Jan Lewan, a polka-playing musician turned ponzi scheme felon. The pair met and worked together at New York’s historic Avatar Studios, which has hosted dozens of rock ’n’ roll icons from David Bowie to Bruno Mars.

“Those two days are a personal and professional highlight,” Meixner said. Every time you see and hear Black play the accordion on screen, you'll be listening to Meixner’s music. Meixner said Black was exactly as he seems onscreen. He is a little disheveled, very funny, hardworking and caring.

On a lunch break, Meixner, actor Jason Schwartzman, who co-stars in the film, and Black took a quick Uber ride to a Manhattan pizzeria. Black insisted on tipping the driver $100 and then playfully engaged with fans at the restaurant. “He was totally gracious, totally cool,” Meixner said.

Rod Stradling ‘Playing for Playford’ Workshop, Welwyn Garden City – UK

Rod StradlingRod Stradling leads an accordion workshop – ‘Playing for Playford’ - on Sunday February 26th, 10.30am until 3.30pm, at the Backhouse Room, 116 Handside Lane, Welwyn Garden City, Herefordshire AL8 6SZ. The workshop is organized by the Herefordshire Folk Association.

Unfortunately there are no eating facilities nearby, so please bring a packed lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided during the day. Cost: £40

Rod Stradling is a highly experienced accordionist, band leader, tutor, and workshop leader. Rod comments: “The Playford publishing dynasty lasted from the middle of the 17th Century into the early 18th Century. Borrowing from composers of the day such as Purcell, they left us with a large catalogue of music and we will be trying some of the tunes, not just to hear how they sound, but to examine how well they reflect the dances. At the time there was no instrument like an accordion so we will review how the character of our instrument affects the music. The tunes will range from some that are familiar today to some you may never have heard, and from tunes in familiar keys and time signatures to a couple of more challenging titles. As our knowledge of Playford’s work has expanded over the recent decades, the dancing masters of today have written new dances and tunes in the Playford style. We will try some of these as well.”
