Richard Galliano ‘Tribute to Nino Rota’ CD, Paris - France

Richard Galliano Nino Rota CD coverFor his second album on the prestigious classical label Deutsche Grammophon (released on October 17th 2011, Universal Music distribution), Richard Galliano pays homage to the music of Nino Rota (1911-79), whose centenary is celebrated this year.

The music is mainly themes of the movie ‘La Strada’, but there are  other beautiful soundtracks composed for Federico Fellini. The CD opens with a surprise: on one of the ‘Godfather’ themes from Francis Ford Coppola, Richard Galliano forgoes the  accordion to play the trombone!

Nino Rota is probably the most acclaimed Italian musician of modern times having won many Oscars, Grammies, and other Golden Globe awards.

The very famous Richard Galliano, a French native with an Italian name and parentage, will surely conquer the public all over the world with this new genuine adaptation of rich musical masterpieces.

Ksenija Sidorova and Stefan Ćirić Recital, London - UK

A concert in featuring the accordion/piano duo Ksenija Sidorova and Stefan Ciric in The Friends of Blackheath Halls series at the Recital Room on October 10th was reviewed by Peter Grahame Woolf, founder editor of the web music magazine ‘Seen & Heard’:-

A marvelous experience for Blackheath's lunch-time audience, numbering a healthy 40 or so who risked "an accordion recital", which is still far from mainstream.

I have heard and reviewed Ksenija some four times and enthused about her debut CD. Hers is the most visual of instruments and watching her play is riveting, and Blackheath's small Recital Room proved an ideal venue. This lunchtime recital with her partner Stefan Ciric was possibly the best experience of all, and the one with greatest potential significance.

Strange to tell, the accordion/piano duo is a rarity, possibly unique, but its potential is unlimited. I had been a devotee of the accordion and collector of accordion recordings since the days of the Danish pioneer Mogens Ellegard, but had never heard accordion with piano...What looked to be a demanding programme for listeners proved not so. Two novelties, by the Russian Tatiana Sergeyeva and the Finn Heikki Valpola, who has composed numerous works for accordion. Cesar Franck's ‘Prelude, Fugue et Variation Op 16’. Finally Piazzolla's ‘Four Seasons’, long "After Vivaldi" and a happy conclusion, with Piazzolla's ‘Oblivion’ for the encore insisted upon by the enthusiastic audience.

Antique Accordion in New Movie at Shepperton Studios, Bucks – UK

An antique Russian-made button accordion owned by Scottish-based collector Caroline Hunt, dated about 1890, has been loaned to Shepperton Studios for its film star role in the forthcoming film 'Anna Karenina' with Jude Law and Kiera Knightley.

Caroline says, “After a lot of restoration (it was in many bits) thanks to John Crawford and a kind local joiner who made a replacement fretwork grill and a lot of polish on the brass fittings, it is now looking pretty good”.

'Anna Karenina', to be filmed in the UK and Russia, will be released in 2012.

Caroline Hunt has a large collection of old accordions, some of which are on public display at Bogbain Farm, Inverness IV2 5BD, Scotland.

‏‘14 Years Ago’ – Charles Wheatstone (1802-75)

The Accordions Worldwide news for October 17th 1997 included details of events being planned to celebrate the bi-centenary of the birth of Charles Wheatstone (1802-75), inventor of the English concertina. Wheatstone’s first design, patented in London on June 19th 1829, and called a ‘symphonium’, was operated by air blown in by a pipe from the mouth.

The name ‘concertina’ was adopted in 1835, when bellows were added, replacing the pipe. Wheatstone patented the English concertina design that we know today in 1844. The concertina was easily the most popular free reed instrument in Great Britain throughout the 19th Century, eventually displaced by the accordion in the late 1920s.

The Wheatstone Company is still in existence, and Wheatstone concertinas remain to this day the benchmark of quality by which all others are compared.
