Pictures: 1. Andrew & Lisa-Lee; 2. Harry Hussey; 3. Rob Howard; 4. Robin Johnston; 5. Sammie & Robin duet; 6. Night music in the bar. The 2024 Accordion Week at the St Audries Bay holiday centre in Somerset, England, took place from July 5th to 12th, organised by Sammie Peckover-Mitchell and Lisa-Lee Leslie. There were accordion orchestra workshops morning and afternoon each day and concerts every evening, featuring volunteer players and teachers. The teachers this year were Sammie Peckover-Mitchell (MD Mixed Ability Orchestra), Lisa-Lee Leslie (MD Vintage Accordion Orchestra), Caroline Hussey (MD Beginners Orchestra), Andrew Purkiss (MD Higher Intermediate Orchestra) and Robin Johnston-Hyland (MD Scottish Orchestra). The event included some master classes, private lessons from the teachers, a ceilidh on the Wednesday evening, and a grand finale concert featuring all of the workshop orchestras on the Thursday evening. Andrew Purkiss and Robin Johnston-Hyland plus Matt Fisher on drums played for the ceilidh, and Lisa Pukiss called the dances. The Accordion Week does not have any booked guest accordionists, though the ever popular 94 year old jazz accordionist Harry Hussey (an ever present at these events), performed throughout the week, including evenings in the bar. The annual Accordion Week at St Audries Bay began in 1988, and was originally organized by the late Malcolm Gee. It had a large and loyal following until the Covid pandemic of 2020 closed the event down. In 2023 it was revived, and it is now re-building its support. London-based accordionist Neil Sanders, who has attended every event since 1988, has written an article about the history of the St Audries Bay Accordion Week, which can be sent to anyone on request. ![]() Eric was involved with the annual New Zealand Accordion Association competitions and festival since its inception in 1971. Eric designed and organised the judge’s microphones and “on stage board” when judges listened to competitors from another room. This was so the audience knew which competitor was performing. (Nowadays all competition classes are sight judged). Many of Eric’s family have been involved with the accordion movement in New Zealand as follows: • Daughter Christine Johnstone : teacher, orchestra conductor, Treasurer of the North Shore Accordion Orchestras (NSAO), playing member of the NSAO, Accordions Worldwide News Editor and Life Member of the New Zealand Accordion Association. • Grandson Mark Jeffries: past member of the North Shore Accordiana Orchestra. • Granddaughter Renee Jeffries: past member of the Auckland Accordion Symphonetta, assistant tutor of the North Shore Music Makers Accordion Orchestra and New Zealand Accordion Association Competitions Secretary. • Grandson Shane Adams: past member of the North Shore Accordion Orchestra • Two great granddaughters and four great grandsons have also been members of the North Shore Accordion Orchestras. A ceremony for family and friends to bury Eric's ashes along with his late wife, Dorothy has just been held. May they rest in peace. |

![]() ![]() Regarding the first four on this list, I have had the pleasure of giving brief descriptive and historical presentations and performances of each during Dr. William Schimmel’s excellent and excitingly diverse three-day online seminars for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The final one of these five pieces, Serebrier’s Danza Ritual, will be my contribution to the series during this summer’s production at, as always, the last weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) of July. In addition I have composed two little suites, entitled Tidbits 1 and Tidbits 2, for the intermediate level student and performed them for the Seminars as a supplement to my presentations. I will be happy to send free copies of these scores to anyone who might be interested in playing them. See Dr. Schimmel’s announcement and description of this year’s wonderful and, as always, multi-varied Seminar program: https://www.accordionusa.com/#art5592 |
