Results: Sata-Häme Soi Festival Competition - Finlandby Kimmo Mattila President, Finnish Accordion Association |
The Sata-Häme Soi Festival and competition was held in the first week of July in Ikaalinen, Finland. The festival included the final of the Golden and Silver Accordion competitions, which was shown live on Alfa-TV. The live 2 hour TV program was watched by 0,5 million people, which is a really huge audience in Finland with a population of 5.5 million people. Final historical result = two winners Sonja Lampinen and Vilma Wiren picture above back. The silver accordion winner is Annabel Heikola picture above front. The jury was led by Raimo Vertainen (CIA Music Committee member) and the live TV show was hosted by Kimmo Mattila and Lola Odusoga, past Miss Finland. The Sata-Häme Soi Festival will continue in Ikaalinen in August 13-15, when we organise several events on the park stage and concerts in the church and Oma Tupa house. |

2021 Summerschool Symposium and Music Day - Netherlandsby Christine Johnstone |
The 2021 Summerschool Symposium and Music Day will be held on July 31st and August 1st, 2021 in Borculo, Gelderland, Netherlands, organised by the Foundation for National Project-based Accordion Education There will also be an option to participate online. The symposium theme “Healthy music & studying” on July 31st is for musical occupational therapy, music teachers and eager musicians and will include: Edu room - A substantive programme that focuses on the development of a healthy and effective working method as a musician Farm hall - A practical musical program in which one specific topic is central to every workshop of one hour. DoeTent - A half-hour energizer that also provides an educational learning experience The Music Day on 1st August is a socially oriented musical day, which will include a group play-in with “The show must go on” (Queen) & Air (J.S. Bach). Ellen Zijm (picture top left), will work with experienced players on Kunst der Fugue [J.S. Bach] to experience details, sound quality and musical depth as an ensemble. Annemarieke van der Ploeg (picture top middle with glasses), Lieke op ’t Roodt (picture top 2nd from right) and Ilse Kok (picture top right) will work with players of all levels with world music. Øivind Farmen New CD "My Classical Accordion" - Norwayby Harley Jones |
Øivind Farmen has through the last 30 years been one of the leading Norwegian accordionists with great international acclaim. Eleven years have passed since his last solo album. He felt the time is now right to pick a personal selection of works from his present repertoire which has become the album “My Classical Accordion”. The repertoire consists of music Øivind Farmen loves performing and for various reasons feels a strong sense of personal bonding with. Most of the works are premiere recordings for the accordion, and some of the music are world premiere recordings. The music spans from the Baroque period through the Classical period to composers of our time. Album available online. |

Accordionist Tracey Collins will join the cast of popular “Operatunity” (professional opera singers) for their July and August tour of New Zealand entitled “Luck of the Irish”. Some New Zealand Accordion Association committee members attempted to buy tickets for the Orewa concert, Auckland, only to find that performance was already sold out! Operatunity’s tour will visit 26 venues nationwide from July 9th to August 13th, 2021, and will include “breath-taking ballads, jigs and jollity, you'll have Ireland in your heart to be sure, to be sure!” This show features jolly jigs like “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” and “If You’re Irish Come to the Parlour”, haunting ballads like “Danny Boy” and “Carrickfergus”, as well as nostalgic favourites like “A Little Bit of Heaven” and “How are Things in Glocca Morra?” Tickets are selling fast with some venues booked out. A concert entitled “Music Without Borders” will be held at the beautiful Roman Catholic Cathedral in Moscow, on August 13th, 2021 at 9pm. Performers include Arseniy Strokovskiy (accordion) and Ivan Dyma (saxophone) members of the SaxAkkord Duo who will be joined by Michiru Soeda (violin) and Igor Goldenberg (organ). As Covid-19 has challenged the freedom of movement internationally as well as the ability to hear musicians from other countries live, this concert unites musicians from three countries - Russia, Japan and Germany. Their program will include works by A. Vivaldi, L. Marchand, J. S. Bach, A. Schnittke, L. Boelman, I. Stravinsky, J. S. Schnittke, J. S. Scott, J. S. Scott, J. S. Schnittke, J. S. The 32nd Haapavesi Folk Music Festival took place in Haapavesi, Finland from July 1st to 3rd, 2021. The festival offers music from different cultures all over the world, especially Scandinavian, Celtic and North American music. Accordionists Jamie Maschler and Gabe Hall-Rodrigues (picture right) will give accordion workshops at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Fairbanks, Alaska from July 26th to 30th, 2021. Accordion Courses as follows: • “Accordion For Kids” - Open to kids aged from 5 to 12. Come try out an accordion! This workshop will give a demonstration of how the accordion works, including a look at the inside and a chance to see and touch all the parts, along with the opportunity for your child to play one. Instruments will be provided and private lessons will be available during the week. • “Accordion - Playing through Tunes” Ages 18+ We will walk through a variety of different styles featuring accordion i.e. Latin, Norwegian, and French and talk about a few tips and tricks to play more authentically and relaxed. There will be written arrangements for two or more accordions. We will have the opportunity to share these at the final concert series. Beginners welcome. • “Accordion Workshop” Ages 18+ Jump deeper into accordion. Learn about the accordion mechanics, and some theory that allows you to open up opportunities on the accordion. Different bass accompaniment outside of our typical 3/4 and 4/4 patterns. This will include chord combining techniques and some bellows tips. Must be able to read music. The 2021 Sidmouth Folk Festival will be held from July 30th to August 6th as an open air event in the Blackmore Gardens in Sidmouth, Devon, England. The event will feature all day entertainment, street theatre, stalls, food court and evening concerts. Entertainers include Granny’s Attic (Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (melodeon), Scottish trio Talisk (which includes concertina player Mohsen Amini - picture below) and Saul Rose (melodeon - picture left). John Kirkpatrick will conduct a Concert Band Workshop online from Monday to Friday between 9.30 and 11.00 am. Music will be available via the festival website. Joseph Natoli will present a two-day online workshop on “Music Composition” and a special online concert, organised by Not Just Oompah! (NJO). The Zoom Workshops are scheduled for: August 23rd and 24th from 7pm to 9.30pm PM Central Time each night. These workshops will focus on Composing Music and will include: Critical Elements in Composition & Arranging, Alternative Stradella Chord Voicings with examples, Using Accordion Registers Effectively (How to Orchestrate Possibilities Beyond That Master Switch), and How to Play Musically which is more than just notes to consider. The Zoom Concert will be held on August 22nd from 3pm to 4pm Central Time and feature a variety of music from Joe’s creative collection. This concert is free to those taking part in the workshop. Registrations are now open for the “Free Reeds Unlimited” workshop, held at the Hohner Conservatory in Trossingen, Germany from October 1st to 3rd, 2021. Tutors Konstantin Reinfeld and Frank Haunschild (picture right) will focus on improvisation and harmony interplay and accompaniment. The weekend will begin with a lecturers' concert on October 1st, followed by workshops and clinics on October 2nd. On Saturday evening, both lecturers will coach an open session with course participants before Reeds-Unlimited ends on Sunday morning with further workshops and an internal final presentation around noon.
