Italian Accordion Factories are Back at Work - Italy

accordionIn early March, the Italian Government ordered a virtual lockdown across much of its wealthy north, including the financial capital Milan. This attempt to contain the coronavirus failed and on the 22 March, Italy closed all nonessential factories and businesses nationwide, to halt spread of coronavirus.

After so many deaths and the economy being ravaged by the coronavirus, Italy now moves cautiously towards reopening the economy. The Italian accordion factories have returned to work this week and accordion production is back underway.

Accordions Worldwide (AWW) provides free services each year from all our sites without any charge to our millions of viewers worldwide. The costs of AWW are covered by our accordion advertisers and some sales from the MusicForAccordion.com site.

AWW asks you to please support the accordion factories that advertise on our sites and make free services possible to the world. In these difficult economic times, your support can help the recovery.

‘Lock Down’ VE Day Party, Stockport – UK

Rob HowardMay 8th 1945 was the day Germany surrendered and World War II in Europe came to an end. This year marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day, which was to include all sorts of special events such as street parties, similar to the ones held in 1945.

However, although the Covid19 emergency put paid to the planned major public celebrations on Thursday May 8th 2020, many street parties went ahead, albeit observing social distancing. Some of these parties involved accordionists, such as the one held on Avondale Road, Stockport.

Accordionist Rob Howard writes: Yesterday afternoon it was lockdown VE Day party time on Avondale Rd, and I did my best to liven things up on my 1935 Scandalli Scott Wood Four curved keyboard. I came out at 4 pm and there was hardly anybody outside, but when I opened up with God Save the Queen, within minutes, lots of people emerged from their houses with tables, chairs, drinks and food, and we very quickly had a party going on. Observing social distancing, there was much chat and laughter, and I did my bit playing non-stop music.

I played war songs such as Wish Me Luck, Bless Em All, Lilli Marlene, Hang Out Your Washing on the Siegfried Line, Quartermasters Stores, Lambeth Walk, Run Rabbit Run, The Great Escape, The Longest Day, Colonel Bogey, Tipperary, Pack Up Your Troubles, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, White Cliffs of Dover, We'll Meet Again, plus some requests. I also played a medley of Glenn Miller music: Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Little Brown Jug, I Know Why, Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree and In The Mood.

These all sounded good on the curved keyboard, which has plenty of volume and is well suited to playing in the open air. By way of contrast I also donned my modern accordion to play Spanish Eyes, The Entertainer, the tango El Choclo, Come Back to Sorrento, Santa Lucia, Funiculi Funicula, Que Sera Sera, Wonderful Copenhagen, Tulips From Amsterdam, Una Paloma Blanca, Is This The Way to Amarillo?, Under the Bridges of Paris, Under Paris Skies, plus the music from Oliver and My Fair Lady.

I played for about two hours in bright sunshine, and it grew very hot. Undeterred I carried on regardless and had a lot of fun in the process. We may never do anything like this again but it was good while it lasted.

106 year old Palmira Frasconi says: "My secret: I sing and play the accordion"

The Proclamation was delivered to "grandmother" Palmira to celebrate her 106 years.
"Foligno can now boast among its fellow citizens ten new centenarians with the 'grandmother' of all Folignati being Mrs. Palmira Frasconi who has reached the milestone of 106 years, thus also entering among the records at national and international level, underlined the Mayor Stefano Zuccarini in his proclamation.

Even today she sings and plays her accordion. Special official awards have been delivered to her and others over 100 years old, with greetings and best wishes from the Mayor and the whole city.

Our elders are our beacon, their deep roots also make our lives more solid. To them, who have overcome the tragedies of wars and poverty, earthquakes and crises, and now also this scourge of the virus pandemic, we send a special hug noting, that there are examples for never giving up and living life with hope."

Eder Rodrigues and his Accordion: in a Canoe to Sing For the Amazon - Brazil

Eder Rodrigues and accordion
Eder RodriguesPublished by: la Repubblica Newspaper, Rome, Italy by Raffaella Scuderi.
April 25, 2020

Paddle reciting poems on the notes of an accordion bigger than him. It is a declaration of love for forests, to protect the indigenous peoples who inhabit it.

An accordion, a canoe, and the notes of an ancient song deposited on the tops of the trees with paddle strokes. It is the personal battle of Eder Rodrigues do Nascimento in defense of the Brazilian Amazon. "Nature depends on you, let it live. It will thank you and the whole world, with great pleasure", recite his verses as he walks along the bends of the Jurua river, one of the tributaries of the Amazon River.

"In my songs I talk about the protection of nature. I give free advice to everyone to do what I do: do not light fires, do not pollute the water and do not cut down trees. We must keep them, they are the ones who will save the world," he tells Afp .

Eder is 60 years old, lives in Boa Vista, a village that is part of the Uacari nature reserve, Brazil, whose inhabitants live mainly on fishing and crops. Since the start of the pandemic in its region, 200 people have already died.

"The land is drying up due to deforestation. We are very worried because we live in the jungle. - he says - Here come diseases that nobody knows. Sometimes people die without knowing what". And sing, with the accordion occupying all the space of his small canoe: "Whoever visits the Amazon arrives in paradise. Who lives in the Amazon is already in paradise. If you want to know biodiversity, come with me".

Note: Deforestation and forest fires continue in the region that many NGO's call the "lung of the planet" and lobby to stop the reduction of these natural forests.
