Stephen Dominko (1947-2017), New Hampshire – USA

Chopin’s ‘F Minor Concerto’, with the the New York Philharmonic.

HS Student Wins Award With Documentary “The Life of Stephen Dominko”
Stephen DominkoOn Sunday December 10th Stephen Dominko passed away.

Stephen Dominko’s life of music began when he was just four years old. While listening to a recording of Leroy Anderson’s ‘A Christmas Festival’ he ran from the room crying. When his parents asked him what was wrong, he told them, “The music is too beautiful to listen to.”

He began taking accordion lessons with Rudolf Molinaro. When Stephen was 10, he was a guest on the Sam Levenson TV show, which led to his concert career. By the age of 13, Stephen Dominko was the youngest US Open Champion in history.

Stephen played his first of two concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall at age 14, his second at age 18. During this same period, he was competing at international level representing the USA, becoming the youngest-ever World Champion in 1964, winning the CIA Coupe Mondiale in Toronto, Canada, at 17.

In 1966, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic staged international auditions to find six of the world’s most talented young musicians. After a series of auditions, Stephen and five others were chosen. They performed on The Bell Telephone Hour from Lincoln Center. Stephen who performed Chopin’s ‘F Minor Concerto’, was the only accordionist ever to play with The New York Philharmonic.

Recording, concerts, TV and radio performances followed, including performing on the Lawrence Welk Show. The young Dominko delighted his audiences with his fiery and expressive style.

In 1985 Stephen Dominko began composing. He also studied yoga and meditation. His experience as a VNA Hospice volunteer, combined with his spiritual practices, largely inspired his compositions.

He lived in the town of Washington, New Hampshire, where he taught piano, accordion and composition to a select number of advanced pupils. He is survived by his wife Beverly.

Finland 100 years Celebrations Include 100 Year Friend - Finland

Kimmo Mattila and Aili EloFinland celebrated on December 6th, the 100th anniversary of the nation of Finland. It was a great celebration with hundreds of events around the country.

I had a very special and rare private opportunity to play a mini concert and present two CDs, for my previous neighbor from the Village Eura. This lady, Mrs. Aili Elo celebrated her 100th birthday together with Finland. She was born just few days before Finland separated from the Russian Empire in 1917.

Mrs. Elo still lives in her own apartment, reads daily newspapers and goes weekly to meet her younger friends.

It was a great event to celebrate her 100th birthday and the Finland 100 anniversary in the same week.

Stockport Accordion Club’s Charity Concert, Cheshire – UK

Stockport Accordion Club concert
Stockport Accordion Club’s big annual charity fund raising concert, organised by John Jones MBE, took place on Friday December 8th at the Broken Cross Club in Macclesfield, Cheshire. This year’s line-up included the Stockport AC Band (with no less than six conductors – John Trigg, Dennis Pepler, Adrienne Sharpe, Tony Ainscough, Marj Howard, Brennan Wilson!), Accordion Spice, Scottish Quartet, Helen Rich, and the fabulous and inimitable Pearl Fawcett-Adriano, who performed solos and also duets with her cousin Philip Watson.

The Band pieces included The Bluebell Polka, Las Chiapanecas, After the Ball, Simple Gifts, Amapola, Schneewalzer, Donauwellen, Wien bleibt Wien, Moonlight Serenade, My Way, Liberty Bell, and the Policeman’s Song. SAC member Ged Sweeney sang the ‘Policeman’s Song (from Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance), backed by the Band, which proved to be a highlight.

We have been doing this concert since 1999 and this year’s event raised over £1,000 for the East Cheshire Hospice whilst doing our bit to showcase the accordion to the general public.
