The musical guest at the Miss Italia 2012 finals, RAI TV September 10th, was the famous Italian singer Biagio Antonacci who with accordionist Massimo Tagliata, performed a medley of three of Antonacci's most famous songs "Quanto tempo e ancora","Pazzo di lei" and "Se io Se lei".

At the end, Biagio Antonacci says in Italian that the accordion is one of the great instruments and that it is entirely handmade in Castelfidardo!

Then the whole band took the stage and in the video above, they performed his biggest hit "Non vivo più senza te" which features lots of accordion and has been the biggest hit, selling the most CD's in Italy this summer. Great publicity for the accordion.

Castelfidardo Festival Opens with Before Festival Concerts, Daily Reports - Italy

Mirco Patarini
Mario D'AmarioThe 2012 Festival Internazionale of Accordion, Castelfidardo was opened on 13th September with a concert in Loreto as part of a series of 'Before Festival' concerts to promote the event to the Italian public.

The first concert opened by the Deputy Mayor of Loreto featured Danilo Di Paolonicola, Mirco Patarini and Mario D'Amario and the event was sponsored by Scandalli Accordions, Paolo Soprani and Roland Europe.

The program of each player was varied and really showed a huge range of musical styles that the diatonique, concert and digital accordions, in the hands of professionals, is capable of.

A very enjoyable concert to start the 'Before Festival' concert series and festival promotions. Further pictures of this concert will be place online this weekend at: 2012 Concorso

Kyiv Classic Duo UK Tour Report, Kiev – Ukraine

The Kyiv Classic DuoThe Kyiv Classic Duo – accordionists Igor Sayenko and Oleksiy Kolomoeits – have done several concert tours of Great Britain, each time raising money for the victims of the Chernoby nuclear disaster via the Hippokrat Society charity. Igor Sayenko writes, “Last June we have been to UK with concerts as before. Speaking about raising fund for the Hippokrat Society, we are proud to say we have raised £3,893! This is less, than on 2010 and 2011 years, but I think it's still worth to do it. So, after some requests for year 2013 and some discussions we are starting to plan our next journey to the UK for July 2013”.

The Kyiv Classic Duo are one of the world’s finest accordion duos, and have acquired a loyal following in the UK. If any clubs or festivals are interested in booking them for next July, contact Igor Sayenko.

‘14 Years Ago’ – Enter the concertina

Charles WheatstoneConcertinaThe Accordions Worldwide news for September 18th 1998 included mention of a BBC TV program that referred to Charles Wheatstone, inventor of the English concertina and a renowned scientist in the 19th Century.

Wheatstone was one of several Europeans who experimented with the Chinese imported sheng, resulting in the invention of such instruments as the concertina, bandoneon, harmonica, harmonium, and, of course, the accordion. We should all be thankful for their efforts and ingenuity.

SCIENCE AND CONCERTINAS - UK
Contributed by Chris Timson

A new series of the popular science program ‘Local Heroes’ has just started on BBC 2 (UK). The October 5th edition has a segment devoted to Charles Wheatstone, inventor of the concertina and is mostly set in the computer games shop in Gloucester where he was born.

Chris Timson was asked to provide consultancy for the show and he also provided the concertinas shown in the broadcast. Of particular interest is the symphonium, loaned by Colin Dipper. The symphonium is the direct predecessor of the concertina, and Chris believes there are no more than 20 left in the world.
