Accordions Afloat on Viking and Royal Carribean Line Cruise Ships

Viking Star
Viking StarTwo Italian-made accordions can be found as wall decoration with a third (playable) accordion provided in Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant aboard Viking Cruises’ delightful 930-passenger mid-size cruise ship Viking Star. Picture above with professional accordionist and composer Douglas Ward.

The three accordions were sourced and provided by Alan Young from the UK.

Sister ships Viking Sky and Viking Sea are presently under construction and are set to debut in 2016 and 2017 respectively. They too, will have a Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant on board, so perhaps there will be even more accordions afloat!

Meanwhile, large photographs of famous American accordionists and accordion orchestras from the 1940s and 1950s (including Frank Gaviani and his orchestra) can be found as wall decoration in the Sorrento’s Pizzeria eatery aboard Royal Caribbean International’s 3,701-passenger large resort ship Freedom of the Seas.

Freedom of the Seas is the only cruise ship in this company’s large fleet to feature accordions as part of the interior décor.

Compositions by the author are available online at: Douglas Ward

31st St. Petersburg International Accordion Festival - Russia

Oleg Sharov, Renzo Ruggieri, Alexander Dmitriev
Renzo RuggieriPicture above: Oleg Sharov, Renzo Ruggieri and Art director of the festival since inception, Alexander Dmitriev. Picture left Renzo Ruggieri.

November 1st to 4th, was the 31st International Festival of Music for Accordion in the White Hall of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and in chamber hall of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory.

1st November concert featured "Timbre Russian", a unique ensemble from Moscow, performing music on the accordions made by Russian master Nicolay Kosorukov. These instruments imitate the sound of the most popular classical wind instruments: tuba, french horn, clarinet, oboe and "Timbre Russian" performed an excellent program of different styles and genres.

2nd November concert, 1st half, featured the winner of many international competitions, Vladislav Pligovka of Belarus. His fascinating style of performing, superb technique, and good feeling of melody inspired the audience as the music of Scarlatti, Pachelbel, Rachmaninov filled the hall.

The second half of this concert featured an accordionist from “another musical planet”. Free, full of energy, was the excellent Italian jazz accordionist Renzo Ruggieri. As always, Renzo surprised the St Petersburg audience with his new program including his interpretation and improvisations on themes of classical Argentine tangos: works by Piazzolla, Villoldo and Rodriguez and of course, some of his own famous compositions, to excite the audience.

3rd November concert included performances by the best students of the St Petersburg colleges including laureates of the different 2015 competitions. All these young participants performed at a high level.

The finale, was the Gala Concert in White Hall on November 4th, where all the participants of 31st St. Petersburg International Accordion Festival performed. Among them was the multi laureate of 2015 international competitions Vladimir Stupnikov. This concert became a bright parade of talent and high professionalism, and a marvelous completion of the Festival!

Joan GraumanOver the years, Joan Grauman has been recorded often for documentary films, live concerts, accompanying other artists' CDs. Just recently, Joan decided to record her own CD "Accordion Potpourri". Joan's aim was to pick simple and beautiful melodies that sound so good on the accordion.

Joan Grauman, by the age of 22, had a degree in piano performance and music education, and was the director of the Columbia International Folk Dancers. She then learnt the accordion accompanying Balkan/Gypsy band, BAMCO for 18 years, and also performed in Klezmer and Bavarian groups.

Since 2004, Joan has been the Vice-President and music director of the Washington Metropolitan Accordion Society (WMAS) and the director of its performing group, the Potomac Accordion Ensemble. She is on the Governing Board of the American Accordionists' Association (AAA) and is its Historian.

The cost of the CD is $15 for orders from the US, Canada and Mexico or $19 for orders from all other countries. All proceeds from the sale of the CDs will go to support the youth orchestra and ensemble activities sponsored by the American Accordionists' Association.
