13th World Music Festival, Innsbruck - Austriaby Harley Jones |
Held every three years, the 13th World Music Festival organised by the Deutscher Harmonika-Verband e.V. (DHV) held in Innsbruck between 30th May to 2 June. This festival attracts accordion orchestras and ensembles from all over middle Europe and other countries, as well as featuring top soloist performers and groups in concert. The 2019 13th Annual Accordion Art Festival was held from June 14th to 16th in Roseto degli Abruzzi, TE, directed by Renzo Ruggieri in collaboration with the Comune di Roseto degli Abruzzi. The event included the 2019 Orpheus Award and the Italia Award International Competition with competitors from all over the world. Competition categories include classical accordion, virtuoso and diatonic for a variety of age groups. Also awarded from the family was his older brother Cristian who won 1st place in category Junior Accordion. Accordion at 2019 Macedonia Pearl Folk Seminar - Macedoniaby Christine Johnstone |
The Macedonian Pearl Folk Seminar for music, song and dance will be held at the Hotel Manastir in Berovo, Macedonia from July 25th to August 3rd. The event will include 10 days of folk music, brass bands, orchestral classes, dancing and popular local guests. Each evening there will be a “Live Music Party” with traditional Macedonian instruments. Founder and Director of this event is accordionist Goran Alachki, who has composed over 300 songs, dances and arrangements. He will hold traditional Macedonian folk music seminars and workshops daily throughout the event for soloists and groups. Summer Magic of Classical Music – Croatiaby Christine Johnstone |
Accordionist Martina Jembrisak performed a classical concert with the Junge Sinfoniker Basel (conducted by Ulrich Dietsche) at the Croatian National Theatre in Split, Croatia on June 30th. Their program included works by Leonard Bernstein, Mikolaja Majkusiaka and Robert Schumann. The following day Martina had the privilege of playing at the Croatian Radio in Split on a show “Nedjeljni Akvarel” where she also spoke about her studies in Germany as well as the concert at the National Theatre. This project represents a special program of international cooperation between the Split music youth and the Music Academy in Basel. Further concerts were held at the Croatian National Theatre in Šibenik on July 2nd and at the Classic Open Air Zadar on July 4th. |
New CD: Iñaki Alberdi and Carlos Mena Released CD - Spainby Harley Jones |
Iñaki Alberdi and Carlos Mena released their CD “Cueurs Desolez” in a concert-presentation on Friday, May 31 at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Published by IBS Classical, the CD includes works by Josquin Des Prez, Bach, Jesús Torres, Gabriel Erkoreka, Joan Magramé and José María Sánchez-Verdú. In the presentation, which will also include musicologist José Luis García del Busto and IBS Classical director Paco Moya, Iñaki Alberdi and Carlos Mena will perform the works “Mille regretz” by Josquin Des Prez and “Llama de amor vivo” by Jesús Torres. “Live at Lunch” at Royal Opera House – UKby Christine Johnstone |
A free concert series entitled “Live at Lunch” is currently underway at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Linbury Theatre Foyer in London until July 26th, 2019. On July 5th, the Opera House featured “Carmen – in 40 minutes!” which was a shortened version of Carmen arranged for piano, accordion and violin, telling the story of how Carmen and Don José fall in love and end up in a state of despair. The arrangement included the famous Habanera, Flower Song and heart-breaking finale. Performers were Romano Viazzani (accordion), Philippa Mo (violin), Kelvin Lim (piano), Alexander James Edwards (tenor) and Marie Elliott (mezzo-soprano). |

The Auckland Accordion Symphonietta conducted by well known vocalist and accordionist Lionel Reekie, performed their biannual concert entitled “No Words” at the Rose Centre in Belmont, Auckland on July 7th. Special guest performers were Adam Perry and sisters Angela & Jessie Chen who are the New Zealand representatives competing at the Coupe Mondiale World Competition in Shenzhen, China next month. The orchestra program included pieces by Strauss, Rubinstein and Leroy Anderson as well as “Two plus One” (Gary Daverne), finishing with Rossini’s La Scala Di Seta. The Auckland Accordion Symphonietta will hold their next concert on November 24th, 2019. |

On July 28th they will entertain at the Trout Lake Farmer's Market in Vancouver, BC. Teapot in the Tuba have worked together as a duo for three years and mingles traditional, classical, jazz, original and pop repertoire in potent combinations. |

The concert is presented in partnership with Beth Tzedec Congregation and with the support of UJA Committee for Yiddish. Accordion Spice will be playing in a charity concert for Clic Sargent (a cancer charity) at Levenshulme Baptist Church in Levenshulme, Manchester on Friday August 30th at 7.30pm. The concert is an annual event organised by a couple who have organised concerts for over 20 years. Entries will close on September 5th for the XII International Accordion Composition competition “Francisco Escudero organised by the Hauspoz Euskal Herriko Akordoei Elkartea. The objective of the contest is to promote the creation of pieces for solo accordion and for accordion in chamber music and their length may not exceed 10 minutes. The works of chamber music must be composed for a maximum of four players in which there is at least one accordion. The competition is open to composers of any age and nationality. Only pieces written after January 2015 will be admitted. Works must never have been previously performed either in public or through any digital or mechanical means. The London Accordion Orchestra are delighted to be appearing for the first time in Norwich to help celebrate the Norwich Accordion Club's 50th Anniversary. It will be a joint concert with NAC performing in the first half of the concert and LAO in the second.
