Dr. William Schimmel: Accordionist for “Carousel” Nominated for 11 Tony Awards - USAby Rita Davidson Barnea |

 AAA Board member Dr. William Schimmel is the featured accordionist in the Hit Broadway revival of “Carousel”. This Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel is a new orchestration by Jonathan Tunick which heavily features the accordion.Ironically, the accordion was not part of the original orchestration in the first 1945 production and subsequent productions. For 2018, the accordion adds a new dimension to the dark story with redemption at the end. “Carousel” has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards! It features a multi racial cast with Joshua Henry (Hamilton) as Billy Bigelow, Jessie Mueller (Beautiful) and Rene Flemming (international opera diva). The Chicago Tribune says: “God is in Carousel”. It has been nominated for 12 Drama Desk Awards, 6 Outer Critic Awards and 3 Drama League Awards. A Cast recording will appear soon. William Schimmel also can be heard on the new CD “Jarvis and Friends” which features Schimmel and percussionist Peter Jarvis performing their collaborative composition, “Devotional Suite” and Schimmel’s New York Classical. A second CD features Schimmel in “The Concerto for Accordion and Percussion” by Peter Jarvis performed by The New Jersey Percussion Ensemble. Both CD’s are on The Composers’ Concordance label distributed by Naxos. |

 As part of the international World Accordion Day this year’s „Tag der Harnonika“ will be held in the beautiful scenery of Angerberg (Tyrol, near Innsbruck) from 10 – 13 May 2018. Download poster on left and color program at: 2018TagHarmonika.pdf This bi-annual event will include the 28th competition of accordion soloists, duos, ensembles (both chamber and world music categories) and orchestras, the 25th diatonic competition (so-called Styrian harmonica), the 20th competition for folk music ensembles and the 13th competition for mouth-organ (solo, ensembles and orchestras). To attract more candidates a special „entertainment competition“ (categories corresponding to the competition for classical accordion) will be organized for the very first time. The prize-giving concerts for accordion and mouth-organ will be held on Friday at 6 p.m., for diatonic and folkmusic ensembles on Saturday at 6 p.m. To conclude the event, the evening entertainment will be by Austrian folk ensemble „Die runden Oberkrainer“. In a rare double proclamation, Mayor Paine also declared May 5th as Dr. Willard A. Palmer Day. Picture left, quality download or print at: 2018Proclomations.pdf Museum Curator Helmi Harrington Ph.D, hosted the magnificent weekend of celebrations including workshops, concerts and social activites, attracting participants from across the United States. The event paid tribute to the legacy of the late Dr. Willard 'Bill' Palmer and the initiative of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA), World Accordion Day, celebrating the May 6, 1829 patent of the accordion. World Accordion Day was opened by Ambassador Kevin Friedrich on behalf of the CIA and then featured an Accordion History demonstration by Helmi Harrington, utilizing an historical cross section of some of the 1,300 accordions found on display at the Museum. Featured artists for the worldwide celebration included popular Thunder Bay accordionist John Scaffeo, the Celtic Focus group Eira including Sue Spencer, Jim Ofsthun and Liesel Wilson (combining accordions, erhu, violin, guitar and vocals), Minneapolis accordionist Dee Langley and event headliner, Grammy winner and Country Hall of Fame honoree Joey Miskulin. Joey was joined by Stas Venglevski for several pieces and included the completely improvised duo 'A World of Accordions Museum Tango', a stunning combination of the talents of the two renowned musicians. The events concluded with the 35 member Festival Orchestra under the direction of symphony Conductor Tracey Gibbens, as they performed more than a dozen works from around the world. The combined Willard Palmer Festival also featured an exciting array of activities from profiling the popular Palmer and Hughes Accordion Course (selections from each book were performed by Helmi's students) and historical lectures by Bill Palmer, III, including a demonstration of the prototype of the 'Tiger' accordion models. Concert performances were given by Dr. Mike Middleton (accordion) with Clayton Capps (tuba), Dee Langley, Stas Venglevski and the Fremonts, comprising Stephani Dodd (accordion) and Justin Badger Guitar). During the final concert, two of Dr. Willard Palmer's instruments, his magnificent Harpsichord 'Big Red' and his Titano Super Emperor V Accordion were showcased by Tracey Gibbons and Helmi Harrington respectively. An interesting connection showed to be that Stephani Dodd (accordionist with the Fremonts) is Executive Assistant at Peaksware, the company that now owns Alfred Music, the publishers of the Palmer and Hughes and Alfred Masterworks books.  The Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) welcomes Mika Väyrynen as new accordion lecturer starting in the academic year 2018/19. Students are invited to apply now for studies at ZHdK for the upcoming academic year of studies. Potential students may see the state of the art facilities at https://www.zhdk.ch/en/dmu.As one of the worlds best known and most highly-acclaimed accordionists, Väyrynen has performed hundreds of concerts in Finland and throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. A highly-respected pedagogue, Mika Väyrynen teaches at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste as docent of accordion (Zürich, Switzerland), at the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland) and at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Tampere, Finland). He has served as guest lecturer at many of the world's leading academic accordion institutions such as the Paris Conservatory, London Royal Academy of Music, Esmuc Barcelona, Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, Musikhochschule Freiburg, Estonian Academy of Music and Dance, Lithuanian Music Academy, Royal Conservatory of Copenhagen, Conservatory Superior in Zaragoza (Spain), Music Academy of Pula (Croatia), Conservatory Santa Cecilia in Rome, Conservatory of Oviedo (Spain), Conservatory of Frosinone (Italy) and The Krakow Music Academy. Graduates from his classes are working as soloists and teachers all over the world and many have won prizes at International accordion, chamber music and multi-instrumental competitions. The Department of Music offers programs in the creation, teaching, and interpretation of classical music, jazz, pop, and church music. Two BA and four MA degree courses provide professional training for future orchestra and school musicians, orchestra and choir conductors, soloists and chamber musicians. | Accordion students from the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London will be performing with the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy, at St David’s Hall, Cardiff on Friday May 18th and again at the Royal Festival Hall, London, on Sunday May 20th, both at 7.30 pm. The concerts commemorate the Russian Revolution of 1917, and are respectively titled ‘Voices of Revolution’ and ‘Voices of Revolution: Exile & Return’. Foiled Accordion Theft, Birmingham Accordion Centre – UKby Rob Howard |
  On May 9th a man entered the premises of the Birmingham Accordion Centre, 131 Garrison St, Birmingham B9 4DE, and was foiled in an attempt to steal an accordion. Four pictures of the theft from store cameras.The business owner Rob Beecroft explains: “A message to all accordion and music retailers this man came into our premises today and took a Sonola 120 bass accordion within seconds of us taking our eyes off him. | On Tuesday May 8th the duo Mazaika – Igor Outkine (midi accordion and vocals) and Elizabeth Harrison (violin, domra, vocals) - performed lively Russian folk and Gypsy music on board HMS Belfast, moored in London on the Thames, at an event to celebrate VE Day. There were many World War Two veterans present, including several former Soviet army veterans, who all very much enjoyed the entertainment by Mazaika. The Soviet veterans were presented with a flag from HMS Belfast in honour of the occasion. On May 9th Mazaika performed at a Victory Day concert at Pushkin House in Bloomsbury Square, London, commemorating the day the USSR formally ended the war in Europe.  Accordionist Ferran Martinez performed a World Accordion Day solo concert on Saturday May 5th in Cervera, Lleida, Catalonia, northern Spain. His programme included music by E. Piaf, A. Piazzolla, J.S.Bach, P. Frosini, C. Dauquin, and V. Semionov.Ferran Martinez, born in 1971, is a graduate of the Barcelona Conservatory. He performs solo classical concerts and is a member of the Cavall Bernat group, performing Catalan popular music. He is also both an accordion and computer teacher. Cavall Bernat have recently released a new CD, Ulls de Mar’. This month they perform on May 19th at Rte La Bufa, and on May 26th at Taverna La Bella Lola. | The festival ‘L'Accordéon Plein Pot’ takes place at 15 rue du Docteur Blanchard, St Quentin la Poterie, a commune in the Gard department in southern France, from May 8th to 13th. This event, which features accordion styles ranging from musette to Cajun to pop music, includes concerts, conferences, exhibitions, and dancing. Guest accordionists include Jeremie Buirette, Steve Normandin, Cédric Pierini, Freddo Boss, Denis Massé, and more, including several bands. Accordionists Jacques Mornet, Laetitia Mallet, Anaïs Bessières, Julien Locatelli and Maxime Novas, from the well-known accordion school CNIMA J. | The Gustavo Reynoso Trio performs Chamame dance music on Friday May 11th, 9pm, at the Centro Cultural Academias Previale, Lavajella 48, Salto, Uruguay. Gustavo Reynoso, born 1990 in Paraná, Entre Ríos, Argentina, began studying the bandoneon aged 9 at the Municipal School of Music of Aranguren. He later studied the guitar, the 2-row and 3-row diatonic accordions, and also the piano accordion, though the bandoneon remains his first choice of instrument. He plays with various ensembles and also as a soloist. |

 French accordionist and composer Jacques Pellarin and his vocalist wife Corinne, as the duo ‘Jac & Co’, have taken the music of France to many countries, including the USA, where they are regular visitors. This weekend, May 11th, 12th and 13th, they will be performing for three evenings at the French restaurant ‘Le Pot au Feu’ in Providence, Rhode Island.According to the French magazine Le Progrès, they “bring back almost a century of the traditional French 'chanson' songs in the likes of Édith Piaf and Yves Montand, Francis Lemarque.  Accordionist Sylvia Pagni performs in a concert she has devised titled ‘Notte Italiana’, along with other musicians, on Saturday May 12th, 9pm, at the Teatro Polifunzionale, Pineto (TE), Italy. A special guest will be the singer Loris Cattunar, presenting his tribute to Elvis Presley.Sylvia Pagni began studying piano, accordion and conducting under the guidance of her father, Giuseppe Pagni, musician and teacher, earning a diploma at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. With her accordion, she has been a guest in a concert in memory of Gorni Kramer in an international jazz festival attended by Rick Wakeman, and the Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, at the Sistina in Rome. |

 The annual Shand Morino Gathering takes place on Sunday May 13th, 1pm to 5pm, at The Windygates Institute, Milton Road, Windygates, Leven, Fife KY8 5DG. The event is organised by the Windygates Button-key Accordion and Fiddle Club to pay tribute to Sir Jimmy Shand (1908-2000), perhaps the world’s most famous exponent of Scottish country dance music. Shand Morino owners are invited to play at this afternoon concert.The Shand Morino is one of the most iconic of all accordions, and in the late 1930s was part designed by Jimmy Shand in collaboration with Venanzio Morino, chief designer at Hohner at the time. Jimmy Shand had an idea for improving the response of the three row diatonic accordion and together with the accordion retailer Charles Forbes (his employer at the time) and Morino they designed and built the Hohner Special in 1939. After World War Two, a design based on this instrument was mass produced by Hohner under the name ‘Shand Morino’. The Shand Morino is a British Chromatic accordion – a hybrid instrument combining a diatonic treble keyboard with a stradella bass, and is the most celebrated type of this kind of accordion. |

 The versatile accordionist and composer Sue Coppard, from Wiltshire, is the guest at Guildford Accordion Club on Friday May 18th, 8pm. The venue is the Ripley Village Hall, High St, Ripley, Surrey GU23 6AF. Doors open at 7pm. Admission is £5, which includes refreshments.The club night will begin at 7.30pm with a “play-along” of familiar tunes (bring your musical instrument and join in – all levels of proficiency are welcome to play or just to listen.) The famous theme of the last dance is an "audience winner".Ivano Battiston newly released arrangements: Catalog: battiston105 The "Ricercare a tre" arranged for accordion solo, is a three-voice fugue and the first piece of the Musical Offering (1747) by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most articulate and complex works ever composed, and is universally considered one of the highest points ever achieved in the history of music. All the material is based on a musical theme created by Frederick II of Prussia and masterfully elaborated by the great German musician. This video does not include the intro of the work.Renzo Ruggieri has released "Il bosco incantato" the first piece he has composed for free bass accordion. Renzo writes: "I wrote the melody for a theatrical show by Marco Goldin - to whom the piece is dedicated - on the famous painter Edward Munch. In fact, the title recalls one of his paintings "The Enchanted Forest" of 1903. Then the simple melodic idea was reworked, arranged and used for "the guided solo", a moment that the soloist can freely interpret and personalize."
