Results Announced: Online Akkordeon Musik Preis 2021 Competition - Germany

Musik preis logo
DHV logoThe Deutscher Harmonika-Verband e.V. (DHV) have announced the winners of the 2021 Akkordeon Musik Preis video competition, a youth competition of the DHV for instrumentalists up to the age of 27 with their first place of residence in Germany.

The event was a complete success, with almost 200 video contributions submitted and evaluated from 5th to 6th June by jury members.

Due to the corona pandemic, solo contributions were mainly submitted with a few, but still first-class contributions in the duo and ensemble genres.

The 17 adjudicators from all over Germany had no easy task, because of the high to excellent quality of competitors, both in terms of playing technology and interpretation.

In Category 5 and Professional categories the best-rated results were achieved with an outstanding 48.0 out of a possible 50 points by Isabell Schirmer and Kim Winter in the “Accordion/Chamber Music (Amateurs)" class and Lukas Proske in the “Accordion/Solo Popularmusik (Professionals)" class.

Ronja Ramisch won the “Accordion/Solo (Amateurs)” title with 47.8 points, closely followed by Antonio Del Castillo, who was awarded the "Friedrich Lips Cup" with a razor-thin three-tenths gap and thus gets the chance for a solo concert at the festival of the same name in Chelyabinsk (Russia).

With the "Honorary Prize of the Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg", one of the special prizes went to Florian Wagner for his outstanding performance in the “Accordion/Solo Popularmusik (Amateure)” category.

The “Wolfgang Jacobi Special Prize” is regularly awarded to the best interpretation of a work by the composer. At this year's Accordion Music Prize, the award was divided among four participants:

Anna-Katharina Schau
Katharina Jaeger
Nicole Alber
Dana Marlen Röhling

Giorgio Dellarole, The Art of Accommodating - Italy

Large concert video - allow a few seconds to load.

La Saison culturelle proposed the concert "The Art of Accommodating" by the Extrarmonica ensemble. Extrharmonic Ensemble members are: Giorgio Dellarole (accordion), Alessandro Ciccolini (violin), Enrico Contini (cello), Francesco Baroni (harpsichord).

When we talk about baroque music we generally mean that composed between the early 1600s and the mid-1700s, when the production of brilliant and incredibly prolific composers created and developed musical forms languages.

Today any musician, of any level, has songs from this period in their repertoire, and the amount of publications on "how" this repertoire should be played is huge. Leaving aside the acrobatic performances of certain virtuosos who use Bach or Scarlatti to exhibit their acrobatic qualities, we see an extremely interesting research on the part of passionate and rigorous lovers, especially on the question of joints, embellishments, times.

The accordion, due to its formidable versatility, is gaining a very important position, especially thanks to some artists. Among these, the talent and competence of Giorgio Dellarole shines, who with commitment and passion is tracing an increasingly safe way towards a conscious execution of the Baroque repertoire with the accordion.

The Art of Accommodating refers to the practice, common in that period, of adapting and playing many pieces to instruments, or formations of instruments, different from those of origin. Using an instrument with a specific "temperament" (Vallotti, to be precise, even if a little modified), Giorgio Dellarole's accordion integrates beautifully with instruments that, however, were already "adults" in the Baroque period. Using an unequal temperament, listening to this Ensemble reserves pleasant surprises from a harmonic point of view, creating a lively and dynamic atmosphere.

The concert of the Extrharmonic Ensemble on 7 June 2021 at the Spendor in Aosta, for the Saison Culturelle, as well as a longed-for return to live music, constitutes a new milestone in the integration of the accordion into the repertoires of all times.

Programma:
Giovanni Maria Bononcini (1642-16 78), Sonata a tre in Sol minore
Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672-1749), Inventione IV in Sol minore Op.10
Alessandro Stradella (1639-16 82), Sonata in Re minore a violino, violoncello e basso
Henry Purcell (1659-1695), Ouverture e Chaconne dall’opera King Arthur
Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759), Trio Sonata in Sol maggiore Op.5 n.4 - HWV399
Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747), Sonata I per violoncello e basso in La minore
Giovanni Battista Bassani (c.1650-17 16), Sonata a tre in Re maggiore

Alan Reekie Receives Award in 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours – New Zealand

Alan ReekieLong-time supporter of accordion activities in New Zealand, Alan Reekie (picture right – Auckland) has been awarded the Queens Service Medal (QSM) by Queen Elizabeth II in her 2021 Birthday honours.

Announced on 7th June, 2021, Alan was bestowed this prestigious award for his contribution to Performing Arts Governance. Alan’s children, Lionel Reekie and Carolyn both started accordion at an early age, and as they progressed through local accordion competitions throughout their childhood, Alan began to take an active role volunteering with many of the various associations that created musical activities within the community.

Lionel Reekie subsequently went on to a career as an accordion performer, teacher conductor and adjudicator.

Lionel and Carolyn were both members of the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra, and Alan travelled as a supporter with this group to Europe and the UK in 1986 and to Australia and South East Asia in 1988.

Since the 1980’s he has been involved with the North Shore Accordion Orchestras and served as a committee member of the North Shore Performing Arts Society (NSPAS). He held the position of President of the NSPAS from 1992 until 2018, and still serves as Treasurer. The NSPAS holds annual competitions in dance, vocal and instrumental performance.

This event is the largest of its type in the country. Many New Zealand solo accordion champions have competed successfully in the accordion competitions run by NSPAS.

Alan has also been Secretary of the North Shore Theatre and Arts Trust (the PumpHouse Theatre) from 2007, and was Treasurer from 2011 to 2014, being made a Life Member in 2018.

The PumpHouse has flourished during his tenure with increased audience and higher numbers, and his continued involvement has played a large part in the growth and stability of the organisation.

This theatre is one of Auckland’s best known and most used professional venues. As a location for live theatre, music, and even television filming, the PumpHouse has also been used for numerous accordion concerts, competitions and events.

Alan’s QSM award is the culmination of a life-time of voluntary work for Performing Arts. Alan was previously awarded the Variety Artists Club Scroll of Honour in 2009, and this year also received life membership of the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand – the nationwide governing body for affiliated completion organisations.

The Queens Service Medal will be presented at a ceremony to be held at Government House by Her Excellency, the Governor General of New Zealand on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen in November, 2021.

Online: 10th European Forum on Music 2021

Forum poster
The 10th European Forum on Music 2021 "Claiming a front row seat - the place of music in Society" took place as an online event from June 2nd to 5th.

It offered a variety of sessions, including keynote speeches, panel discussions, interactive workshops and networking sessions for the music sector to exchange and to discuss the role and place of music in society. Even though the music sector was hit hard, it will come out of the crisis stronger, more resilient and claiming its rightful place which will be reflected in future action.

After a keynote the forum started with a panel discussion including questions and answers from the audience with video bites of music projects showing the importance of music for society and dealing with the working conditions of musical artists.

In the Covid-19 lounge participants could exchange information on challenges, best practices and needs of music organisations in and after the crisis.

The second day gave space to the relationship between music and sustainable development goals (SDGs) in cultural sectors:
1) Music as a provider of life interest and meaning for people that will replace consumerism.
2) Music, music organizations and musicians as promoters and drivers of the change we need.

In the context of weighing out values, there was a lively discussion about weighing the pros and cons of environmental issues and cultural exchange. Another interactive debate focused on overcoming stigma and getting back to enjoying music.

Valuable future-oriented information was given on EU Copyright Directive and a General introduction to EU funding: Creative Europe (Cooperation Projects and Networks) and Horizon Europe.

Of course, there was some time left for networking and exhibition. As an artistic side programme of the EFM 2021 some concerts and a movie were offered.
