Grayson Masefield Wins 2009 Coupe Mondiale – New Zealandby Harley Jones |

| In a fairy tale ending to the Coupe Mondiale in New Zealand, Grayson Masefield won in front of his very enthusiastic home crowd making a very exciting ending to the 2009 Coupe Mondiale event. Large audiences, over 1,000 people on some nights, supported Grayson at his competition performances. Grayson won both the Coupe Mondiale and the Virtuoso Entertainment categories – the first time that both these events have been won in the same year. The Coupe Mondiale Daily Reports are now finalised and online at the Coupe Mondiale website. You can download the full results of each candidate. |

| On August 16th and 17th the first festival dedicated to the great Peppino Principe was held in Monte Sant'Angelo (Foggia). This was two days of intense music in the birthplace of the Prince of Accordion. On the opening night accordionists Donato Santoianni, from Molise, and Danilo di Paolonicola, from Abruzzo, and the very young artistes Andrea di Giacomo and Andrea Tini, performed on stage in Monte Sant'Angelo. On August 17th, the famous jazz accordionist Renzo Ruggieri honored the Maestro. On stage Adriano Ranieri, performed classical music, and the virtuoso Antonio Spaccarotella, and the Savatore Cauteruccio Duo performed World Music. The festival ended with a performance of the Peppino Principe Group that literally drove the local citizens out of their minds with several standing ovations for their idol, especially when concluding the evening with a final duet together with Renzo Ruggieri, believed by many to be his successor.  Dr. William Schimmel’s performance schedule includes:On September 8th, 9th and 11th, Dr. Schimmel will perform with the New York Philharmonic in a concert that will feature the famous tenor, Andrea Bocelli. The concert will take place at Carnegie Hall. On September 9th, Dr. Schimmel will perform his own work, ‘Club Parusia’, at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. His work was initially commissioned by the Presbyterian Biennial and premiered in Tucson, Arizona. It was conceived in collaboration with Rev.Robert Brashear. Dr. Schimmel will perform with The Argento Ensemble, conducted by Michel Galante, on September 12th in a world premiere of ‘Xenos’, by Austrian composer, Beat Furrer, who will also act as the narrator. The performance will take place at Le Poisson Rouge, formerly The Village Gate, a venue devoted to innovative new music. On September 14th and 5 consecutive Tuesdays following, Dr. Schimmel will perform with singer Gay Marshall in a series of songs made famous by the great Edith Piaf. The performances will take place at the Metropolitan Room, one of Manhattan’s most sophisticated nightclubs. Dr. Schimmel will premiere his new work, ‘Let’s Celebrate’, on September 20th at New York’s Tavern on the Green, in a tribute to Faithe Deffner, who will be honored with A Lifetime Achievment Award from the American Accordionists' Association. Charles Magnante Quartet DVD, Stockport - UKby Rob Howard |
 Charles Magnante (1905-86), born in New York, was for decades one of the world’s most admired accordionists, and his exceptional artistry did much to raise the image of the accordion in the USA and overseas. His recordings, compositions and arrangements are still held in high regard for their unrivalled quality. Magnante performed both as a soloist and as leader of his own quartet.A unique DVD is now available, featuring 5 numbers played by the Charles Magnante Quartet. The pieces performed are ‘Waltz a la Accordion’ (a swing arrangement by Magnante of Chopin’s ‘Minute Waltz’), ‘Tantalizin’ (Magnante), ‘Andalucia’ (‘The Breeze & I’, by Ernesto Lecuona), ‘Sweet Sue’ (Harris/Young), and ‘Dance of the Spanish Onion’ (David Rose). These films were made in 1946, and are known as ‘soundies’ (an early version of the music video). The line up is Charles Magnante – accordion, George Wright on electronic organ and piano, Jack Smith on electric guitar, and Eugene Ettore on string bass. George Wright went on to become one of America’s foremost theatre organists, Jack Smith was a leading jazz guitarist and vocalist, and Eugene Ettore found fame as an accordionist, composer and arranger.  The 3rd annual Tejano Conjunto Festival, featuring some of the best talent in tejano accordion music, takers place in Sacramento, California, on September 6th, 1pm, at Cesar Chavez Plaza. Performers at this year's festival include Hometown Boys, Jay Perez, Bob Gallarza, and more.Tejano/Conjunto music has it’s roots deep in the Rio Grande Valley where it began many years back and has continued to grow in popularity. It sings to the Mexican American working class who made this music popular. The music now has a category of it’s own in the Grammy awards, and Tejano Conjunto music has spread throughout the USA. |
