 The accordionist Oroitz Maiz, born in Gabiria in 1983, passed away this Thursday in Barcelona. According to the report of the television channel Euskal Telebista, on Saturday evening he choked while eating dinner and since then had been in a coma.Oroitz Maiz (Gabiria, Basque Country, 1983) began his musical studies age 7 and continues his studies in classical accordion at the "International Studies Center Acordeonísticos" with teachers Carlos Iturralde and Miren Iñarga. He studied harmony and counterpoint with the composer Jesús Torres, in Madrid and later still perfecting his accordion studies in Barcelona with Professor Iñaki Alberdi, and chamber music with Harry Sparnnay and Charles Tunnell. Later he moved to Germany to deepen their acordeonística training with the renowned Professor Stefan Hussong. He has given recitals and concerts throughout the Spanish geography, Portugal, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Egypt ... in auditoriums and concert halls as The Palace of Catalan Music, the venue, Gran Teatre del Liceu, National Auditorium, Auditori de Barcelona ... and has performed as a soloist with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, National Chamber Orchestra of Andorra, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC), Symphony Orchestra of Bilbao, Barcelona 216, Granollers Chamber Orchestra under the baton of directors like Fabien Gabel, Sebastian Weigle, Yasuaki Itakura, Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, among others. He has been awarded numerous competitions at state and worldwide as the Iberian Accordion Competition (Alcobaça, Portugal); International Competition of Les Corts, Guipuzcoano Accordion Competition, the International Accordion Competition (Andorra), music Youth of Spain, among others. He has recorded for various media how: BTV, Catalunya Radio, National Radio of Spain, Com Radio, ETB. He has also collaborated with several composers premiering their works for accordion: Joan Riera, German Moreno, Xao Ching ... |

| A name synonymous with the accordion, Tulio Gasperini passed away on Friday, February 20, 2015, at the age of 92. He was the beloved husband of Dolores (Brogi) Gasperini for 66 years and resided in Lincoln for 61 years. A full obituary article is on the USA News. |

  A partire da settembre 2015, il Conservatorium van Amsterdam offre la fisarmonica come materia principale. Due fisarmonicisti importanti costituiranno il gruppo di docenti, Marieke Grotenhuis e Marko Kassl (foto a sinistra), per formare un programma di studio che sarà rilevante a livello internazionale.Il Conservatorium van Amsterdam (CVA) è il conservatorio più grande e diversificato nei Paesi Bassi. Con gli insegnanti eccezionali di cui dispone, situato in uno dei centri musicali più vivaci d'Europa, il conservatorio sfrutta appieno il clima musicale di Amsterdam. Il conservatorio è quindi in una buona posizione per aiutare a trasformare gli studenti in musicisti versatili del più alto livello.  L'Università di Toronto ospita una competizione concerto ogni anno per selezionare i solisti che suoneranno con la sua orchestra nella prossima stagione concertistica. Il fine settimana del 10 e 11 gennaio Michael Bridge ha progredito attraverso entrambe le manche del concorso ed è stato selezionato come uno dei quattro vincitori che si esibiranno con l'orchestra durante la stagione 2015/16.Michael ha eseguito 'Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra' del compositore Paul Creston con una riduzione per pianoforte (dal compositore), eseguita dal Dr. Hye Won Cecilia Lee. La data della performance orchestrale sarà annunciata nei prossimi mesi. Ampiamente conosciuto nei circoli di fisarmonica come un campione di fisarmonica digitale canadese Roland e un intrattenitore polka-rock, le passioni principali di Michael ruotano intorno alla musica classica, contemporanea e da camera e il riconoscimento della fisarmonica come serio strumento da concerto. |

| Per la prima volta in Italia e nella storia della rinomata Accademia musicale pescarese, a conseguire il diploma in direzione è stato un giovane fisarmonicista triestino, Igor Zobin. Il direttore Igor Zobin ha già deciso che taglio dare a questa sua nuova avventura professionale, difatti ha rilasciato una intervista per Musica Colta dove dichiara: “la fisarmonica, ovvero il bayan nel mio caso, è uno strumento straordinario che ti permette di esplorare la musica vivendola in ogni sua dimensione! Nel bene e nel male è uno strumento giovane che ti proietta nel futuro, ma che dà a colui che è musicista nell’anima, anche gli strumenti per guardare indietro verso epoche lontane, verso stili diversi…mettendoti alla prova! La fisarmonica è sempre stata la mia orchestra…. fin da subito però ho sentito fortissimo dentro di me il desiderio di elevarmi anche come musicista in senso globale, di perseguire l’arte della musica. La direzione d’orchestra però è ancora un passo avanti, difficilmente descrivibile..è un arte immensa e complessa, direi unica per tutte le cose che rappresenta e che esige da te! Perciò sono felicissimo di aver avuto dei risultati così positivi in Accademia e di sentirmi in grado di fare questo cammino!” La carriera da direttore si aggiunge agli altri progetti di Igor, come musicista e studioso di fisarmonica. Gli facciamo le nostre più grandi congratulazioni per una carriera brillante tanto quanto merita. |

| The Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending February 23rd 2001 included an item about the premiere of a documentary film titled ‘Accordion Dreams’, which was soon to be screened at a festival in Texas. The documentary focused on conjunto, the accordion-driven music of the Tex-Mex community. This genre has thrived though the years, and in last week’s Accordions Worldwide news we reported that accordionist Flaco Jimenez, conjunto’s most successful player, has recently received a Lifetime Grammy award. Well done, Flaco! Documentary ‘Accordion Dreams’ at Film Festival – USA Contributed by Evy Ledesma ‘Accordion Dreams’, the newest film by Hector Galan will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, during March. ‘Accordion Dreams’ is an exciting journey into the heart and soul of conjunto music. The documentary explores the historical and cultural impact that accordion based conjunto music has had while revealing how a younger generation of squeezebox trailblazers are keeping the music alive. Accordion Dreams will be broadcast nationally in the United States on PBS. |

 Sarà il maestro Marco Lo Russo a scaldare i cuori del secondo appuntamento della Rassegna di nuova musica popolare e d’autore, “Folk a Metà” a Fondi alle ore 21.30 di sabato 21 Febbraio.La rassegna, giunta alla seconda edizione approda a Fondi, nella Sala Grande di Palazzo Caetani, nel centralissimo Corso Appio Claudio e vede la collaborazione dell’associazione culturale “Piacere la conoscenza”, promotrice e organizzatrice della manifestazione, e il Parco Naturale Regionale Monti Ausoni e Lago di Fondi. La kermesse si concentra tra febbraio e marzo e prevede quattro appuntamenti, nel corso dei quali si avvicenderanno diversi artisti che omaggeranno la scena musicale della tendenza del nuovo-folk e della musica popolare d'autore. Partita il giorno di San Valentino con la musica scoto-irlandese dei Folk Road, prosegue sabato 21 febbraio alle ore 21.30, con il recital solistico del nostro Lo Russo che, con le sue “ Variazioni colte ed extra colte per fisarmonica”, percorrerà in maniera trasversale i territori della musica, popolare e colta, in chiave acustica ed elettronica. Il concerto proporrà anche delle composizioni originali che prevedono incursioni nel linguaggio popolare con rivisitazioni tra standard della canzone italiana ed internazionale. La manifestazione proseguirà poi, sabato 28 quando si alterneranno, Gianni Perilli Trio e Arb Trio, e si concluderà sabato 7 marzo con il duo Marco Tomassi & Marco Iamele. Nel frattempo il maestro Marco Lo Russo è impegnato in alcune registrazioni per RAI World presto, infatti, andrà in onda una sua intervista, con esibizione in mondovisione, nel programma Rai Community condotto da Benedetta Rinaldi, per gli italiani all'estero. Nel corso della trasmissione sarà proiettato anche il video tratto dall’ultimo spettacolo Modern Accordion Dance di musica, danza e contaminazioni elettroniche, del maestro Lo Russo che, ha suscitato un notevole interesse sia a carattere Nazionale che Internazionale.   Video: Bobby Gardiner - Gradam Saol - TG4 Lifetime Achievement Award 2015 Promo.A concert titled "Gradam Ceoil TG4 – The Traditional Irish Music Awards 2015" takes place at Cork Opera House on Sunday February 22nd at 9.30pm. Gradam Ceoil TG4 returns to Cork after an absence of more than 10 years. The Traditional Irish Music Awards 2015 will be broadcast live for the very first time ever from Cork Opera House on Sunday, February 22nd 2015. Featuring the very best of Irish music and song, the night will also recognise the outstanding achievements of the 2015 recipients across six various strands of Irish Traditional Music. Dáithí Ó Sé and Aoife Ní Thuairisg will present the show and will be joined on stage by a host of well known personalities. The main award, Gradam Ceoil TG4 goes to Galway virtuoso Máirtín O’Connor whose accordion-playing wizardry and range of compositions have been dazzling audiences for over thirty years. The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to legendary player Bobby Gardiner (picture right), a Clare native now exiled in Tipperary but well-known throughout the land for well over a half-century for his warm and gentle style of playing and teaching. |

He has since pursued a very successful international career as an accordionist, with several recordings to his credit. |

 Teenager Brandon McPhee, 2014 Senior All Scotland Champion, headlines a show at the Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, Scotland, on Saturday February 28th, 7.30pm. Brandon leads his four piece band, and also will sing and play guitar on some C & W songs. Also appearing is the comedian Eddie Rose.Brandon McPhee, from Caithness in the north of Scotland, burst on the accordion scene in 2008 with his first CD, ‘A 'Starr' Is Born’. Brandon plays the Shand Morino 3-row British chromatic button accordion, and the CD title pays homage to the memory of the late Will Starr, one of Scotland’s button accordion legends and a great influence on Brandon. Brandon has since made two more CDs and two DVDs, and has won many competitions in Scotland. |

 Accordionist Vincent LHermet performs in a concert titled ‘Rameau, hier et aujourd'hui’ (‘Rameau, yesterday and today’) at the Paris Conservatoire on Wednesday March 4th at 7pm.The concert is a celebration of the life and music of Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the Baroque era. Vincent LHermet (born 1987) is one of the most accomplished French accordionists of his generation. He graduated from the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki, Finland, and was the first ever accordionist to be admitted to the Doctorate of Music Performance (PhD) at the Paris Conservatoire, Sorbonne University, Paris. He has won first prize in the Arrasate-Hiria International Competition in Spain (2006), and regularly performs as a soloist with orchestras, ensembles and chamber groups. He is currently teaching accordion at the Boulogne-Billancourt Conservatoire and the Higher Arts Education Centers of Lille and Paris/Boulogne-Billancourt.  Weird Al Yankovic (born 1959) is an American singer-songwriter, comedian, accordionist, parody artist, record producer, satirist, music video director, film producer, actor, and author. Yankovic is known for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture and often parody specific songs by contemporary musical acts. Since his first-aired comedy song in 1976, he has sold more than 12 million albums, recorded more than 150 parody and original songs. He is not related to the late polka accordionist Frank Yankovic, though they have performed together. Weird Al begins his ‘Mandatory World Tour’ in May, with a total of 88 concert dates in the USA, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, UK and Ireland.
