Mika
Väyrynen was born October 7th, 1967 in Helsinki, Finland.
He studied at the Tampere Conservatory, the Sibelius Academy in
Helsinki and the Gustave Charpentier Conservatory in Paris, France
(in the class of Prof. Max Bonnay.) He completed a Master's degree
in 1992 and went on to complete his doctoral degree in 1997.
Mika
Väyrynen has won a total of eight prizes in International
Competitions, including first prize in the Confédération
Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) Coupe Mondiale in Luzerne,
Switzerland in 1989.
Mr.
Väyrynen has also served as adjudicator in competitions
like the CIA Coupe Mondiale, Beijing Accordion Festival, Marseilles,
the Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International (ATG) -
Anthony Galla-Rini International Competition for Classical Accordion,
Klingenthal, Castelfidardo and others.
His
debut recital took place in Tampere, Finland 1985. Since then
he has given hundreds of recitals all over the world including
in Austria, Belgium, Ukraine, China, Croatia, Denmark, Finland,
France, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Poland,
Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and the USA. He has appeared in venues
such as the Salle Pleyel in Paris, Musashino Hall in Tokyo,
Phoenix Hall in Osaka, Kiew Philharmony, The Gnessin Academy
Hall in Moscow, De Ijsbreker in Amsterdam, Finlandia Hall, Sibelius
Academy, Tampere Hall and Sibelius Hall in Finland.
Mika has performed as a soloist with several orchestras including
the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (Okko Kamu - Conductor)
the Lahti Sinfonia (John Storgårds - Conductor) and the
Turku Philharmonic Orchestra (Tonu Kaljuste - Conductor.) He
often appears at world-famous music festivals including the
Kuhmo
Chamber Music, Naantali Music
Festival, Lahti International Organ Festival, The Sibelius Festival
in Loviisa, Tuusula-Lake Chamber Music, Korsholm Music Festival,
the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades and others. Mika has also
collaborated with important composers, whose works he has premiered
including Jouni
Kaipainen, Tuomas Kantelinen,
Kirmo
Lintinen, Olli Kortekangas,
Ilkka
Kuusisto, Matti Murto, Juhani Nuorvala, Bogdan Precz, Aulis
Sallinen and Leif
Segerstam. Mika is also
teaching accordion at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland.
To date,
Mika Väyrynen has recorded almost 20 CD's which include
over 120 compositions. He has recorded on world famous labels
such as Finlandia Records/Warner Classics, JVC Victor Japan,
ALBA, Naxos and CPO. In
2002 his CD with Japanese cellist Yoko Hasegawa became "Specially
Recommended " by the Classical Music Magazine "Record
Geijyutsu" in Japan. In June 2004 his recording of J. S.
Bach's Goldberg Variations was chosen as "CD of the Month"
by the Finnish Classical Music Magazine "Rondo Classica".
Since 1985 he has recorded regularly with the Finnish Broadcasting
Company (YLE).
Mika
Väyrynen's repertoire is exceptionally broad, including
contemporary accordion music, transcriptions from various periods,
new tango, concertos and chamber music and most recently performing
on Bandoneon.
Mika
Väyrynen performs on
both Bayan and Bandoneon.
His Jupiter Bayan is manufactured by the Jupiter Bayan Company,
in Moscow, Russia and his
'Astor' Bandoneon is manufactured by Victoria in Castelfidardo,
Italy.
