Seraphin "Leo"
Reis was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. Leo grew up in a musical family
where he studied violin with his father, followed by lessons from Joe
Raposa. He then studied accordion with Anthony Imbriglio and with the
legendary Frank Gaviani, master teacher at the New England Conservatory
of Music where he also studied music theory, harmony and composition.
At age 16, Leo was performing weekly shows as accordionist on WSAR's Radio Broadcast. Appearances included the hotel and club as well as the USO circuit. Leo earned the degree of Bachelor of Science at Bryant College, Rhode Island where he was the accordionist in the college orchestra. California beckoned in 1949 when he made the move to the West Coast. He was hired as an advanced teacher at the Music Center Studios of California and, in the same year was elected an officer in the Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International (ATG) Los Angeles chapter. He studied arranging with Ray Anthony's band arrangers at the Gillette School of Music in Hollywood and in 1951 he started Accordion Artists Studio, his first accordion school. Later he opened other accordion schools in both the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. |
