Contributed by Faithe Deffner, President of the American Accordionists' Association

The PR program which resulted from the Accordion Summit Meeting in Houston, Texas culminated with the very successful, year-long celebration of "1996 the Year of the Accordion". This program will be followed by a two-year project titled "Launch an Accordion Star".

An exhaustive search will be undertaken by the accordion community to find an accordionist with the razzle dazzle star quality suitable for popular promotion. Video tapes will be used to screen the entries and three finalists will perform at a major metropolitan concert hall, where they will be judged by musicians and celebrities on basis of their star quality and professionalism as entertainers. Contributed by Martin Frey

The Gurtweil Accordion Orchestra gave an end of year concert at the end of 1996, at the Gurtweiler Town Hall. The orchestra plays both entertainment and classical music under the conductor Roland Schaaf.

There was a good mood in the audience. Even when I arrived very late, I was welcomed from committee member Uli Ebner and given an ovation from the audience. In the first half of the concert the orchestra performed the highlight "Air and Hornpipe", from the Water Music by Handel and played himself into the hearts of the audience.

The second half was the presentation of Rock, Pop and Jazz music. From "Fantasy Suite in five parts" to the song "Back for Good" and the top ten piece "Lemon Tree", the audience was getting more enthusiastic. The audience was blown away by the song "Killing me Softly". Everyone is now looking forward to the next concert in Gurtweil by the Gurtweil Accordion Orchestra.

ACCORDIONS TOUTED IN NEW YORK MAGAZINE

Contributed by Faithe Deffner, President of the American Accordionists' Association

Journalist Katharina Sand hailed the accordion's ever growing popularity in her recent New York Magazine article: "Last year, Jay Leno (the popular night time TV talk show host) tried to make Linda Evangelista (the high-style fashion model) look uncool by having her play the accordion on the Tonight Show (a top-rated nightly TV broadcast). He may have been behind the curve.

Lately, the little-loved instrument has been popping up in surprising places. Lili Taylor is a professional accordion player. Sheryl Crow now straps one on in concert. 'She took it up easily because she played the piano,' says Crow's agent. 'She decided the accordion was much sexier as an instrument though.'
