 EDITORS NOTE

This week it's our second birthday! Accordions Worldwide officially opened on October 1st 1996. Since then, we have become the largest accordion internet site in the world. There have been many developments such as the concept of the Accordion Yellow Pages Database and development into an online database, this Weekly News in 7 languages, opening of offices around the world, including Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Australia, USA and the latest one in China

The future looks bright, with a mirror site of Accordions Worldwide in Italian online by the end of this year. This will add to Accordions Worldwide already available in English, German, French and Chinese. We look forward to further development and implementation of ideas and concepts.

 "Chinese Accordion" Opening - China

Wayne Knights, Li Cong, Harley JonesContributed by Li Cong

On August 28th the Chinese Accordions Worldwide internet site was opened, the first step being the publication of the Weekly News in the Chinese language. Since then the site has been growing steadily and this week another important first happened.

"Chinese Accordion" is the first regular internet news about local accordion events in China. The editor is Accordions Worldwide Chinese Manager Li Cong, President of the Shanghai Accordion Association which is one of the largest and most active in China. "Chinese Accordion" subjects include "Editor's note", general news, "music hall" of concert reviews, "interviews" with prominent Chinese accordion performers, teachers and administrators, and a "new internet sites" section, which lists new Chinese language accordion internet sites.

The first issue of "Chinese Accordion" is especially notable because virtually all of the famous Chinese accordionists, teachers and organisations have sent messages of congratulation and reaffirming what an important development this is for the accordion in China.

Professor Wu Shouzhi (Chairman of the Chinese Accordion Society) wrote "I deeply believe it is extremely important work that will widen our field of vision, to keep well-informed, improve Chinese accordion skills, communication as well as promote and develop the accordion in China. It is a great development. I represent all the Chinese accordion world, and by my personal name, express my respect and congratulations."

Accordions Worldwide Director Harley Jones in an email to Li Cong said "This event is a landmark in the development of the accordion, particularly communication of accordion knowledge within China and between China and the rest of the world. Accordionists worldwide in close cooperation can achieve wonderful progress utilising the internet, to promote education and popularise the instrument we all love." Li Cong replied that he hopes that "Chinese Accordion" and Accordions Worldwide can "serve the accordion world better and better".

 Dance music from Northeastern Brazil

CD CoverContributed by Alf Goodrich

A new CD "Camarao plays Forro" is due for release from today (October 2nd) by accordionist Camarao, who is regarded as the successor to the King of Baiao, Luiz Gonzaga. The CD is a mixture of well-known pieces and tunes by local composers Joao Pessoa, Paraiba and Petrucio. Tracks include Forro pro Quartinha, Dedilhando, Sabia and Baiao.

The music is a mixture of forro, baiao and xote, which are very popular in Brazil. The term "forro" means "for all", and was named after dances that were organised during the construction and administration of railways by the British, which were open to everybody. This recording will help Camarao reach an international audience so that they can share the immense pleasure of the fresh, honest music that his roaring bellows blow forth!

 "HISS" Hits Town - Germany

Contributed by Uli Ebner

The German cult band HISS (Stuttgart) are currently performing concerts in Germany including Wendlingen, Bobingen, Villingen-Schwenningen, Renningen, Heilbronn, Wangen, Nürtingen, Meidelstetten and Reichenbach.

The name of the group comes from accordionist Stefan Hiss who also sings in a way that is everything from heartbreaking to bloodcurdling. He was the accordionist in the band "Das Kreuzfidele Nesenbach Trio" and "Erich und Polk", the predecessor of HISS.

HISS stands for "Polka'n'Roll" or "Rocking Polka". In a rather unrestrained manner, the group mixes music from all over the world with German lyrics. A radio announcer recently commented (after becoming thoroughly puzzled when hearing the cult song "Negerpolka") that "the song brings forward the most horribly outrageous claims concerning xenophobia, and makes a laughing stock of now unfortunately almost established pub slogans."
