Myron Floren is recovering well, following his September 9th emergency
surgery for colon cancer. All tests indicate that the cancer was completely removed and that there should be no need for follow-up treatment.
Myron will remain hospitalised for several more days to receive
antibiotic treatment for a bacterial blood infection, after which he
will continue his recovery at home.
The effects of the small stroke he suffered while performing in Jamestown, New York on August 29th have almost entirely disappeared. However, that was what led doctors to discover the cancer in its early stages when complete removal was possible.
Myron's daughter Randee says, "Dad is looking forward to returning to
work within the next 2 to 3 months. His fingers are already itching to
get back to his accordion." He asks his friends to continue sending
cards and letters (but no flowers) to him, at the following address:
Myron Floren, c/o Randee Floren, 22728 Date Ave., Torrance, California
90505, USA.

A new series of the popular science program "Local Heroes" has just started on BBC 2 (UK). The October 5th edition has a segment devoted to Charles Wheatstone, inventor of the concertina and is mostly set in the computer games shop in Gloucester where he was born.
Chris Timson was asked to provide consultancy for the show and he also
provided the concertinas shown in the broadcast. Of particular interest is the symphonium, loaned by Colin Dipper. The symphonium is the direct predecessor of the concertina, and Chris believes there are no more than 20 left in the world.
