RINGE ACCORDION FESTIVAL - DENMARK

The Ringe 98 Accordion Festival, held from June 19th to 21st in Ringe was a great success. Over 800 musicians, fold dancers and 102 groups presented a wide repertoire of music including jazz, swing, pop, rock, classical and traditional to over 7,000 people.

PopularLang Linken band "Lang Linken" which comprises of Carl Erik Lundgaard (accordion), Keld Nørgaard (violin, danish bagpipe, keyboard) and Poul Lendal (violin) performed traditional Danish folkmusic in modernised arrangements. Group members perform on a number of old rare traditional instruments at many festivals around Europe, and are regarded as one of the most popular folk bands in Denmark.

Next year's festival "Ringe ´99" will take place from June 18th to 20th.


FRENCH CONTESTANTS FOUND FOR COUPE MONDIALE 1998

The 1998 Coupe Mondiale (Confédération International des Accordionistes - C.I.A.) will be held from October 21st to 25th in Nimegue, Holland. National French Qualifying Rounds organised by the Confédération Nationale Française de L'Accordéon (French Accordion Confederation) were held recently with the following candidates selected to represent France:

Junior Soloists

Magali Boissier, Marie Laure Deduffeleer and Claude Sauvage

Senior Soloists
Dominique Emorine and Carole Unal

Entertainment Category
Virtuosos

Frédéric Baldo, Franck Fieutelot, Mickaël Garret-Dalmais, Amaud Guimard, Nicolas Massoutie, Stéphanie Methot, Aurélien Noel and Marielle Roy.

The jury was composed of Marcel Azzola, Max Bonnay, Philippe Borecek, Frédéric Deschamps, Ivon Fraval and Lydie Kotala.

Three French associations will be representing the candidates - ACF (Accordéon-Club de France - French Accordion Club), APH (Association des Professeurs Hohner - Association of Hohner teachers) and UNAF (Union Nationale des Accordéonistes de France - French National Accordionists Union).


INTERNATIONAL ACCORDION COMPETITION - ITALY

The seventh "Stefano Bizzarri" International Accordion Competition will take place in Morro D'Oro, Teramo, from August 19th to 22nd. The event is organised by the "Stefano Bizzarri" Music Association in conjunction with local and regional councils. Roberto Fossemò will be the artistic director and Italian accordionist Gervaso Marcosignori will preside the jury. This prestigious competition includes substantial money prizes and has been won in the past by wellknown international accordionists. Competitors will be judged on their performance in Classical and Variety Accordion categories, divided by age group.


FIRST ACCORDION ORCHESTRA CONCERT IN FIJI

The Salzburger Accordion Orchestra Saalfeldon (Austria) were in Fiji as part of their "Round the World Concert Tour". This is a complete global navigation of the world by this popular accordion orchestra. They are performing concerts in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. They were featured by the newly formed Fiji Accordion Club when they organised the first ever accordion orchestra concert in Fiji at the Civic Centre in Nadi on July 4th.

The SAS also performed a second concert in Suva, which was attended by the Hon. Vincent Lobendahn, Minister of the Fiji Government for Labour and Industrial Relations.


ACCORDION PARTY WELCOMES FRENCH GUESTS - JAPAN

On Saturday August 8th an accordion party will be held at 6.30pm by the Tokyo Accordion Class to welcome French accordionist Max Bonnay and his wife at the "Fest" Restaurant, Shouhei-Bashi, Tokyo. This will be the first visit to Japan by these accordionists and an exciting program has been planned with a variety of accordionists performing. For further information phone: + 81 3 478-1707


CONCERTINA SUMMER SCHOOL - IRELAND

The 26th Willie Clancy Summer School for concertina players is currently being held (July 4th to 12th) in Clare, Ireland. Tutors include Gerry Commane, Francis Droney, Yvonne Griffin, Gerald Haugh, Kitty Hayes, Hugh Healy, Noel Hill, Tommy McCarthy, Seán McMahon, Mary McNamara, Brid Meaney, Aoife O'Connor and Pádraig Rynne.


SUMMER ACCORDION CAMP - CHINA

Forty students from the Chengdu Accordion School will participate in a four week summer accordion Camp from July 10th, sponsored by the Sichuan Accordion Association. The camp will be held at Emei Mountain (a famous scenic spot in the Sichuan province) with a variety of events including workshops, outdoor activities and games.

Accordion teachers Xu Wei, Li Yamei, Liu Liang and Wu Xie will be present at the camp and on the final day, a concert will be held in the Qingquan Hall, Qingquan, at the base of the mountain.


QUARTET PERFORMANCE IN ZURICH - SWITZERLAND

Willi Valotti On June 26th, Quartet members Willi Valotti (accordion), Bruno Syfrig (clarinet, soprano & tenor sax), Claudio Gmur (piano) and Ueli Moser (contrabass) performed at the Sternensee Restaurant in Samstagern, Zurich. The band played some very challenging music including a Vienna Music Medley, standard Swiss tunes like "Steiner Chilbi" and many of their own compositions. Their final encore was the French Musette piece "Sous le ciel de Paris" featuring Willi Valotti on accordion.


KIMBERLEY INTERNATIONAL OLD-TIME ACCORDION CHAMPIONSHIPS - CANADA

The 24th Annual Kimberley International Old-Time Accordion Championships began on July 5th and will finish on July 12th at the Civic Centre in Kimberley.

On July 6th and 7th Joe Morelli held one-hour accordion workshops and on July 8th Myron Floren performed a concert which included classical, pop, polka favourites and a Big Band Dance. This was the 7th year Myron has performed at the festival.

Other events include accordion jam sessions, family socials with plenty of dancing, and a trophy and bursary presentation.


ACCORDION COMPETITION IN TODTMOOS - GERMANY

More than 150 competitors took part in the "DHV Dreiländereck" Accordion Competition (German Harmonica Association, Dreiländereck), which was held on June 27th in Todtmoos in the Black Forest. The jury included 1980 Coupe Mondiale winner Werner Glutsch along with Paul Hey, Partik Jockers, Gaby Sester and Silvia Wenke.

Diplomas and trophies were presented by Josef Karle and Dietmar Fink (DHV) and Thomas Lüthy (President of the Todtmoos Accordion Orchestra).

ITALIAN MUSIC EVENING - USA

On June 29th accordionist Mario Tacca and Mary Mancini performed at an evening of Italian Music at the Harry Chapin Theatre, Eisenhower Park, Long Island, New York. This was the fifth time they have performed there to an audience of over 25,000 people. They were accompanied by a 12 piece orchestra with Mario performing his own arrangements including Rossini's William Tell Overture, "Italian Fantasia" (a medley of famous Italian melodies), "Granada" as well as classic Italian and opera pieces.

From July 17th to 19th the duo will be guest artists at the ATG Accordion Festival in Chicago, Illinois giving concerts and workshops, and afterwards perform at the Milwaukee Accordion Club on July 20th.


AUSTRALIAN ACCORDIONIST TO BE PRESENTED WITH FELLOWSHIP

On July 31st, Australian accordionist Bernadette Conlon will be presented with a Churchill Fellowship at Government House in Australia. She has also been asked to perform for the dignitaries at the presentation. The scholarship is for 4 months study at the Ukraine National Musical Academy, Kiev, Ukraine where Bernadette will receive tuition from some of Ukrainian's finest teachers. Bernadette believes that she is the first accordionist to receive this prestigious award, selected from over 1,000 applicants.


NEW ORLEANS BATTLE OF THE BANDS - USA

On July 9th, the New Orleans Battle of the Bands, each featuring an accordionist was held at the Radisson Hotel Ballroom, New Orleans. The bands were competing for the top prize of US$1000 awarded by the American Accordionists' Association. In addition the Lawrence Welk Group sent a talent scout to this event to consider the winning band for a live Lawrence Welk Show appearance at the Lawrence Welk Theatre in Branson, Missouri.

Competing bands included Deutsches Hofkapelle, Evening Edition, Julia Council and the Spumanti Singers, Mat Mathews and the Jazzers, New Orleans Klezmer All Stars, Norbert Slama Trio, Ray Rue's Heartbreak Hotel, accordionist Duane Dopsie Jr with Tony Delafose and Friends and Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots.

TOUR BY HOHNER ARTISTS

Frédéric Deschamps, Jérôme Richard & Vincent Peirani. From May 16th to 28th Hohner artists undertook a national tour, in order to promote a new range of instruments and the artists themselves. The musicians were Frédéric Deschamps, Jérôme Richard and Vincent Peirani.

They performed a mixture of concerts, demonstrations and Master Classes in towns in northern France and Brittany such as Lille, Arras, Amiens, Denain, Rouen, Brest, Rennes, Lorient and Dunkirk.

Their tour was well received by the many accordionists and accordion teachers who came to see them, with requests to return again in 1998.


SUMMER ACCORDION TRAINING CLASS - CHINA

From July 16th to 26th, a Summer Accordion Training Class will open in Jingxi Park, Chengdu with 24 students aged from 9 to 14 years old. Tutors Wu Shouzhi and Zhu Chunchen will prepare the students for future competitions, which will be held in September. While participating in the training class, students will practice for 5 to 6 hours daily and will live in Jingxi Park.


JEAN-LOUIS NOTON TOUR - BULGARIA

From July 1st to 7th Jean-Louis Noton performed concerts and MIDI Master Classes in Varna, Bulgaria, organised by Stanimir Ustinov. Following this he will be travelling to Estonia to perform concerts at the Tartu Cultural Centre, and a master class at Tartu University organised by the Tartu Music School, Kaido Otsing.
