ACCORDIONIST PERFORMS IN MOVIE "THE TITANIC" Contributed by Phil Parlapiano Phil Parlapiano performs in the hit movie "The Titanic" as a Greek accordionist that jams with an Irish band. The scene comes about an hour into the film, taking place in the third class cabin at a big party where the two main characters fall in love. ACCORDION ALBUM OUTSELLS SPICE GIRLS! - UK Scottish newspaper "Scottish Daily Record" published an article on December 19th regarding an album of fiddle and accordion tunes that has knocked the Spice Girls off the top of the charts in Orkney, UK and is nearly topping the Verve's hit album, Urban Hymns. The album, a 14-track debut CD by retired fireman Kenny Ritch, is a collection of traditional Scottish dance tunes including jigs, reels and a solo accordion tune called Dancing Fingers. Neil Stevenson (Grooves record store in Kirkwall) said: "I've sold hundreds of copies of Kenny's CD. "It's the biggest-selling one in the store and is top of our charts."

MICHIGAN ACCORDION SOCIETY HOSTS JEAN-LOUIS NOTON - USA Contributed by Linda Czerniak, Michigan Accordion Society The Michigan Accordion Society is honoured to host accordionist Jean-Louis Noton from January 18th to 24th. Noton will perform at a dinner and concert at Andiamo's Italia Banquet Center in Warren, Michigan on Sunday, January 18th. The next day he will travel to Chicago, Illinois to perform for 250 members of the Chicago Accordion Club. He will then return to Michigan, where he will perform at a number of schools in the Dearborn Heights, Michigan area.

UKRAINIAN QUARTET OF BAYANISTS ON TOUR TO ITALY Contributed by Prof. Vladimir Besfamilnov From December 27th to January 12th, the Ukrainian Quartet of Bayanists had a concert tour to Italy where they gave concerts in various cities such as Ardore, Pazzano, Candidoni, Bivona and others. Their program included music of Strauss and Rossini.

A.P.H. WINTER COURSE WITH FRÉDÉRIC DESCHAMPS - FRANCE Contributed by Frédéric Deschamps Every year for the last four years an accordion course reserved for the student elite of the A.P.H (Association des Professeurs Agrees Hohner) has been held at Mouthe, Haut-Doubs in France, better known as "Little Siberia". Last year the course was held from December 25th to 27th. 15 students including Marielle Roy, worked for six to eight hours a day, putting to good use the advice of Frédéric Deschamps. Some prepared new programs for national and international competitions to take place in the first term of 1998, while others prepared concert programs. Some students were also preparing to record their first CDs. There was a good atmosphere, with activities such as parlour games and singing (to develop the ear) taking place in the evenings and the last day was reserved for playing in the snow.

ACCORDIONIST TONY LAVELLI WAS A PROMINENT BASKETBALL STAR - USA Contributed by Faithe Deffner, President of Titano Accordions Tony Lavelli, an all-American basketball player at Yale University in the 40s and a forward with the Boston Celtics and the Knicks, gained fame for his hook shots and his halftime renditions on the accordion. He died at his home in Laconia, New Hampshire on January 8th, from a heart attack, at the age of 71. Lavelli specialised in long-range hook shots, and his height, (6 ft 3 ins), helped him achieve leading career scorer status in major college basketball in 1949 when he surpassed George Mikan's 1,870-point-record set for DePaul. He scored 1,964 points in four seasons at Yale, and led Yale to the championship of the Ivy League. He was an accomplished accordionist, having once made a guest appearance with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. He frequently entertained the fans at halftime when his teammates left the Boston Garden court to rest. When he came to New York to join the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, Lavelli studied at the Julliard School of Music. After that he toured for three years with the famous Harlem Globetrotters, always providing the fans with halftime music on his accordion. Many a basketball fan was introduced to the accordion through Lavelli's enjoyable performances. In later years Lavelli wrote many songs and was a prominent theatre and nightclub accordionist.

SCHLÜCHTALER AKKORDEON ORCHESTER CONCERT - GERMANY Contributed by Martin Frey The Schlüchtaler Akkordeonorchester is organising a concert with the White Day Ensemble from Moscow in late April. This ensemble has had many TV performances in Europe, including Germany, Denmark and Switzerland. The Schlüchtaler Akkordeonorchester often organises concerts with international accordionists, such as Friedrich Lips, Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra, Timbre Russian Accordions Sextett and the Pavel Smirnov Orchestra.

"WEIGER" CUP FAMILIES' MUSIC COMPETITION - CHINA Contributed by Wu Jie From January 10th to 18th the "Weiger" Cup Families' Music Competition held in "Ju-Hao" Hotel, Chengdu, China.
January 10th to 11th - Preliminary Contest Entries must comprise of at least two family members and it is estimated that there will be over 120 families participating including eight accordion families. Ms Li Lin and her husband, Mr Wu Gang (accordion teachers) will play a duet of Chinese folk music.

ACCORDIONIST NICK ARIONDO PREMIERS NEW CONCERTO - USA Contributed by Tatiana Lanchtchikova Accordionist/composer Nick Ariondo will be the featured guest artist with the Rohnert Park Chamber Orchestra (conducted by Nan Washburn ) when he will premiere a new accordion concerto by Janika Vandervelde titled "Cafes of Melbourne". MIKKO LUOMA TO PERFORM WITH JULLIARD CHAMBER ENSEMBLE - USA Submitted by The Classical Free-Reed, Inc The Julliard School of Music in New York City will feature Finnish accordionist Mikko Luoma, who will perform "Soira" by Veli-Matti Puumala on Tuesday, January 27th at 8pm. Contributed by Wu Jie Mr Liao Yuxuan, (accordion teacher in Yunan province), received an invitation from Russia last week to participate in the 98' International Accordion Competition held in St. Petersburg, Russia in April of this year. Mr Liao Yuxuan was an accordion student at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, tutored by Professor Wu Shouzhi and graduated from the Conservatory last year. This is the first time he has competed abroad and he will perform Chinese music including Speeding Train and Yellow River. "I know it is very difficult for me, but I will do my best to win." says Mr Liao Yuxuan.

Contributed by Kevin Friedrich Accordionist Mario Tacca will feature in a concert on March 21st, at 7:30pm at Saint Anthony's High School auditorium, 275 Wolf Hill Road, South Huntington, New York, USA. The concert is part of an Italian festival sponsored by Saint Anthony's High School. Mario will perform both solo and with his wife, international vocal artist, Mary Mancini. ACCORDION BAND PERFORMS IN CHINA Contributed by Wu Jie From 17th January at 8:00 pm, Mr Lin Yulin's accordion band will become the first in Guiyang, China to perform in bars, beerhouses and four-star hotels every Saturday and Sunday. The band comprises of eight members who play popular music such as jazz, rock and light music accompanied by Mr Lin Yulin's brother on electronic organ. "I feel happy because we have become the first to play the accordion in many public places, and I believe I can make more people aware that the accordion is a very interesting musical instrument" said Mr Lin Yulin.

NEW ZEALAND ACCORDIONISTS VISIT EUROPE Contributed by Heather Masefield Directors of the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra (Fay Schaw, Harley Jones and Heather Masefield) and their families, have just returned from Europe. In Vienna, they were hosted by the Vienesse Ensemble and Professor Walter Maurer. Whilst they were in Saalfelden they discussed plans with the Saalfelden Orchestra to tour to Australasia in July. Accordion Orchestra Conductors Gunther Stoll and Gunther Zeilinger from Germany both took time from their busy schedules to visit the group in Saalfelden. On the way home Harley Jones and Heather Masefield met the famous Chinese accordionist Fang Yuan in Singapore.

DANCEATHON FEATURES ACCORDIONISTS - USA Two accordionists will feature at a Danceathon on January 17th at Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center, 1317 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley, California, USA, - Danny Poullard, with the California Cajun Orchestra and Bruce Gordon with Zydeco Flames. The danceathon will begin at 1pm with 12 hours of nonstop dance music including African, Cajun & Zydeco, Balkan, Ska and Reggae, to raise funds towards the purchase of the Ashkenaz building.

MILVA SINGS ASTOR PIAZZOLLA IN VENICE - ITALY Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl January 7th was a memorable date for all fans of Argentinian tangos, and yet another testimony of the great popularity of Astor Piazzolla' music. At the PalaFenice in Venice Milva presented a repertoire including such pieces as "Oblivion", "Balada para un loco" (winner of the Buenos Aires music festival in 1969), "Years of Solitude" and "Adios Nonino", the famous piece written by Piazzolla to commemorate the death of his father. Milva was accompanied by the Orchestra of Padova and Veneto (conducted by David Searcy) and by great musicians such as Eugenia Marini (accordion), President of the Italian Accordionists' Association, Anahi Carfi (violin), Massimo Caroldi (flute) and Fabrizio Buffa (guitar).
