Editors note:
A good friend, Lionel Reekie arrived back to New Zealand, buzzing from the AAA and ATG Festivals he performed in, saying the standard of the performers and the atmosphere were amazing. There was excellent TV and newspaper publicity, further promoting our beloved instrument.

It seems as though the accordion is still climbing in popularity in China, where there are reported to be in excess of 30 million accordionists!

  • MIRCO PATARINI PARTICIPATES AT LUCIANO PAVAROTTI'S CONCERT - ITALY

    On Monday July 7th at the occasion of the "Dei Due Mondi" Festival in Spoleto (a little town famous for its beauty, near Assisi) an "extraordinary concert" was held and organised by the maestro Giancarlo Menotti. There, maestro Mirco Patarini and the festival's orchestra performed together with the very famous and international tenor Luciano Pavarotti. The concert was broadcast live on television.


    1998 TEXAS ACCORDION CONVENTION

    The 1998 Texas Accordion Association Convention is to be held in Plano, Texas on March 20th, 21st and 22nd. The convention will feature accordion legends Anthony Galla-Rini and Charles Nunzio.

    At the Friday night concert, "The Vaudeville Returns" will be performing and the Saturday night concert will feature accordion orchestras and selected artists. Other plans include a 50+ piece accordion orchestra along with many workshops.

    NATIONAL ACCORDION COMPETITION IN HUNGARY

    The 3rd National Accordion Competition was held from July 11th to 12th in Kecel, a city of Southern Hungary. The first competition took place in the 1950's in Budapest, with the second several years later being held in Kecel city, the venue this year. The competitors in each category had to play a variety concert program in two sections.

    The competition included 3 different categories:

    • Youth (under 18 years)
    • Amateur
    • Professional (players who have a degree in accordion education)


    A TELEVISION INTERVIEW - CHINA

    On July 24th at 10.00am, Professor Wu Shouzhi and four of his students (who all won prizes in American Accordionists' Association Festival) will be interviewed on Sichuan TV, in the show "Children's Garden". This was the first time that Chinese children have participated in accordion events in America and their performances were well received by the other accordionists and participants during the festival and competition. After the interview, Wu Shouzhi's students will perform live, some of the music they played in the competition.


    ACCORDION TOUR OF TEXAS

    Betty Jo Simon, polished accordion performer and graduate of the University of Missouri (tutor Professor Joan Sommers) is touring Texas from July 25th to August 4th.

    Betty Jo will be performing in McKinney, Dallas, Garland, Longview, West/Waco, Austin, San Antonia, New Ulm, Houston and Fort Worth.

    4TH INTERNATIONAL ACCORDION COMPETITION IN BOSNIA

    Professor Juergen Loechter, lecturer at the Academy of Music Cologne and diploma music teacher and lecturer at the Wuppertal University, presented Löchter's composition "Tango Affanato" for the first time at the gala concert "25 years Academy of Music Wuppertal". The audience accepted the performance with enthusiasm.

    The 4th international accordion competition will take place in Tuzla, Bosnia, on August 2nd. The organiser is the internationally well known accordionist Semir "Sammy" Hasic. The public TV will broadcast the entire program live.


    KIMBERLEY FESTIVAL WEEK - USA

    The Kimberley Festival first started in 1974 and this year drew 133 competitors from all over the United States and Canada.

    As well as competing, Toby Hanson and Raylene Campbell performed many well known accordion favourites and organised a short jam session of some younger accordionists. Frequently heard at the festival was a very popular piece in Canada and USA, titled "Snow Waltz".

    There were categories for different types of solo accordion pieces, bands and diatonics, which included button boxes, concertinas, and bandoneon. There were also concerts by well-known accordionists throughout the week including Frankie Yankovic, Joey Miskulin, Joe Schultz, and Myron Floren.


    INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL & SUMMER SCHOOL - YUGOSLAVIA

    After 10 days in the town of Kragujevac, Yugoslavia, the International Accordion Festival and Summer School concluded. There were 50 active members (students taking lessons) and 20 passive (teachers and lovers of accordion music listening to the lessons). Teachers were internationally known accordionists:

    • Teodoro Anzellotti (Germany)
    • J.Mornet (France)
    • Radomir Tomic(Yugoslavia)
    • Vojin Vasovic (Yugoslavia)
    • Vladimir Zubicky (Ukraine)

    There were 10 concerts performed throughout the festival by:

    • Klaudiuz Baran (Poland, Castelfidardo 96 winner)
    • Natali Bushoix (France, winner of the Klingenthal and CMA competitions 94, entertainment music)
    • Oivind Farmen (Norway, winner of the CIA 96)
    • Milan Mitrovic & Branko Djordjevic (junior winners in Klingenthal 96 and 97)
    • Janne Rattya (Finland, winner of the Arrasate competition in Spain)
    • Dmitrij Sokolov (Russia, Klingenthal 97 winner)
    • Vladimir Zubitsky


    ACCORDIONS FEATURE IN ADVERTISING - USA

    In the nationally circulated "USA Today" newspaper, an airline company recently placed a full page advertisement featuring a large picture of three female accordionists. Under the caption it read:

    Save up to 45% on Northwest Airlines! Now that's music to everybody's ears.


    ACCORDION ORCHESTRA HOF IN CONCERT - GERMANY

    The accordion orchestra Hof will give an open air concert at the Theresienstein, Hof, at 11 am on Sunday July 27th. This well known German orchestra presents its repertoire which includes everything from folkmusic to original compositions. An audience of over 700 is expected.


    ACCORDION FESTIVAL IN MEMORY OF GORNI KRAMER - ITALY

    This festival, which took place on July 18th was presented by the famous music critic Adriano Mazzoletti and included famous names such as Gianno Coscia, Peppino Principe, Mirko Fazzi, Simone Zanchini, Emanuele Rastelli and Renzo Ruggieri.

    Along with Carovana Hegra, Gorni Kramer made himself unique. He was an artist with the bellows. Even though he has always searched for simplicity, one of his compositions, "Divertimento Per La Fisarmonica", has now become one of the compulsory pieces in many competitions.


    EMTER FAMILY BUTTON ACCORDIONISTS - USA

    On July 18th and 19th, the Emter Family performed at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot, North Dakota, USA on their button accordions.

    Their next performance with be on August 5th and 6th at the Washakie County Fair, Worland, WY.

    On August 10th they will be performing at a picnic at the Former Governor's Mansion in Bismark, ND.

    4TH NATIONAL AWARD CITTA DI CAPISTRELLO - ITALY

    The Associazione Pro Loco Capistrello, Centro Didattico Musicale Italiano and the firm Armando Bugari of Castelfidardo, Italy, sponsored by the Comune of Capistrello, Regione Abruzzo, Comunita Valle di Roveto, Italy, have organised the 4th National Award Citta di Capistrello for Solo Accordion and Accordion Ensembles to be held on Saturday August 9th 1997.

    Chairman of the jury will be Professor Paolo Picchio, and the Artistic Directors will be Carmine De Marco and Professor Claudio Torres.

    The Guest of Honour will be the Orchestra Sinfonica di Avezzano conducted by Andrea di Mele. The program includes music by Carmine di Barco for Accordion and Orchestra and also pieces for Bandoneon and Orchestra by Astor Piazzolla. Other performers include Massimo Pitocco (bandoneon), Luca Fabrizi (accordion) and the Novitango Quartet.


    6TH INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL OF ACCORDION, PULA, ITALY

    The cultural association OKUD "Istra" in Pula is proposing the 6th edition of summer seminars for accordionists and orchestra conductors. The teachers participating in the event are as follows:

    • Alexander Skliarov (Russia)
    • Peter Soave (USA)
    • Slavko Magdic (Slovenia)
    • Denis Modrusan (Croatia)
    • Paolo Picchio (Italy)

    Peter Soave and Alexander Skliarov are amongst the most successful concert artists in the world and will deal with technical and performing skills of the participants. Slavko Magdic and Denis Modrusan are both accordion teachers and orchestra conductors and will lead orchestras, student-conductors and accordionists. Paolo Picchio will present a series of listening and music analysis meetings a chamber music project using music by Astor Piazzolla and some lessons looking deep into the functional theory of harmony.

    A series of concerts has also been organised and will take place during the course. Here, the guest concert artists, the "Mihovilic" orchestra of Pula will perform, along with the students who have attended the summer school.


    1997 KEYBOARD INSTRUMENTS CONCERT - CHINA

    On July 25th at 7.00pm a concert "97' Keyboard Instruments Concert" will be held at the Laborer Club of Bijie city in the Guizhou province, China

    There will be three sections: electronic organ, accordion and piano, with all the performers children who live in Bijie. More than 100 accordionists, 200 electronic organists and 100 pianists will participate.

    The concert will begin with 100 accordionists performing "Little Cavalrymen" in a massed orchestra. It is estimated that there will be more than 5,000 people in the audience, for this is the first concert of this type in Bijie.


    ACCORDION - ORGANOLOGY AND LITERATURE - ITALY

    The book "Accordion - Organology and Literature" by Professor Aleksi Jercog will soon be published. This is developed from the text by the famous Italian accordionist as his thesis at the Literature and Philosophy Faculty of the University of Triest.     NEW CD IS RELEASED

    Viatcheslav Semionov, Professor at the Russian Gnessin's Academy of Music and his wife Natalia who plays the domra have recorded a CD. This is a first one they have made together. The tracks include original works by Viatcheslav Semionov as well as arrangements by other composers.
