A Proud Night for Accordion at Carnegie Hall, New
York - USA
On
January 13th, Zankel Auditorium in Carnegie Hall was filled to capacity
for the renowned Polish group 'Motion Trio'. Performing their own
compositions and arrangements, their program was a diverse array
of cutting edge performances including the World Premiere of the
accordion version of Krzysztof Penderecki's 'Ciaccona' in Memory
of Pope John Paul II.
Having worked with the Motion Trio, Penderecki himself calls them
an exceptional accordion trio!
Utilizing every dimension of their instruments, the Motion Trio
comprising Janusz Wojtarowicz, Pawel Baranek and Marcin Galazyn,
brought the house down leaving the audience calling for several
encores. Each a skilled artist with superb technical and musical
ability, the three combined to capture and ignite the imagination
of the enthusiastic audience.
Formed in 1996, the Motion Trio has performed in 29 countries and
continues to explore the boundaries of their instrument while drawing
inspiration from all forms of music including contemporary, classical
and baroque, through to rock, metal and techno.
The
concert was held in the memory of the famous Polish composer Andrzej
Krzanowski (1951-1990), and his wife and son (pictured) were in
attendance at the concert. A renowned composer, Krzanowski was himself
a skilled accordionist who studied in Katowice with Joachim Pichura.
Among his hundreds of compositions for many instruments, Krzanowski
composed the Test Piece for the 1978 CIA Coupe Mondiale held in
Lodz, Poland.
A press conference for all journalists takes place on January 23rd
at 6pm in the Aktionsradius Wien, 1200 Wien, Gaußplatz 11, organised
by the new Akkordeon Festival, Vienna, which takes place from February
23rd until March 24th. This evening includes a buffet, with live music
by the group Flic-Flac.
One
of the true greats of French musette, Maurice Larcange passed away
in October at the age of 80. Maurice Larcange (1927-2007) was not
only one of France's best known and greatest accordionists but was
also was one the most influential figures in his country's present
day accordion scene.
Born in the northern town of Trith St Leger, Maurice Larcange's father
ran an accordion school in nearby Valenciennes. Maurice - known to
his friends as 'Momo' - began playing professionally in cafes and
bars in Brittany in the mid-1940s before being called up for National
Service in the army. Once de-mobbed, he moved to Paris where he was
helped by the already established accordionist Aimable, an old friend
of his father's. Larcange became a star name in Paris, and was a contemporary
of the likes of Yvette Horner, Joss Baselli, Marcel Azzola and Jo
Privat.
From the 1950s onwards Larcange became well known both nationally
and internationally through his many recordings, arrangements and
compositions, and his exuberant and joyful playing was much admired
and imitated. He was also a prolific composer, and is believed to
have written about 2,000 pieces, of which 'Pistonette' was the most
popular.
In 1987 Maurice Larcange founded his own accordion school, 'Les Petits
Prodiges de l'Accordeon', which proved overwhelmingly successful and
will doubtless prove to be his real legacy. Larcange's teaching involved
developing both musical skills and the art of stage presentation,
and helped to launch the playing careers of such present day accordionists
as Eric Bouvelle, Jerome Richard, Domi Emorine, Alexandra Paris, and
many others.
Despite his stage flamboyance and fame in a highly successful career
dating back to the late 1940s, Maurice Larcange remained essentially
a private person whose greatest happiness came from the progress and
achievements of his innumerable accordion students. He will indeed
be greatly missed.

On Wednesday January 9th Stockport Accordion Club, based in the North
West of England, began 2008 in fine style with Gordon Glenn making
a long awaited return to the concert stage as our Club Night guest
artiste.
Gordon's sophisticated skills certainly went down very well with the
audience, and his programme included 'Strauss Selection', 'Serenata',
'What A Difference A Day Made' (arr. Magnante), 'Yours' (arr. Charles
Magnante), 'Air on a G String', 'The Umbrella Man in Paris', 'La Mariposita',
'Tango in D', 'Don't Blame Me' (arr. Magnante), 'Concierto de Aranjuez',
'I Will Say Goodbye', and 'Dance of the Comedians'. Gordon also played
'Autumn Leaves' and 'Pennies From Heaven' in duet with concertina
maestro and Stockport AC Vice President John Nixon.
The concert also included supporting spots from Rob
Howard, John Jones, Betty Molloy and Chris Green, Ray Peacock,
Ann Parker, Johnny Coleclough and John Higham. Stockport AC President
Johnny Coleclough gave a world premiere performance of his new song,
which was a pastiche of Parisian sights and sounds, and made very
good entertainment. All it lacked was a title!
Gordon Glenn has been a leading professional accordionist since the
1950s, and has worked with many of the UK's best accordionists and
other musicians.
