Death of Joseph Zarnich, Pittsburgh - USA
Contributed by Rob
Howard
Known
to many as 'The Accordion Man', Joseph Zarnich died on August 25th
at the age of 90 from lung cancer. Zarnich was an accordion teacher
and repair technician, and was also a professional player, well known
in and around Pittsburgh. He performed solo and also with the Polish
Aristocrats
Orchestra.
Joseph
Zarnich's parents were from Yugoslavia, and introduced him to the
accordion at an early age. Although a highly skilled performer, Zarnich
received most satisfaction from teaching. He was known as a fine and
enthusiastic teacher, with a sense of humour. His daughter Christine
commented: "He taught kids of middle class, and people with low
incomes. If they couldn't afford to pay for what he called the beginner's
class, they might make him food or something. He just loved to see
people play."
