Contributed by Holda
Paoletti-Kampl
The
Sata Häme Soi Festival in Ikaalinen was held last week from
June 28th until July 3rd, and featured traditional Finnish accordion
music, classical music and high-quality international light entertainment
music. This international festival, featuring guests and artistes
from all around the world, is attracting thousands of visitors each
year. Special occasion for all guests and inhabitants of the city was, when the Finnish President Mrs. Tarja Halonen came to their city to participate and honour the closing ceremony. with her presence.
This year's edition was the 33rd, with 25,000 tickets sold. Plenty
of accordion events are scheduled during their long days of midsummer,
where the sunset is about 1 am in the morning. One can listen to
all and every kind of accordion music at almost every corner of
the city. A large variety of events took place in the Ikaalinen
Park, where open-air performances are took place as well as performances
in intimate concerts halls. Several competitions were organised,
including also folk music on diatonic accordions.
The light entertainment music National Accordion Championship competition,
the Golden Accordion Award (held since 1983), and the Silver Accordion
Award for children (since 1986) are major public highlights of the
Sata-Häme Soi Festival. And now, The Primus Ikaalinen Competition,
which was held for the first time this year, was a big success.

in this event were 8 chosen artistes from different countries: Alexander
Shirunov (Russia), Anne-Mari Kanniainen (Finland), Idoia Laburu
(Spain), Mickaël Vigneau (France), Jean Ribeiro (Portugal),
Paul Chamberlain
(Scotland), Nemanja Drazic, (Serbia), and Petra Stump-Hofer (Switzerland).

The international jury comprised: Richard Galliano (France) and
Chairman of the jury - Tiit Kalluste (Estonia), Pavel Fenjuk (Ukraine),
Kevin
Friedrich (USA), Mika
Väyrynen (Finland), and Klaus Järvinen (Finland).
Prize money for the awards: 1st prize 3,000 Euros, 2nd prize 2,000
Euros, 3rd prize 1,000 Euros, 4th prize 500 Euros, 5th prize 500
Euros. The winner of the first Primus Ikaalinen was the Spanish
artiste, Idoia Lauburo. All three competitions were broadcast live
on the 2nd national TV Channel, with large audiences during the
show and for sure also at home watching TV, as the accordion is
Finland's national folk instrument. From a population of about 5
million there are 5,000 well-established accordionists.
A
spectacular evening was held on Thursday, when Richard Galliano
and his septet 'Piazzolla Forever' transformed a packed Oma Tupa
Concert Hall into live-action with heartbreaking feelings and standing
ovations for perfectly executed tangos. Most of the Sata Hàme
Soi budget of about 450,000 Euros comes from the sales of tickets,
a quarter from the accordion cruise ship, which is organized for
3 days during the winter, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
from the City Hall of Ikaalinen, and sales of the trade stands during
the Festival.
All festival visitors will find excellent music and musicians, friendly
people, as well as wonderful landscapes with thousands of lakes
surrounded by endless shades of green. Please
visit the www.accordions.com/finland
website for full information of the festival, pictures of artistes
and information about Finland.

Biography of Guido and Pietro Deiro, Pennsylvania - USA
Contributed
by Rob
Howard
In
the first two decades of the twentieth century, the Italian-American
brothers, Guido (1886-1950) and Pietro (1888-1954) Deiro introduced
and popularised the piano accordion to millions of people throughout
North America by their many vaudeville performances, recordings and
published music.
Accordionist Henry Doktorski has written 'The Brothers Deiro and Their
Accordions', a book that describes in detail the fascinating lives
and enduring musical accomplishments of Guido and Pietro Deiro. This
landmark work is the first definitive and authoritative Fbiography
of the two pioneer piano-accordionists of the early twentieth-century.
In this
new work, the author investigates the lives, careers and music of
the Deiros, uncovering several facts and stories that give a unique
insight into these now legendary figures. The book also includes a
detailed description of the brothers' Guerrini accordions (now on
display at A World of Accordions Museum in Superior, Wisconsin) built
in 1917 and 1926, and includes twenty beautiful full-page photographs
of the two instruments.

New
Accordion Museum, Hønefoss - Norway
Contributed by Rob
Howard
The last accordion produced in Norway left the production line in
the small city of Hønefoss in the year 1960, twenty-four
years after its modest beginning in 1936. Although an estimate of
more than 100,000 people of a small population of 4.5 million can
play the instrument, it proved too hard to compete with cheaper
products from Italy, Germany and China.
In the wake of the Henschien Factory, many fine accordion stars,
some of whom became world famous, were educated at the factory's
accordion school that over the years educated 12,000 students! These
included Toralf Tollefsen, Frank Andersen, Sigmund Dehli, Steinar
Eriksen and the factory owner himself, Harald Henschien (he died
1968 only 66 years old). Mr.
Jan Heggelien has gathered close to one hundred old instruments,
contributed by accordionists from all over Scandinavia. About one
third of them originate from the factory in Hønefoss. Many
of the instruments are real collectors' items.
Mr. Heggelien is administrating the accordion museum that also contents
old pictures, films and other interesting memorabilia.
Jan Heggelien would like to make contact with other collectors world
wide - email: steinar@datasvar.no
