The Accordion Multi Media Conference, Montreal
Canada
Contributed by Rob
Howard
On
May 29th, from 1pm until 5pm, a conference for accordionists takes
place in St-Michel, Montreal. The organiser, Mario Bruneau (picture),
comments:- The main goal of this conference is to give the
accordionist the necessary tools to further his knowledge of the
accordion. The amateur will understand what type of accordion he
needs in order to better perform his preferred music style.
He will also be more informed and will understand the vocabulary
involved in expressing his preference regarding the sound he is
looking after. Even the amateur tuner-repairer will obtain some
good information. This conference covers the history, the construction,
the physics involved in the accordion, the tuning, the new technologies
and the performance.

International Accordion Festival, Blackpool
UK
Contributed by Rob
Howard
The
International Accordion Festival, held at the Norbreck Castle Hotel
in Blackpool, England, from May 13th to 16th, featured US jazz accordionist
Frank Marocco as the chief guest artiste. Frank Marocco, apart from
his appearance on the concert stage and very popular master classes,
also delighted festival goers with some informal and impromptu concerts
with accordionist Harry Hussey, concertina player John Nixon, and
drummer Billy Thom.
The festival also marked a return to the concert stage after a long
absence of Rosemary Wright, former Principal of the British College
of Accordionists, whose commanding performance of classical music
was very well received by the audience. Apart from her concert appearance,
Rosemary Wright was MD of the Intermediate Orchestra
workshop.
Also contributing significantly to the festival was Scottish dance
accordionist, David Bowen, whose new CD On the Spree
sold many copies. David Bowen, accompanied on stage by keyboard
player Dennis Morrison and drummer Billy Thom, also led a Scottish
music weekend orchestra workshop.
