International
Entertainment Competition, Michigan - USA

The
International Entertainment Competition for Accordionists, a spectacular
event, will take place from July 6th to 10th in Dearborn, Michigan,
under the auspices of the American
Accordionists' Association. The venue is the Hyatt Regency Hotel,
Dearborn,and the closing date for entries is May 31st.
Contestants are required to perform an own choice program of at least
four pieces, exemplifying different musical genres such as pop music,
musette, folk, Latin, Blues, Cajun and Zydeco (but classical music
is ineligible). There is a $10,000 First Prize.

Stanislav
Anguelov in Concert, Bloemfontein - South Africa

Bulgarian
born accordionist Stanislav Anguelov will perform the Concerto in
A, by Pietro Deiro. The performance will take place on April 29th
at Oliwenhuis in Bloemfontein. He will be accompanied by the Free
State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chris Dowdeswell.
Stanislav has lived in Cape Town for the past 13 years. He has performed
all over South Africa and Namibia. In February 2004, he performed
with a great success the Concerto 'Acocncagua, by Astor Piazzolla,
with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. In November 2003 he performed
at the 'Nelson Mandela 46664 Concert', where he appeared on stage
with the rock group 'Queen', and later in a song with Sir Bob Geldof.
He has recently returned from a very successful appearance with his
Cape Town Tango Ensemble at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival
at Oudtshoorn.

New Competition,
Madrid - Spain

The
International Musica Presente competition for interpreters of 20th
and 21st century music takes place in the Auditorium of Alcobendas,
Madrid province, from January 10th to 17th, 2006. Its aim is to encourage
musicians all over the world to be better acquainted with music of
the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as music by the new generation
of Spanish composers.
The competition consists of 3 rounds: elimination round (3 days), semi
final (2 days) and the final. Six finalists will be chosen for the final
round. The Director of the competition (who also acts as a member of
the jury) is the pianist Ananda Sukarlan (pictured), and the president
of the jury is the cellist Rohan de Saram.
Soloists and duetists
must be born after January 1st 1968. For ensembles, the average age
of the group members must not exceed 37 years. There are three categories:
melodic instruments (woodwinds, brass and strings), ensembles of maximum
6 members, guitar and keyboard instruments (piano, accordion and percussion).
Harpsichord, vocal, harp, ondes martenot and organ are excluded. For
all the instruments, it is necessary to play at least seven minutes
by Musica Presente composers.
The prizes
are:
Grand Prize : € 5.000 and concerts during the festival ENSEMS
of Valencia, The Miami Festival (Florida, USA), a concert in Monterrey
(Mexico) and a Dutch tour organized by the Gaudeamus Foundation of
Holland
Second prize: € 2.500
Third prize: € 1.500
Special prize for Musica Presente performance : € 2.000
For accordionists, there are available works for accordion and piano
by David del Puerto, Polo Vallejo, Fabian Panisello and Javier Arias
Bal to choose from. At the moment, Jesus Rueda and David del Puerto
are writing solo accordion works for Angel
Luis Castaño, to be finished in summer this year (2005).

Concerts of International Accordion Music,
Wroclaw - Poland

Three very successful concerts were recently
given by students and teachers of the Wroclaw School of Music. The
first concert, on April 15th, was a program of Tango, Waltz, Jazz
sounds and rhythms by the following composers: George Gershwin,
A. Rodriguez, F. Flai, and Kurt Weill.
The concert performers were teachers and students of the school
as well as the accordion orchestra 'Harmonica', conductor - Galyna
Kryval. On April 17th, the second concert was given by Olexiy Suslov.
The concert gave an opportunity to present a new CD featuring Hungarian
and Gypsy dances by J. Brahms, J. Strauss, P. Sarasate as well as
some popular melodies.
The third concert, on April 19th, was a performance of French music
by Olexiy Suslov, and held in the Café de France. The concerts
were frequented by such honorable guests as the President of Lower
Silesia, Mr. Wróblewski, who greatly appreciated the performance
of the participating artistes and even suggested organizing an international
contest of accordion music in Wroclaw.

Isle of Skye Accordion and Fiddle Festival, Scotland - UK

The
Isle of Skye Accordion and Fiddle Festival takes place from May
26th to 28th. Events include an Isle of Skye Accordion & Fiddle
Club Night on May 26th at the Well Plaid, Royal Hotel, Portree with
All Scotland Champion Tom Orr (pictured) plus local and visiting
players.
On May
27th there will be live music sessions in the Royal Hotel, Tongadale
Hotel and Bosville Hotel during the day from 3pm, and an evening
Ceilidh Dance, at 9pm, in the Skye Gathering Hall, Portree with
The Ballochmyle Ceilidh Band.
On the
morning of the May 28th, accordion and fiddle workshops will be
held in the Skye Gathering Hall for anyone who wishes to participate.
The tutor for accordion is Charlie MacLeod, and for fiddle is Cairena
Campbell. As the number of available places is limited, they will
be allocated on a first come first served basis. Players of all
standards, are welcome - from beginner to advanced.
The afternoon
of May 28th features the launch of 'Deoch & Doris' CD in the
Ceilidh Room, Hotel, Portree, in association with Skipinnish Records
- free entry. The
festival ends with an evening of entertainment in Well Plaid, Royal
Hotel, Portree, with Alasdair MacCuish & the Black Rose Ceilidh
Band.
